The UN General Assembly on Wednesday overwhelmingly adopted a resolution calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza, a symbolic gesture rejected by the United States and Israel.
The resolution -- adopted by a vote of 158-9, with 13 abstentions -- urges "an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire," and "the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages" -- wording similar to a text vetoed by Washington in the Security Council last month.
At that time, Washington used its veto power on the Council -- as it has before -- to protect its ally Israel, which has been at war with Hamas in the Gaza Strip since the Palestinian militant group's October 7, 2023 attack.
It has insisted on the idea of making a ceasefire conditional on the release of all hostages in Gaza, saying otherwise that Hamas has no incentive to free those in captivity.
Deputy US Ambassador Robert Wood repeated that position Wednesday, saying it would be "shameful and wrong" to adopt the text.

The General Assembly often finds itself taking up measures that cannot get through the Security Council, which has been largely paralyzed on hot-button issues such as Gaza and Ukraine due to internal politics, and this time is no different.
The resolution, which is non-binding, demands "immediate access" to widespread humanitarian aid for the citizens of Gaza, especially in the besieged north of the territory.
Dozens of representatives of UN member states addressed the Assembly before the vote to offer their support to the Palestinians.
"Gaza doesn't exist anymore. It is destroyed," said Slovenia's UN envoy Samuel Zbogar. "History is the harshest critic of inaction."
'Price of silence'
That criticism was echoed by Algeria's deputy UN ambassador Nacim Gaouaoui, who said: "The price of silence and failure in the face of the Palestinian tragedy is a very heavy price, and it will be heavier tomorrow."
Hamas's October 2023 attack on southern Israel resulted in the deaths of 1,208 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official figures. That count includes hostages who died or were killed while being held in Gaza.
Militants abducted 251 hostages, 96 of whom remain in Gaza, including 34 the Israeli military says are dead.
Israel's retaliatory offensive in Gaza has killed at least 44,805 people, a majority of them civilians, according to data from the Hamas-run health ministry that is considered reliable by the United Nations.
"Gaza today is the bleeding heart of Palestine," Palestinian UN Ambassador Riyad Mansour said last week during the first day of debate in the Assembly's special session on the issue.
"The images of our children burning in tents, with no food in their bellies and no hopes and no horizon for the future, and after having endured pain and loss for more than a year, should haunt the conscience of the world and prompt action to end this nightmare," he said, calling for an end to the "impunity."
After Wednesday's vote, he said "We will keep knocking on the doors of the Security Council and the General Assembly until we see an immediate and unconditional ceasefire put in place."
The Gaza resolution calls on UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to present "proposals on how the United Nations could help to advance accountability" by using existing mechanisms or creating new ones based on past experience.
The Assembly, for example, created an international mechanism to gather evidence of crimes committed in Syria starting from the outbreak of civil war in 2011.
A second resolution calling on Israel to respect the mandate of the UN agency supporting Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) and allow it to continue its operations was passed Wednesday by a vote of 159-9 with 11 abstentions.
Israel has voted to ban the organisation starting January 28, after accusing some UNRWA employees of taking part in Hamas's devastating attack.

Israel and Iran accused one another Sunday at the United Nations of being the main threat to peace in the Middle East, each calling on the Security Council to impose sanctions on their sworn enemy.
"The mask is off. Iran, the number one global sponsor of terror, has exposed its true face as the destabilizer of the region and the world," Israel's UN Ambassador Gilad Erdan told an emergency meeting of the Security Council convened after Tehran's unprecedented attack on Israel overnight.
"The mask comes off and the gloves must come on," he said, imploring the body to "take action."
Erdan asked the Security Council to designate the Revolutionary Guards, the Islamic Republic's ideological army, as a terrorist organization and to "impose all possible sanctions on Iran before it's too late."
In particular, he referred to the "snapback" mechanism that allows members of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal -- which the United States exited in 2018 -- to reimpose international sanctions against Tehran.
Addressing the emergency meeting, Iran's UN Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani insisted the Islamic republic was exercising its "inherent right to self-defense."
"The Security Council... failed in its duty to maintain international peace and security," Iravani said.
Therefore, Tehran "had no choice" but to respond, he said, adding that his country does "not seek escalation or war," but will respond to any "threat or aggression."
He also lashed out at Israel.
"It is time for the Security Council to shoulder its responsibility and address the real threat to international peace and security," Iravani said.
The body "must take urgent and punitive measures to compel this regime to stop a genocide against the people of Gaza."
Late Saturday, Iran launched a direct attack on its arch foe Israel for the first time, firing more than 300 missiles and drones.
Nearly all were intercepted by Israel and others, including the United States, Jordan and Britain.
Iran said its attack came in response to a deadly April 1 air strike on Tehran's consulate building in Syria's capital Damascus that was widely blamed on Israel.
That attack killed seven Iranian Revolutionary Guards, including two senior generals.
On Sunday United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres urged restraint, telling the emergency meeting that "neither the region nor the world can afford more war."
"Now is the time to defuse and de-escalate," he said.
Guterres also repeated his condemnation of Iran's strikes on Israel, and the attack on Iran's consulate in Damascus.
"It's time to step back from the brink," Guterres said.

