Executive Director Roger Holloway said the eagle's upper beak was nearly split in half by the bullet. Its left wing was also injured, and the eagle suffered from lead poisoning.
The eagle, dubbed No. 24-390 because it was the 390th injured bird treated at the sanctuary this year, has undergone three surgeries. Holloway said an operation last week was to further repair the severely damaged beak &mdash; a serious injury that would be life-ending if it doesn't heal.
The good news: Suture sites from earlier surgeries are healing well and so are jaw fractures caused by the force of the bullet, Holloway said. Another surgery is likely in early September. Even if all goes well, eagle No. 24-390 will require months of care, perhaps even a year, before he could conceivably be released back into the wild.
&ldquo;We&rsquo;re just being cautiously optimistic that he&rsquo;s otherwise healthy and has gained weight, is processing food well and he&rsquo;s getting feistier and less cooperative, which we really like," Holloway said. &ldquo;Because the bird is wild and its got strength and that&rsquo;s what it needs to have the ability grow the beak back to its functional size and length.&rdquo;

On February 14, 2018, Cruz used an AR-15 assault rifle to kill 17 students and staff members at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland. &nbsp;
The condition of donating the brain was proposed by the attorney of one of the survivors of the shooting, Anthony Borges, 21. He was shot five times during the attack, the New York Post said. &nbsp;
"I figured if scientists studied his brain, they might be able to figure out what created this monster," Borges' lawyer told Fox News Digital.&nbsp;
The settlement also allows Borges to use Cruz&rsquo;s name in movies, books and other media. 25-year-old Cruz is currently serving a life sentence and is prohibited from profiting from his crime. &nbsp;

A 42-year-old Indian-origin man was shot and killed by police in San Antonio after he struck two officers with his vehicle as they were trying to apprehend him in connection with an aggravated assault case.
Sachin Sahoo was pronounced deceased at the scene after police officer Tyler Turner shot at him on April 21.
Sahoo originally hailed from Uttar Pradesh. Sources said he could have been a naturalised US citizen.
According to a preliminary investigation, just before 6:30 pm on April 21, officers were dispatched to a home in Cheviot Heights in San Antonio for a report about Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, the San Antonio Police Department said in a statement to PTI.
Upon arrival, officers found a 51-year-old female who had been intentionally struck by a vehicle.
The suspect, Sahoo, had fled the location. The victim was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. San Antonio Police Detectives issued a felony arrest warrant for Sahoo in that incident.
Several hours later, neighbours called the police to inform them that Sahoo had returned to the original location. Officers arrived and attempted to contact him when he struck two officers with his vehicle. One officer fired his weapon, striking Sahoo, who was &ldquo;pronounced deceased on scene.&rdquo; One officer was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries and the other officer was treated for his injuries on scene. Nobody else was injured during the incident. &nbsp;This investigation remains ongoing, police said.
Police Chief Bill McManus said that Sahoo had run over the woman, who was his roommate, with his vehicle. &nbsp;The woman was undergoing several surgeries and was in critical condition.
The police had issued an arrest warrant for Sahoo and a couple of officers had gone to his known location on April 21 to see if they could find him and arrest him. &ldquo;They did find him and he jumped in his car. He pulled out of his driveway&rdquo; where the police officers blocked him with their vehicles but he was able to squeeze through them. Sahoo hit the officers with his vehicle. &ldquo;The other officer that was with him fired to stop him and struck him,&rdquo; McManus said.
He said the police is yet to look at the bodycam footage to determine further facts.
A report in Kens5.com quoted Sahoo's ex-wife Leah Goldstein as saying that Sahoo was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
&ldquo;He suffered the past ten years with bipolar disorder," Goldstein said. "He also had symptoms of schizophrenia.&rdquo; &ldquo;He couldn&rsquo;t understand what was wrong with him," she said in the news report. "He would hear voices. And hallucinate and just hear voices and just get stuck in his own mind.&rdquo; Goldstein described Sahoo as a great dad.
&ldquo; I was a stay-at-home mom for many years," she said. "He provided for us.&rdquo;

The incident occurred at Parkland High School in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Police said the student, who is a minor, has been charged for misdemeanour assault on a government official and for communicating threats.
In the viral clip, the teen was seen wearing a grey hoodie and pants, standing right in front of the teacher, who was sitting on a chair in the classroom.
The teacher, however, did not react to the assault. &ldquo;Do you think that affected me anyway,&rdquo; the teacher calmly responded. &nbsp; &ldquo;Want me to hit you again?&rdquo; the student asked her. &nbsp;

The series of attacks on Indians and Indian origin persons/students had prompted the officials of the Indian Embassy in Washington and its consulates at various places to hold a virtual interaction with Indian students from across the US, discussing various aspects of student well-being and ways to stay connected with the larger diaspora.

