Australia opener Usman Khawaja's appeal against the International Cricket Council's sanction for sporting a black armband during a game has been rejected, Sydney Morning Herald reported on Sunday.&nbsp; The 37-year-old was had worn a black armband during the first Test versus Pakistan in Perth and had cited personal bereavement reasons behind the gesture.&nbsp; The International Cricket Council had said that Khawaja did not take required permission from Cricket Australia or the ICC. His decision to wear the armband came after his previous move to don shoes with slogans supporting war-hit Palestine were disallowed by the ICC.&nbsp; As per the international organisation's rules, the sanction for a first offense is a reprimand.
ICC regulations prevent cricketers from displaying messages of political, religious or racial causes during international matches.
However, players can wear black armbands to mark deaths of former players, family members or other significant individuals after taking prior permission from the governing body.
After the reprimand Khawaja had said, 'I respect the ICC and all the regulations they have, I will be asking them and contesting them &hellip; From my point of view, that consistency hasn't been done yet. The shoes were for a different matter, I'm happy to say that, but the armband (reprimand) made no sense to me.'&nbsp;

The Aussie cricketer had requested the ICC to allow him to wear shoes with "all lives are equal" and "freedom is a human right" written on them as a show of solidarity for people suffering due to the Israel-Hamas conflict but the request was turned down by cricket's apex body.
Khawaja then wore a black armband during the first Test match against Pakistan in Perth as a mark of protest. As a result, ICC charged him with breaching its regulations.
'I cannot say I'm surprised by the ICC's stance. Once again, they show their hypocrisy and lack of moral standing as an organisation,' Holding told The Weekend Australian.

Australian opener Usman Khawaja has received a reprimand from the International Cricket Council (ICC) for sporting a black armband to show solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza during Australia's first test match against Pakistan. The ICC's rules prohibit players from exhibiting political, religious, or racial symbols or messages in international matches.
Khawaja, who was born in Pakistan and is the first Muslim to represent Australia in Test cricket, was found to have violated the ICC's clothing and equipment regulations, as confirmed by an ICC spokesperson to the Australian media.
The spokesperson explained, &ldquo;Usman displayed a personal message (armband) during the first test match against Pakistan without seeking the prior approval of Cricket Australia and the ICC to display it, as required in the regulations for personal messages.&rdquo; They added that this constituted a breach and the initial sanction is a reprimand.
This reprimand allows Khawaja to continue playing, albeit with a warning. If he repeats the action in the second test against Pakistan, which begins next Tuesday in Melbourne, he may face further penalties.
Khawaja, while practicing at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday, clarified that the armband signified a "personal bereavement." He plans to challenge the charge but will refrain from wearing the armband in the Melbourne test.
&ldquo;I respect what the ICC (says) and the rules and regulations they have,&rdquo; Khawaja stated. He also emphasized the need for fairness and consistency in the application of these regulations by the ICC.
Previously, the 37-year-old had worn shoes with slogans promoting human rights and equality during training before the first test in Perth. The slogans, written in the colors of the Palestinian flag, included "freedom is a human right" and "all lives are equal."
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese voiced his support for Khawaja, noting that the message of equality was not meant as a political statement. &ldquo;I think Usman Khawaja is a great Australian cricketer and that the position that he put forward is . . . pretty uncontroversial, one that 'all lives are equal' is a sentiment that I think is uncontroversial," Albanese remarked. "Usman Khawaja made his position clear, which is he didn't see it as a political statement.&rdquo;

Australian batsman Usman Khawaja expressed his disappointment over the International Cricket Council's (ICC) decision to penalize both Australia and England for slow over rates during the recently concluded Ashes 2023 series.
Taking to Twitter, Khawaja shared his frustration, stating, "Don't even get the chance to bowl in the second innings at Manchester due to 2 days of rain and ICC still issue fines and take 10 WTC points of us for slow over rates! That makes a lot of sense."
Both teams, Australia and England, faced penalties, with Australia losing 10 World Test Championship (WTC) points and England getting docked 19 points for the over-rate breaches across the five-match series.

As per the ICC's revised regulations, both teams were fined five percent of their match fees and one WTC point for every over short.
Throughout the WTC cycle 2023-25, teams are awarded 12 points for each Test victory and four points for a draw.
The ICC specified, "England fell two overs short in the first Test at Edgbaston, nine in the second Test at Lord's, three in the fourth Test at Old Trafford, and five in the last and final Test at The Oval." Consequently, England lost two points in the opening Test, nine in the second, three in the fourth, and five in the fifth match, totaling 19 points.
The updated sanctions regarding over-rate penalties were announced during the ICC annual conference in South Africa, with immediate implementation.
In addition to the points deduction, both England and Australia were also fined for their slow over-rate errors.
"Australia received a 50 percent fine of their match fee (five percent for each over short with a maximum of 50 percent) for 10 overs in Manchester (fourth Test)," the ICC stated.
"England has been fined 10 percent for the first Test, 45 percent for the second, 15 percent for the fourth, and 25 percent for the fifth of their match fee for slow-over rate offences in the first two and the last two Tests respectively," the ICC added.
Currently, Pakistan holds the top spot in the WTC points table following their 2-0 away win against Sri Lanka, securing 24 points, with India in second place with 16 points.

