The United States has called on India and Bangladesh to resolve their ongoing differences peacefully. During a daily news briefing on Tuesday, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller urged both nations to find a peaceful resolution to their disputes.
"We want to see all parties resolve their disagreements peacefully," Miller said, responding to questions about the recent visit of India's Foreign Secretary, Vikram Misri, to Bangladesh.
Misri&rsquo;s visit earlier this week highlighted New Delhi's concerns regarding the safety and security of minorities in Bangladesh. Addressing the issue, Misri emphasized India's desire for a positive and constructive relationship with Bangladesh, while also raising concerns over the welfare of minorities, particularly Hindus, who have been increasingly targeted in recent incidents.
"I have underlined India's desire to work closely with the interim government of Bangladesh. At the same time, we also had the opportunity to discuss certain recent developments and issues, and I conveyed our concerns, including those related to the safety and welfare of minorities," Misri said at the end of his visit to Dhaka.
The strained ties between India and Bangladesh have worsened since former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation amidst widespread protests in August, which led to the formation of an interim government under caretaker leader Yunus. Hasina, who sought refuge in India, and Yunus have exchanged remarks over extradition, further escalating tensions.
The power vacuum following Hasina's departure has been marked by violence against Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh, including attacks on religious sites. The Indian government-run Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre in Dhaka was also targeted with arson. These incidents have prompted protests in several Indian states bordering Bangladesh, such as West Bengal and Tripura, where Hindu groups have raised concerns over the arrest of individuals charged with sedition.
In Tripura, tensions flared when the Bangladeshi consulate in Agartala was stormed by protesters, who vandalized property and desecrated the Bangladeshi flag. These developments have heightened diplomatic strains between the two countries, putting additional pressure on India-Bangladesh relations.
Misri emphasized that India values its relationship with Bangladesh as one rooted in people-to-people ties. "India-Bangladesh relations are people-centric and people-oriented, with the benefit of all people as its central motivational force," he said, underscoring New Delhi's commitment to working with Bangladesh to address issues of mutual concern.
As both governments face growing challenges, the U.S. has called for calm and cooperation between the neighbouring nations.

India on Thursday described a US State Department report citing alleged incidents of human rights violations including in Manipur as "deeply biased" and said it reflects a poor understanding of India and it attach no value to it.
The annual report of the State Department highlighted instances of human rights abuses in Manipur following the outbreak of ethnic conflict.
"This report is deeply biased and reflects a poor understanding of India," External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.
"We attach no value to it and urge you to do the same," he said at his weekly media briefing.
The report also mentioned the raids by Indian tax authorities on the office of British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).
The India section of the report said local human rights organisations, minority political parties and affected communities criticised the country's government for the delayed action to stop violence and provide humanitarian assistance in Manipur.
According to the report, there were a number of press and civil society reports of representatives of political parties using disinformation tactics against civil society organisations, religious minorities, such as Sikhs and Muslims, and the political opposition, sometimes depicting them as security threats.
Referring to the tax raids on BBC offices, the report said although tax authorities described the searches as motivated by irregularities in the BBC's tax payments and ownership structure, officials also searched and seized equipment from journalists who were not involved in the organisation's financial processes.
"The government invoked emergency powers to ban screening of the documentary, forced media companies to remove links to the video, and detained student protesters who organised viewing parties," the State Department alleged, referring to a BBC documentary on the 2002 Gujarat riots, the screening of which was banned in India.&nbsp;

&ldquo;The United States is not going to get into the middle of this, but we do encourage both India and Pakistan to avoid escalation and find a resolution through dialogue,&rdquo; the State Department spokesperson said.
To a question on why the US has not considered sanctions on India over the matter, Miller said, &ldquo;I am never going to preview any sanctions actions, which is not to say that there are any coming. But when you ask me to talk about sanctions, it's something that we don't discuss openly.&rdquo; Earlier this month, Singh, referring to New Delhi's assertive approach to dealing with cross-border terrorism, had said if terrorists try to disturb peace in India or carry out terror activities, a befitting response will be given, and if they run away to Pakistan, India will enter the neighbouring country to kill them.
The defence minister was responding to a question on a report by British newspaper 'The Guardian' that claimed Indian intelligence agencies carried out assassinations of terrorists in Pakistan as part of an emboldened approach to national security after 2019.
Modi had reportedly also made similar comments in the context of stern action against cross-border terrorism.

The United States in a new travel advisory on Tuesday urged its citizens to exercise "increased caution" while travelling to India and advised them to not to travel to Jammu and Kashmir and within 10 km of the India-Pakistan border.
“Exercise increased caution in India due to crime and terrorism,” the US State Department said in its latest travel advisory for India that decreases the risk of travel to India from Level 3 to Level 2. The last travel advisory issued by the United States was on January 25.
The State Department’s travel advisory comes a day after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Level 1 Travel Health Notice due to COVID-19, indicating a low level of COVID-19 in India.
Both the advisories are indicative of the fact that the US considers that the situation in India is now returning to normal.
However, its view on Jammu and Kashmir and the Indo-Pak border remains the same, where it is asking its citizens not to travel.
"Terrorist attacks and violent civil unrest are possible in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Avoid all travel to this union territory (with the exception of visits to the eastern Ladakh region and its capital, Leh),” the advisory said.
“Sporadic violence occurs particularly along the Line of Control (LOC) separating India and Pakistan, and in tourist destinations in the Kashmir Valley: Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam. The Indian government prohibits foreign tourists from visiting certain areas along the LOC,” the State Department said.
India and Pakistan maintain a strong military presence on both sides of the border, it said, adding that the only official India-Pakistan border crossing point for persons who are not citizens of India or Pakistan is in the state of Punjab between Atari, India, and Wagah, Pakistan.
“The border crossing is usually open, but confirm the current status of the border crossing prior to commencing travel. A Pakistani visa is required to enter Pakistan. Only US citizens residing in India may apply for a Pakistani visa in India. Otherwise apply for a Pakistani visa in your country of residence before travelling to India,” it said.