A Texas law that would allow state police to arrest and deport migrants who cross illegally into the United States from Mexico was again placed on hold late Tuesday, the latest in an ongoing legal back-and-forth over its fate.
The administration of Democratic President Joe Biden has strongly opposed the law, known as Senate Bill 4, arguing that the federal government has authority over immigration matters, not individual states.
"SB 4 will not only make communities in Texas less safe, it will also burden law enforcement, and sow chaos and confusion at our southern border," White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement. "SB 4 is just another example of Republican officials politicizing the border while blocking real solutions."
A federal judge last month temporarily blocked the law passed by the Republican majority in the Texas state legislature saying it "conflicts with key provisions of federal immigration law."
But a conservative-dominated appeals court said SB 4 could go into force unless the Supreme Court ruled otherwise.

But by Tuesday evening, the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals put the law back on hold. That hold, however, could be soon again reversed -- allowing the law to go back into effect as arguments over it continue.

"We've come to work," said 42-year-old Oscar Galeano of Guatemala, hoping for compassion from US authorities and an opportunity to immigrate. "We didn't come to take anything from anyone."
Venezuelan Giancarlo Navarro, 43, described himself as "a political exile."
"I cannot return to my country," he said.
Republicans blame Biden for the recent record flow of migrants into the United States, while the White House accuses Republicans of deliberately sabotaging a bipartisan attempt to find a solution.

The US Supreme Court lifted its hold Tuesday on a controversial Texas law that would allow state police to arrest and deport migrants who cross illegally into the United States from Mexico.
The move by the conservative-majority court allows the law, known as Senate Bill 4 (SB 4), to take effect while legal challenges play out in lower courts.
The administration of Democratic President Joe Biden has strongly opposed SB 4, arguing that the federal government has authority over immigration matters, not individual states.
The White House swiftly denounced the high court's move.
"We fundamentally disagree with the Supreme Court's order allowing Texas' harmful and unconstitutional law to go into effect," White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement.
"SB 4 will not only make communities in Texas less safe, it will also burden law enforcement, and sow chaos and confusion at our southern border," Jean-Pierre said. "SB 4 is just another example of Republican officials politicising the border while blocking real solutions."
A federal judge last month temporarily blocked the law passed by the Republican majority in the Texas state legislature saying it "conflicts with key provisions of federal immigration law."
But a conservative-dominated appeals court said SB 4 could go into force unless the Supreme Court ruled otherwise.

