Prime Minister Narendra Modi will on Friday launch key development projects worth Rs 5,500 crore that aim to improve amenities for the 2025 Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj and bolster the city's infrastructure.
According to an official statement, the prime minister will arrive in Prayagraj around 12:15 pm. His visit will begin with a ceremonial pooja and darshan at the holy Sangam -- the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and the Saraswati rivers.
He will then perform pooja at the historic Akshay Vata Vriksh, followed by visits to the Hanuman mandir and the Saraswati Koop.
Modi will also tour the Maha Kumbh exhibition site.
He will launch projects such as road overbridges, ghats, riverfront roads, and sewage treatment systems to enhance connectivity and prevent untreated waste from entering the Ganga.
He will also inaugurate major temple corridors, including the Bharadwaj Ashram corridor, Shringverpur Dham corridor, Akshayvat corridor and the Hanuman Mandir corridor. These corridors will ensure smoother access to sacred sites for pilgrims and tourists.
To streamline communication for devotees attending the Maha Kumbh, Modi will launch the Kumbh Sah'AI'yak chatbot.
Additionally, he will launch several vital infrastructure projects related to drinking water and power supply in the region, further improving the city's basic amenities.
The prime minister will address a public meeting around 2 pm.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath held a meeting with local representatives on Thursday to ensure smooth arrangements for Modi's visit and the large crowd expected at the public meeting.

State-owned NLC India Ltd (NLCIL) on Thursday said its first supercritical thermal power plant in Uttar Pradesh has begun commercial operation.
The 1,980 MW Ghatampur Thermal Power Plant (GTPP) in Uttar Pradesh is developed by Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Ltd (NUPPL), a joint venture between NLC India Ltd and Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd.
"The first unit successfully completed its trial operation on December 7, 2024, and started commercial operations on December 12, 2024," the PSU said in a filing to BSE.
With the commercial operation of the first 660 MW unit of the power plant, the total installed power generation capacity of NLC India Ltd and its group companies has increased from 6,071 MW to 6,731 MW.
"The successful commissioning of the first supercritical power plant of NLCIL at Ghatampur marks a historic milestone in our journey towards energy sustainability....We remain steadfast in our resolve to operationalise the remaining units," NLCIL CMD Prasanna Kumar Motupalli said.

On a momentous Monday, an IndiGo aircraft, manned by a full crew and accompanied by experts from the Airports Authority of India (AAI), performed the pivotal trial, marking a crucial advance in the airport's development strategy.
The trial was not just a symbolic gesture but a thorough technical assessment, encompassing various aspects of aviation operations. The centerpiece of the exercise involved takeoff and landing maneuvers on the newly constructed runway. The importance of such validation flights&mdash;or proving flights&mdash;cannot be overstated. They are integral to the certification lattice, serving as a means to ensure compliance with stringent safety, operational, and regulatory standards.
During these flights, the airport's ability to handle real-world scenarios is put to the test, assessing whether its infrastructure, procedures, and systems align seamlessly with the guidelines laid down by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). These simulations play a critical role in ascertaining the preparedness for handling commercial flights and ensuring passenger safety and operational efficiency.
Following the meticulous collection of data during the exercise, the subsequent review by the DGCA will determine the way forward. Approved data will pave the way for the airport authorities to apply for an aerodrome license, an indispensable step before the airport can fully commence operations and serve as a lynchpin in India's aviation sector.
The validation phase is programmed to run between November 30 and December 15, reflecting a strategically planned schedule moving forward. This follows the airport's achievement in October when critical milestones were accomplished with the successful calibration of its Instrument Landing System (ILS) and Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) systems. These sophisticated systems are crucial for ensuring aircraft can land safely, especially under challenging conditions, underscoring the airport's commitment to safety and technological excellence.
As NIAL progresses, officials reported that the project&rsquo;s first phase has achieved 85% completion. The impressive 3.9 km runway is already operational, signaling readiness to accommodate various aircraft types. Meanwhile, the terminal building is fast approaching the final stages of construction. This structure is envisaged to offer an array of world-class amenities, promising a seamless experience for travelers and setting new benchmarks in airport infrastructure.

Days after Delhi schools received bomb threats via email, multiple schools in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur including two run by the government, received bomb threat emails.

Seven schools including two run by the government, received bomb threat emails which were found to be a &lsquo;hoax&rsquo;, officials said on Wednesday.
"Most schools reported the threat emails to police on Tuesday after it came to their knowledge, as the schools were closed on Sunday and Monday," Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Harish Chandra said.
Five private schools and two government schools have received bomb threats through an email in the last 72 hours, he said.
The schools that received the bomb threat include Gulmohar Vihar Public School in Hanumant Vihar, KDMA school in Gujaini, Sanatan Dharm Education Centre in Kaushalpuri, the Chintal&rsquo;s school in Singhpur Kachar, Virendra Swaroop School in Civil Lines Kendriya Vidyalaya Cantt and Kendriya Vidyalaya in Armapore estate.
The officer claimed that following a preliminary investigation it was found that the threats were a hoax.
"The Cyber Crime officials have been alerted and the instructions were issued to launch the investigation into the matter after registering the FIR," the ACP said.
"We are also trying to ascertain patterns between the hoax bomb threats received by schools in Lucknow, Bengaluru, Jaipur and Delhi-NCR," he said.
Similar "hoax" threats were received in schools of Lucknow, Bengaluru, Jaipur and Delhi-NCR earlier this month, said police.