Spokesperson for the Secretary-General Stephane Dujarric made these remarks on Thursday while he was responding to a question on the &ldquo;political unrest&rdquo; in India ahead of the upcoming national elections in the wake of the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and the freezing of the opposition Congress Party's bank accounts.
&ldquo;What we very much hope that in India, as in any country that is having elections, that everyone's rights are protected, including political and civil rights, and everyone is able to vote in an atmosphere that is free and fair,&rdquo; Dujarric said at the daily press briefing Thursday.
The response from the United Nations comes a day after the US also reacted to a similar question on Kejriwal&rsquo;s arrest and freezing of the Congress party&rsquo;s bank accounts.
On Wednesday, hours after India summoned a senior US diplomat to protest remarks on Kejriwal's arrest, Washington reiterated that it encourages fair, transparent, timely legal processes.
On the US diplomat being summoned in Delhi, US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller said &ldquo;I&rsquo;m not going to talk about any private diplomatic conversations. But of course what we have said publicly is what I just said from here, that we encourage fair, transparent, timely legal processes. We don&rsquo;t think anyone should object to that, and we&rsquo;ll make the same thing clear privately.&rdquo; Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) officials summoned Acting Deputy Chief of Mission Gloria Berbena to their office in South Block in the Indian capital. The meeting lasted for more than 30 minutes.
On Thursday, India said the US State Department's recent remarks on the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal are "unwarranted" and asserted the country is "proud of its independent and robust democratic institutions" and committed to protect them from any form of undue external influences.
Any "external imputation" on India's electoral and legal processes is "completely unacceptable", MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in New Delhi during his weekly press briefing.
In India, legal processes are driven "only by the rule of law", Jaiswal said on Thursday.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had said in a statement that India took strong objection to the remarks of the Spokesperson of the US State Department about certain legal proceedings in India.
&ldquo;India&rsquo;s legal processes are based on an independent judiciary which is committed to objective and timely outcomes. Casting aspersions on that is unwarranted,&rdquo; the MEA had said. &nbsp; The Enforcement Directorate has arrested Kejriwal in a money laundering case linked to the excise policy 'scam'.
The case pertains to alleged corruption and money laundering in formulating and executing the Delhi government's excise policy for 2021-22 which was later scrapped.&nbsp;

The World Meteorological Organization has issued a warning that cautions against rapidly rising temperatures this year.