The House on Wednesday passed a bill that would lead to a nationwide ban of the popular video app TikTok if its China-based owner doesn't sell, as lawmakers acted on concerns that the company's current ownership structure is a national security threat.
The bill, passed by a vote of 352-65, now goes to the Senate, where its prospects are unclear.
TikTok, which has more than 150 million American users, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Chinese technology firm ByteDance Ltd.
The lawmakers contend that ByteDance is beholden to the Chinese government, which could demand access to the data of TikTok's consumers in the US any time it wants. The worry stems from a set of Chinese national security laws that compel organisations to assist with intelligence gathering.
&ldquo;We have given TikTok a clear choice,&rdquo; said Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash. &ldquo;Separate from your parent company ByteDance, which is beholden to the CCP (the Chinese Communist Party), and remain operational in the United States, or side with the CCP and face the consequences. The choice is TikTok's.&rdquo; House passage of the bill is only the first step. The Senate would also need to pass the measure for it to become law, and lawmakers in that chamber indicated it would undergo a thorough review. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said he'll have to consult with relevant committee chairs to determine the bill's path.
President Joe Biden has said if Congress passes the measure, he will sign it.
The House vote is poised to open a new front in the long-running feud between lawmakers and the tech industry. Members of Congress have long been critical of tech platforms and their expansive influence, often clashing with executives over industry practices. But by targeting TikTok, lawmakers are singling out a platform popular with millions of people, many of whom skew younger, just months before an election.
Opposition to the bill was also bipartisan. Some Republicans said the US should warn consumers if there are data privacy and propaganda concerns, while some Democrats voiced concerns about the impact a ban would have on its millions of users in the US, many of which are entrepreneurs and business owners.
&ldquo;The answer to authoritarianism is not more authoritarianism,&rdquo; said Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Calif. &ldquo;The answer to CCP-style propaganda is not CCP-style oppression. Let us slow down before we blunder down this very steep and slippery slope.&rdquo; Ahead of the House vote, a top national security official in the Biden administration held a closed-door briefing Tuesday with lawmakers to discuss TikTok and the national security implications. Lawmakers are balancing those security concerns against a desire not to limit free speech online.
&ldquo;What we've tried to do here is be very thoughtful and deliberate about the need to force a divestiture of TikTok without granting any authority to the executive branch to regulate content or go after any American company,&rdquo; said Rep. Mike Gallagher, the bill's author, as he emerged from the briefing.
TikTok has long denied that it could be used as a tool of the Chinese government. The company has said it has never shared U.S. user data with Chinese authorities and won't do so if it is asked. To date, the US government also has not provided any evidence that shows TikTok shared such information with Chinese authorities. The platform has about 170 million users in the US.
The security briefing seemed to change few minds, instead solidifying the views of both sides.
&ldquo;We have a national security obligation to prevent America's most strategic adversary from being so involved in our lives,&rdquo; said Rep. Nick LaLota, R-N.Y.
But Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Calif., said no information has been shared with him that convinces him TikTok is a national security threat. &ldquo;My opinion, leaving that briefing, has not changed at all,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;This idea that we're going to ban, essentially, entrepreneurs, small business owners, the main way how young people actually communicate with each other is to me insane,&rdquo; Garcia said.
&ldquo;Not a single thing that we heard in today's classified briefing was unique to TikTok. It was things that happen on every single social media platform,&rdquo; said Rep. Sara Jacobs, D-Calif.
Republican leaders have moved quickly to bring up the bill after its introduction last week. A House committee approved the legislation unanimously, on a 50-vote, even after their offices were inundated with calls from TikTok users demanding they drop the effort. Some offices even shut off their phones because of the onslaught.
Lawmakers in both parties are anxious to confront China on a range of issues. The House formed a special committee to focus on China-related issues. And Schumer directed committee chairs to begin working with Republicans on a bipartisan China competition bill.
Senators are expressing an openness to the bill but suggested they don't want to rush ahead.
&ldquo;It is not for me a redeeming quality that you're moving very fast in technology because the history shows you make a lot of mistakes,&rdquo; said Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore.
In pushing ahead with the legislation, House Republicans are also creating rare daylight between themselves and former President Donald Trump as he seeks another term in the White House.
Trump has voiced opposition to the effort. He said Monday that he still believes TikTok poses a national security risk but is opposed to banning the hugely popular app because doing so would help its rival, Facebook, which he continues to lambast over his 2020 election loss.
As president, Trump attempted to ban TikTok through an executive order that called &ldquo;the spread in the United States of mobile applications developed and owned by companies in the People's Republic of China (China)&rdquo; a threat to &ldquo;the national security, foreign policy and economy of the United States.&rdquo; The courts, however, blocked the action after TikTok sued, arguing such actions would violate free speech and due process rights.