Opener Usman Khawaja raced away in delight and threw his bat high in the air after scoring his first Test century in England as Australia reached 311-5 on day two of the Ashes at Edgbaston on Saturday.
Australia's deficit was down to 82 runs after Khawaja revived Australia's fortunes with an unbeaten 126. Wicketkeeper Alex Carey gave strong support with 52 not out in a partnership worth 91 runs.
One more strong session from Khawaja and Carey on Sunday, when showers are expected, will give Australia a clear advantage for the first time in the match, while a quick wicket for England would expose a long tail.
The Australians will have enjoyed the day more than England. The visitors looked in trouble after the morning dismissals of top-ranked test batter Marnus Labuschagne for a golden duck and second-ranked Steve Smith for 16.
Khawaja's 15th test hundred helped to turn things round. He anchored the innings with style and occasional aggression, hitting 14 fours and two sixes.
Three wickets down in the morning, Australia dug in after lunch. Khawaja and Travis Head paired up for 81 runs.
Head plundered Moeen Ali in particular, though the England spinner had the last say by ending the dangerous partnership.
Khawaja and Head, the third-ranked test batter, sprayed the ball above, between and over England's fielders to give the hosts a taste of their own Bazball' medicine.
The pair came together at 67-3 and took Australia to 148, increasing the run rate by around a run an over mostly at Ali's expense, until Head, on 50, advanced once too often against the spinner to send the ball to Zak Crawley at midwicket.
Playing on his home ground, Ali finished the day with figures of 2-124 from 29 overs &mdash; including being hit for six five times, twice by Khawaja. But he went into the match knowing England captain Ben Stokes was happy to back a bowler always on the attack even if he's expensive.
After dismissing Head, Ali deserved allrounder Cameron Green's wicket two balls later but Jonny Bairstow spilled a clear stumping chance in what has otherwise been a superb test for the wicketkeeper-batter. Ali did eventually get Green for 38 with a delivery that spun back sharply.
Australia went to lunch on 78-3 after David Warner self-destructed and England seamer Stuart Broad dismissed Labuschagne off the next ball in more bowler-friendly conditions.
Stokes belied any lingering injury concerns and took 1-33 in seven overs. He trapped Smith leg before on lunch just when Australia seemed to be recovering. But Khawaja saved the day.

The first South Asian Muslim in Australian Cricket, Usman Khawaja has opened up about racism in Australian cricket. 

In a podcast show, Drop, the 36-year-old spoke about the racism that exists in the game in Australia.

The first South Asian Muslim in Australian Cricket, Usman Khawaja, who has been able to carve a niche in Test cricket for himself has opened up about racism in Australian cricket.&nbsp; While the Test opener who recently scored a 195 at SCG against South Africa did not outright accuse anyone, feels that the overwhelming whiteness of Australian cricket is the reason behind the racism. In a podcast show, Drop, the 36-year-old highlighted that the bias is subconscious and went on to add, 'if you have 2 cricketers one white, one brown, both the same, the white coach is going to pick the white cricketer just because he has a son who might look similar to him' Khawaja who made his Test debut in 2011, further blatantly said, 'There's been plenty of times, I should have been picked, but was not The Australian cricketer who has so far played 56 Tests, 40 ODIs and 9 T20Is is the only South Asian to play Tests for Australia.&nbsp;

Australian batter Usman Khawaja feels that the ODIs should be reduced to 40 overs in order to make the contest more interesting.

Australian batter Usman Khawaja believes that for ODI cricket to survive in the future, the 50-over games should be reduced to 40-over contests.
With the ODIs fast losing popularity due to the ever-increasing growth of T20 cricket, the 35-year-old feels this change would make the format more attractive for the stakeholders.
"50 overs is just that little bit too long now. Take out that little middle bit, you'd get to 25 overs and you'd look up and 'oh crap, there's only 15 overs left, let's go again'," Khawaja said in an interview.
Khawaja said that he enjoyed playing 40-over games previously when he took part in England Cricket Board's 40 league and this corrective measure could really help revive ODI cricket again.

As Australia touched down in Pakistan for a full-fledged tour for the first time in 24 years, it was a special homecoming for Usman Khawaja. 
Khawaja was born in Islamabad on December 18, 1986, before his family emigrated to Sydney, 4 and a half years later. 
Khawaja visited Islamabad during a four-week family visit in the early 1990s when he was 6 years old. He is now back in Pakistan with his Aussie teammates as the visitors hope for a memorable series.