The UN weather agency is sounding a &ldquo;red alert&rdquo; about global warming, citing record-smashing increases last year in greenhouse gases, land and water temperatures and melting of glaciers and sea ice, and warning that the world's efforts to reverse the trend have been inadequate.
The World Meteorological Organization said there is a &ldquo;high probability&rdquo; that 2024 will be another record-hot year.
The Geneva-based agency, in a &ldquo;State of the Global Climate&rdquo; report released Tuesday, ratcheted up concerns that a much-vaunted climate goal is increasingly in jeopardy: That the world can unite to limit planetary warming to no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) from pre-industrial levels.
&ldquo;As Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization, I am now sounding the red alert about the state of the climate,&rdquo; said Celeste Saulo.
The 12-month period from March 2023 to February 2024 pushed beyond that 1.5-degree limit, averaging 1.56 C (2.81 F) higher, according to the European Union's Copernicus Climate Service.
It said the calendar year 2023 was just below 1.5 C at 1.48 C (2.66 F), but a record hot start to this year pushed beyond that level for the 12-month average.
Omar Baddour, WMO's chief of climate monitoring, said the year after an El Ni&ntilde;o event &mdash; the cyclical warming of the Pacific Ocean that affects global weather patterns &mdash; normally tends to be warmer.
&ldquo;So we cannot say definitively about 2024 is going to be the warmest year. But what I would say: There is a high probability that 2024 will again break the record of 2023, but let&rsquo;s wait and see,&rdquo; he said.
The latest WMO findings are especially stark when compiled in a single report. In 2023, over 90% of ocean waters experienced heat wave conditions at least once. Glaciers monitored since 1950 lost the most ice on record. Antarctic sea ice retreated to its lowest level ever.
Saulo called the climate crisis &ldquo;the defining challenge that humanity faces&rdquo; and said it combines with a crisis of inequality, as seen in growing food insecurity and migration.
WMO said the impact of heatwaves, floods, droughts, wildfires and tropical cyclones, exacerbated by climate change, was felt in lives and livelihoods on every continent in 2023.
But the agency also acknowledged &ldquo;a glimmer of hope&rdquo; in trying to keep the Earth from running too high a fever. It said renewable energy generation capacity from wind, solar and waterpower rose nearly 50% from 2022 to a total of 510 gigawatts.
The report comes as climate experts and government ministers are to gather in the Danish capital, Copenhagen, on Thursday and Friday to press for greater climate action, including increased national commitments to fight global warming.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza is a "nightmare" for mothers and babies, with doctors reporting small and sickly newborns, stillbirths and women forced to undergo C-sections without adequate anesthesia, a UN official said Friday.
"I'm personally leaving Gaza this week terrified for the one million women and girls of Gaza... and most especially for the 180 women who are giving birth every single day," Dominic Allen, UN Population Fund (UNFPA) representative for the state of Palestine, said in a video news conference from Jerusalem.
"Doctors are reporting that they no longer see normal-sized babies," &nbsp;Allen said after visiting hospitals still providing maternity services in the north of Gaza, where need is especially great.
"What they do see though, tragically, is more stillborn births... and more neonatal deaths, caused in part by malnutrition, dehydration and complications."
The numbers of complicated deliveries are roughly twice what they were before the war with Israel began -- with mothers stressed, fearful, underfed and exhausted -- and caregivers often lacking necessary supplies.
"We have had reports of insufficient anesthetic being available" for Caesarean sections, "which again is unthinkable."
"Those mothers should be wrapping their arms around their children," he said. "Those children should not be wrapped in a body bag."
Israel has defended its policies as it pursues its stated goal of destroying Hamas, saying the UN should send more aid to the war-ravaged territory, pushing back on reports by the UN and NGOs that cumbersome Israeli inspections are blocking food and other essentials.
Allen said Israeli authorities had refused to allow in some UNFPA supply shipments, such as kits for midwives, or had removed supplies like flashlights and solar panels.
"It's a nightmare which is much more than a humanitarian crisis," he said. "It is a crisis of humanity... beyond catastrophic."
What he saw while driving through Gaza, he said, "really broke my heart."
Everyone he passed or spoke to, Allen said, "was gaunt, emaciated, hungry" and exhausted from the daily struggle to survive.
At one military checkpoint, he said, he saw a boy who appeared to be about five years old walking with his hands held high, clearly frightened, as his slightly older sister followed behind, holding a white flag.
The war began October 7 when a surprise attack by Hamas militants resulted in about 1,160 deaths in Israel, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of official figures.

The UN's preeminent body promoting equality for women and girls opened its annual meeting Monday with five male speakers in a row &ndash; a lineup that made some of the men uneasy and was somewhat baffling to the hundreds of women in the packed General Assembly chamber.
Achim Steiner, the head of the U.N. Development Program and the last of the male speakers, said when he stepped to the microphone: &ldquo;I am very conscious of the fact that I am yet another man standing at this podium addressing you.&rdquo; He said he had two choices: &ldquo;Don't speak or stand up&rdquo; and support gender equality.
Croatia's UN Ambassador Ivan &Scaron;imonovic, the third male speaker representing the U.N. Economic and Social Council, apologized for the absence of the council's president, a woman, who had a family emergency. So, he said, &ldquo;you are getting the male vice president, adding to the agenda disbalance of this opening.&rdquo; The first woman to speak was sixth in line, Chetna Gala Sinha, who represented civil society and was loudly cheered when she was called to the podium.
Sinha moved from Mumbai to a drought-prone village in India's Maharashtra state three decades ago and helped local women start a bank. Now, she said, &ldquo;our women want to go from microcredit to micro-enterprise&rdquo; so &ldquo;there has never been a better time to invest in women&rdquo; &mdash; a theme of this year's meeting of the U.N. After a speech by a young woman from Malawi representing youth, the commission's chair, Philippines U.N. Ambassador Antonio Lagdameo, invited the head of the U.N. agency promoting women's rights and gender equality to take a seat on the podium.
Sima Bahous, the executive director of UN Women, began by saying: &ldquo;It's great to be here. I feel the energy in the room is getting better as we see more women coming to the stage.&rdquo; The audience applauded loudly.
Almost every speaker &mdash; male and female &mdash; spoke of the plight of women and girls caught in conflict, especially in the Israeli-Hamas war in Gaza.
Lagdameo, the commission chair who opened the meeting, asked participants to express solidarity with all women and girls in conflict situations. &ldquo;Our thoughts are with you as we strive for peace,&rdquo; he said.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the second speaker, told the meeting that women and girls are suffering most &ldquo;from wars waged by men,&rdquo; singling out Gaza.
He noted Ramadan, the Muslim holy month that started Monday in Gaza, should be a time of compassion, but instead families are struggling to survive. He reiterated his call for a humanitarian cease-fire in Gaza and a silencing of guns in all conflicts including Sudan.
Last week Guterres said achieving legal gender equality could take 300 years, and on Monday he cited two worrying trends: Patriarchy is regaining ground as autocrats and populists attack women's freedoms and their sexual and reproductive rights, and the domination of digital technologies and artificial intelligence by men is leaving women's needs and rights ignored.
Bahous told the commission that a backlash against gender equality is rising &ldquo;with a ferocity and anger that is unfamiliar to many of us,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;Peace feels painfully distant, war painfully prevalent, suffering painfully ubiquitous.&rdquo; If spoken commitments to equality could be matched by funding in budgets, &ldquo;more than 100 million women and girls could be lifted out of poverty," she said. She added that closing gender gaps in employment could boost gross domestic product per capita by 20%.
The U.N. Development Program's Steiner told the commission: &ldquo;We have to face a harsh truth, gender inequality and the poverty experienced by so many women and girls are not inevitable outcomes of the crisis we face, but rather a consequence of systemic failures." Solving the problem of over 300 million women and girls living in extreme poverty can only be solved by making gender equality &ldquo;a core value&rdquo; at every stage of public financing, he said.