The US Army is planning to reduce its size by 5% to prepare for future wars

The US Army is slashing the size of its force by about 24,000, or almost 5 per cent, and restructuring to be better able to fight the next major war, as the service struggles with recruiting shortfalls that made it impossible to bring in enough soldiers to fill all the jobs.
The cuts will mainly be in already-empty posts &mdash; not actual soldiers &mdash; including in jobs related to counter-insurgency that swelled during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars but are not needed as much today. About 3,000 of the cuts would come from Army special operations forces.
At the same time, however, the plan will add about 7,500 troops in other critical missions, including air-defence and counter-drone units and five new task forces around the world with enhanced cyber, intelligence and long-range strike capabilities.
According to an Army document, the service is &ldquo;significantly overstructured&rdquo; and there aren't enough soldiers to fill existing units. The cuts, it said, are &ldquo;spaces&rdquo; not &ldquo;faces&rdquo; and the Army will not be asking soldiers to leave the force.
Instead, the decision reflects the reality that for years the Army hasn't been able to fill thousands of empty posts. While the Army as it's currently structured can have up to 494,000 soldiers, the total number of active-duty soldiers right now is about 445,000. Under the new plan, the goal is to bring in enough troops over the next five years to reach a level of 470,000.
The planned overhaul comes after two decades of war in Iraq and Afghanistan that forced the Army to quickly and dramatically expand in order to fill the brigades sent to the battlefront. That included a massive counter-insurgency mission to battle al-Qaida, the Taliban and the Islamic State group.
Over time the military's focus has shifted to great power competition from adversaries such as China and Russia, and threats from Iran and North Korea. And the war in Ukraine has shown the need for greater emphasis on air-defense systems and high-tech abilities both to use and counter airborne and sea-based drones.
Army leaders said they looked carefully across the board at all the service's job specialties in search of places to trim. And they examined the ongoing effort to modernize the Army, with new high-tech weapons, to determine where additional forces should be focused.
According to the plan, the Army will cut about 10,000 spaces for engineers and similar jobs that were tied to counter-insurgency missions. An additional 2,700 cuts will come from units that don't deploy often and can be trimmed, and 6,500 will come from various training and other posts.
There also will be about 10,000 posts cut from cavalry squadrons, Stryker brigade combat teams, infantry brigade combat teams and security force assistance brigades, which are used to train foreign forces.
The changes represent a significant shift for the Army to prepare for large-scale combat operations against more sophisticated enemies. But they also underscore the steep recruiting challenges that all of the military services are facing.
In the last fiscal year, which ended September 30, the Navy, Army and Air Force all failed to meet their recruitment goals, while the Marine Corps and the tiny Space Force met their targets. The Army brought in a bit more than 50,000 recruits, falling well short of the publicly stated &ldquo;stretch goal&rdquo; of 65,000.
The previous fiscal year, the Army also missed its enlistment goal by 15,000. That year the goal was 60,000.
In response, the service launched a sweeping overhaul of its recruiting last fall to focus more on young people who have spent time in college or are job hunting early in their careers. And it is forming a new professional force of recruiters, rather than relying on soldiers randomly assigned to the task.
In discussing the changes at the time, Army Secretary Christine Wormuth acknowledged that the service hasn't been recruiting well &ldquo;for many more years than one would think from just looking at the headlines in the last 18 months&rdquo;. The service, she said, hasn't met its annual goal for new enlistment contracts since 2014.

A 27-year-old Indian national, who worked as a journalist here, tragically lost his life in a fire incident in an apartment building in Manhattan.
Fazil Khan was killed in the fire that broke out in a six-story residential building at 2 St. Nicholas Place in Harlem, Manhattan that left about 17 other people injured.
The New York City Fire Department said that its marshals have determined that the &ldquo;devastating&rdquo; fire was caused by a lithium-ion battery.
Khan is a journalist with New York-based media company The Hechinger Report, which is focused on innovation and inequality in education.
The Consulate General of India in New York expressed condolences on Khan&rsquo;s death and said it is extending all possible assistance to repatriate his mortal remains to his family in India.
&ldquo;Saddened to learn about the death of 27-year old Indian national Fazil Khan in an unfortunate fire incident in Harlem, NY,&rdquo; the Consulate said in a post on X Saturday.
The Consulate said it is in touch with Khan&rsquo;s family and friends.
&ldquo;We continue to extend all possible assistance in repatriation of his mortal remains to India,&rdquo; the Consulate said.
Khan was a data reporter at The Hechinger Report and according to his profile on X, he was an alumnus of Columbia Journalism School.
The Hechinger Report said in a post on X that it learned Saturday that Khan died in a fire in the New York City building where he lived.
&ldquo;We are devastated by the loss of such a great colleague and wonderful person, and our hearts go out to his family. He will be dearly missed,&rdquo; it said.
Firefighters said the fire originated in the building&rsquo;s 3rd floor. At 2:14 pm Friday, the FDNY responded to the 2-alarm fire at 2 St. Nicholas Place in Harlem. Firefighters arrived within minutes to find people on the fire escape. People were also seen hanging out the windows on the fifth floor, the fire department said. Victims were trapped on the 5th floor of the building.
The fire department had said that there were a total of 18 patients, out of which four were in critical condition.
Joseph Pfeifer, the Fire Department's first deputy commissioner, had said Friday that one person was in critical condition at the scene but died at the hospital. At the time, the victim&rsquo;s identity had not been released.
The fire department said that fires caused by lithium-ion batteries have increased dramatically in New York City with deadly consequences.
These rechargeable batteries are found in electric bikes and scooters, cars, laptops, tablets, phones and common household devices. Lithium-ion battery fires have caused deaths, serious injuries and devastating damage to property around the city, the department said on its website.