The International Organization for Migration said the biggest increase in deaths last year was on the treacherous Mediterranean Sea crossing, to 3,129 from 2,411 in 2022. However, that was well below the record 5,136 deaths recorded on the Mediterranean in 2016 as huge numbers of Syrians, Afghans and others fled conflicts toward Europe.
IOM said the total number of deaths among migrants in 2023 was nearly 20% more than the previous year.
It said most of the deaths last year, about 3,700, came from drowning.
The count also includes migrants who vanished &mdash; often while trying to cross by sea &mdash; and are presumed dead even if their bodies were not found.
The Geneva-based migration agency cautioned that the figures likely underestimate the real toll, and factors such as improved data collection methods play a part in its calculations.
"Every single one of them is a terrible human tragedy that reverberates through families and communities for years to come,&rdquo; IOM Deputy Director General Ugochi Daniels said in a statement.
Overall, the biggest jump in deaths in recent years was in Asia, where 2,138 migrants died last year, 68 more than in 2022. That was primarily because of increased deaths among Afghans fleeing to places like neighboring Iran and among Rohingya refugees on maritime routes, IOM spokesperson Jorge Galindo said in an email.
IOM said a record number of deaths also occurred in Africa last year &mdash; 1,866 &mdash; mostly in the Sahara Desert and along the sea route to the Canary Islands.
The agency cited difficulties in data collection in remote areas, such as in the dangerous Darien Gap between Colombia and Panama, where many migrants pass from South America on their way north.

UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly called for an expansion of the United Nations Security Council, backing India&rsquo;s bid for a permanent membership of the UN body, along with Brazil, Germany and Japan.
He emphasised that Africa deserves a louder voice on the world stage.
In his opening remarks at the Council on Foreign Relations on Tuesday, Cleverly said, &ldquo;I will summarize by saying that the challenges the world presents us are legion. But we do have the opportunity to make positive progress. We do have the opportunity to get the Sustainable Development Goals back on track.&rdquo;
&ldquo;It is going to mean that we work with our traditional friends and allies, but it also means that we have to give voice to the emerging powers in the world. The UK has encouraged an expansion of the United Nations Security Council for example, we believe that India, Brazil, Germany and Japan should have permanent membership, and Africa really deserves a louder voice on the world stage,&rdquo; he added.&nbsp;
Notably, reforms in the global systems have been an issue continuously raised by India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi at global fora. During his concluding address at the G20 Leaders Summit in Delhi, PM Modi reiterated his stance of making global systems in accordance with the &ldquo;realities of the present&rdquo; and took the example of the United Nations Security Council.
Further, in his address at the Council on Foreign Relations, Cleverly spoke about his visit to Beijing. He said he spoke with the Chinese government about areas where the two nations &ldquo;have deep, deep disagreements.&rdquo;
He spoke about China&rsquo;s treatment of the Uyghur Muslim minority in Xinjiang, their failure to abide by the commitment to freely enter Hong Kong and their &ldquo;aggressive posture&rdquo; across the Taiwan Strait.
Cleverly said he engaged with them on some of the issues, which included economic recovery, after the conference, and how to take benefit from artificial intelligence.

Several posters alleging harassment of minorities and women were put up at a square outside the UN building in Geneva coinciding with a session of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC).

Swiss ambassador to New Delhi Ralf Heckner conveyed to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) that he would convey India's concerns to Berne with all the seriousness it deserves, they said.
Several posters alleging harassment of minorities and women were put up at a square outside the UN building in Geneva coinciding with a session of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC).
"The embassy has conveyed India's concerns to Berne with all the seriousness it deserves," Heckner said in a brief statement.
A purported video of the posters in front of the UN building was also circulating on social media.
"The secretary (West), MEA, today called in the Swiss ambassador and raised the issue of unfounded and malicious anti-India posters in front of the UN building in Geneva," said a source.
"The Swiss Ambassador said that he would convey India's concerns to Berne with all the seriousness it deserves," it said.
The envoy said the posters in Geneva are part of the space provided to all, but in no way endorse the claims, nor reflect the position of the Swiss government, the sources added. &nbsp;It is learnt that similar posters were put up in the past as well during sessions of the UNHRC.

For the first time, United Nations members have agreed on a unified treaty to protect biodiversity in the high seas - nearly half the planet's surface - concluding two weeks of talks in New York.
The UN Convention on the Law of the Sea came into force in 1994, before marine biodiversity was a well-established concept.
An updated framework to protect marine life in the regions outside national boundary waters, known as the high seas, had been in discussions for more than 20 years, but previous efforts to reach an agreement had repeatedly stalled. The unified agreement treaty was reached late Saturday.
The treaty also establishes ground rules for conducting environmental impact assessments for commercial activities in the oceans.
&ldquo;It means all activities planned for the high seas need to be looked at, though not all will go through a full assessment,&rdquo; said Jessica Battle, an oceans governance expert at the Worldwide Fund for Nature.
Many marine species - including dolphins, whales, sea turtles and many fish - make long annual migrations, crossing national borders and the high seas. Efforts to protect them - and human communities that rely on fishing or tourism related to marine life - have previously been hampered by a confusing patchwork of laws.

On a sombre and alarming note, Alok Sharma, the President of last year&rsquo;s conference, began with a wake up call for world leaders, reminding everyone of the havoc that climate change has wrought in the past year.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres also did not mince his words.
This rhetoric is not new. In October, the UN had said that current plans submitted by governments would lead to a temperature rise of about 2.5 degrees celsius, condemning the world to a catastrophic climate breakdown.

At COP26 in Glasgow, countries agreed to limit global heating to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels, a threshold set out in the 2015 Paris climate agreement, which would avoid the worst ravages of climate change. Even a fraction of a degree more can lead to many more lives lost. China, the United States, Europe and India have all failed to reduce their emissions enough to meet their Paris Agreement goals.
The inequality that led to and is propagated by climate change was at the forefront of COP27. Poorer nations, which have historically contributed the least to climate change, but bear the brunt of its most devastating consequences today, are seeking more reparations from rich countries, many of which have grown their economies and amassed wealth by burning fossil fuels.
The Indian contingent at COP27 was led by Union Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav, who also campaigned for a new fund for addressing loss and damage. India has launched the LiFE - Lifestyle for Environment movement, which encourages people the world over to live a lifestyle that is in tune with our planet and does not harm it.

The objective of the attacks is to undermine the relationship between the Taliban and UN member-states in the region, the report said. ISIL-K is positioning itself as the "primary rival" to Taliban, and wants to portray Taliban as incapable of providing security in the region, UN chief Antonio Guterres warned.
In June last year, India resumed its diplomatic presence in Kabul by deploying a technical team in its embassy in the Afghan capital, over 10 months after it pulled out its officials from the mission following the Taliban's capture of power. The reopening of the embassy took place after an Indian team led by senior Ministry of External Affairs official J.P. Singh had visited Kabul and met acting Foreign Minister Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi and some other members of the Taliban dispensation.
The report of the Secretary-General further added that an attack in September last year on the Russian Embassy in Kabul was the first against a diplomatic presence in Afghanistan since the takeover by the Taliban. In December, ISIL-K claimed attacks against the Embassy of Pakistan and a hotel frequented by Chinese nationals.
&ldquo;Apart from high-profile attacks, ISIL-K conducted near-daily attacks targeting Shia minorities, which also served to undermine the Taliban&rsquo;s authority and challenge their nascent security agencies,&rdquo; the report said.