US forces in the Red Sea have "successfully conducted five self-defense strikes" to foil attacks by land and sea from Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen, the Pentagon said Sunday.
The strikes occurred on 3 pm and 8 pm Sanaa time (1200 and 1700 GMT), the US military said, and are part of a series of actions taken by the United States and its allies against the Houthis, aimed at halting the Iran-backed rebels' repeated attacks on Red Sea shipping lanes.
The five strikes included targeting "the first observed Houthi employment of a UUV (unmanned underwater vessel) since attacks began" in October, according to a statement from the US Central Command.
Another of the five involved an unmanned surface vessel, or USV, essentially a floating drone. The use of such vessels has been comparatively rare.
The other three involved anti-ship cruise missiles, the statement said.
"CENTCOM identified the anti-ship cruise missiles, unmanned underwater vessel, and the unmanned surface vessel in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen and determined they presented an imminent threat to US Navy ships and merchant vessels in the region," it said, adding that it struck the five to "make international waters safer."
The Houthis, who control much of war-torn Yemen including the port of Hodeida, began their attacks in November, saying they were hitting Israel-linked vessels in support of Palestinians in Gaza, which has been ravaged by the Israel-Hamas war.
US and British forces have responded with strikes against the Houthis, who have since declared the two countries' interests to be legitimate targets as well.
The Red Sea attacks have raised insurance premiums for shipping companies, forcing many to avoid the Red Sea, a vital route that normally carries about 12 percent of global maritime trade.

An American judge who allegedly shot her ex-boyfriend in the head while he was sleeping &nbsp;has been charged with first-degree attempted murder and aggravated assault, the New York Post reported.&nbsp;
According to court documents, the incident happened on February 9 in Pennsylvania &nbsp;after the victim, Michael McCoy, tried to break up with Magisterial District Judge Sonya McKnight.&nbsp;
The police mentioned in their arrest affidavit that McCoy tried to end their one-year relationship and get the judge to move out of his hoouse several times.&nbsp;
On the night of the incident, McKnight had reportedly agreed to move out. The duo went to sleep around 11 pm. McCoy said that he woke by sometime later due to a 'massive head pain'. He couldn't see anything from his right eye.&nbsp;
The police said that McKnight then came to his room and asked 'Mike, what did you do to yourself?'.&nbsp;
The affidavit says a gun registered to the judge was found at the scene and the police found gunshot residue on her hands.&nbsp;

In yet another disturbing incident, a 41-year-old Indian-origin executive died in the US, days after he was assaulted during an altercation outside a restaurant in downtown Washington.
According to investigators, officers responded to the 1100 block of 15th Street Northwest outside Shoto Restaurant around 2 am for an assault on February 2. Once officers arrived, they found Vivek Taneja on the pavement. He was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
A preliminary investigation found that Taneja and an unknown man were involved in a verbal argument that turned physical, WUSA, a television station in Washington, DC, affiliated with CBS, said.
Taneja was knocked to the ground and hit his head on the pavement.
He died from his injuries at the hospital on Wednesday. Police are now investigating Taneja's death as a homicide.
Taneja was the cofounder and president of Dynamo Technologies. According to the company's website, Taneja "leads Dynamo&rsquo;s strategic, growth, and partnership initiatives, with an emphasis on the federal government contracting arena." Police continue to search for the man who threw the deadly punch. He was captured on surveillance camera.
The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) is seeking the public&rsquo;s assistance in identifying and locating a suspect involved in a homicide that occurred on the 1100 block of 15th Street, NW on February 2.
According to MPD documents, officers responded to the location for the report of an assault, where they located an adult male suffering from life-threatening injuries as a result from an assault. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
On February 7, the victim succumbed to his injuries.
MPD offers a reward to anyone who provides information which leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for each homicide in the District.
Earlier this week, Syed Mazahir Ali, an Indian student was attacked by robbers in Chicago. Earlier, 25-year-old Indian student Vivek Saini was fatally attacked in Georgia state&rsquo;s Lithonia city by a homeless drug addict.
Four other Indian-origin students were reported dead in the US this year.