Uttar Pradesh has overtaken Tamil Nadu in terms of monthly GST collections by recording a 19 per cent increase in tax revenues in April.
According to official data, the GST collections in Uttar Pradesh grew 19 per cent to Rs 12,290 crore in April 2024, becoming the fourth largest contributor after Maharashtra, Karnataka and Gujarat. Tamil Nadu, which saw a 6 per cent rise in GST mop-up to Rs 12,210 crore in the month slipped to fifth place.
Traditionally, GST collections in Tamil Nadu have been higher than that in Uttar Pradesh which is the largest state in terms of population. In April 2023, Tamil Nadu's GST collection was Rs 11,559 crore while Uttar Pradesh's was Rs 10,320 crore.
In March 2024, Tamil Nadu's collection was Rs 11,017 crore, compared to Rs 9,087 crore of Uttar Pradesh. In February too, Tamil Nadu's mop-up was higher at Rs 9,713 crore, against Rs 8,054 crore of Uttar Pradesh.
In December 2023, Tamil Nadu's GST revenue stood at Rs 9,888 crore against Rs 8,011 crore of UP.
In terms of total GST collection by states, Maharashtra was the largest contributor garnering revenue of Rs 37,671 crore. Maharashtra recorded a 13 per cent growth in April GST collection.
Karnataka is the second biggest contributor to GST revenues with collections of Rs 15,978 crore in April, a 9 per cent year-on-year growth.
Gujarat registered a 13 per cent Y-o-Y growth with revenues of Rs 13,301 crore in April.
The GST collections, which include central and state mop-up, breached the Rs 2 lakh crore milestone in a month for the first time since the rollout of the unified tax system.

In a video, which has gone viral on social media, young students at a primary school in Mahsaunapur village were seen enjoying the makeshift pool.
Principal of the school, Vaibhav Rajput said that heat had led to a decrease in the attendance of students in the school, due to which the school authorities took the decision. &nbsp;&nbsp; "Now children have started coming to school. They are both studying and enjoying the swimming pool in the classroom," he added. &nbsp;

However, Urvi&rsquo;s in-laws allegedly harassed her for dowry due to which she got a divorce on February 28.
A journalist shared the video of Urvi reaching her home amid celebrations. &ldquo;A courageous father like this too. The daughter was tortured by her in-laws. Despite many efforts, the torture did not stop. After this, the father brought back the daughter with the same pomp and show as he had sent her off with. A man allegedly kidnapped a 15-year-old girl from a village in Ballia district and took her to Himachal Pradesh where he raped her for almost three months, police said on Tuesday.&nbsp;
The police rescued the teenager on Monday and arrested the 26-year-old accused after he returned to Ballia with the girl, they said.&nbsp; The accused, who hails from Nepal's Parsa district and worked in Himachal Pradesh, had befriended the girl on social media, the police said.&nbsp; The minor went missing on January 29 and on the basis of her mother's complaint, a case was registered against unknown persons under Section 363 (kidnapping) of the Indian Penal Code, they said.&nbsp; Superintendent of Police (SP) Dev Ranjan Verma said the police rescued the girl from the accused on Monday.&nbsp; In the statement given to the police , the girl said Pritam Yadav, the accused, befriended her on social media and had come to her village to meet her.&nbsp;
Yadav later allegedly abducted the teenager and took her to Himachal Pradesh where he raped her for almost three months, the SP said citing the victim.&nbsp; Based on the minor's statement, Section 376 (2) (rape) of the Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act have been added to the case, he said.&nbsp; The SP added that the police arrested the accused from Ratsar town here on Monday.&nbsp;

Two professors of a state-run university in Uttar Pradesh have been suspended after an RTI response revealed that four students allegedly cleared exams with 56 per cent after writing 'Jai Shri Ram' and names of Indian team cricketers as part of several answers. Dr Vandana Singh, Vice-chancellor of Veer Bahadur Singh Purvanchal University, said the varsity's examination committee convened a meeting over the matter on Wednesday and found two teachers -- Dr Ashutosh Gupta and Dr Vinay Verma -- guilty of wrong evaluation. A decision has been taken to take disciplinary action relieving them of their duties and it will be presented before the Executive Council for a final decision, the VC said. An investigation into the allegation over the professors extorting money from the four first-year students is underway, she added. The matter come to light when Divyanshu Singh, a former student of the university, sought information under the Right to Information Act after coming to know about some students of first and second semester of the D Pharma course were passed in a test despite writing wrong answers. Singh said he had filed the RTI on August 3, 2023 and also demanded re-evaluation of the answer sheets of the particular students. On this, the university had set up an inquiry committee to probe the matter. A re-evaluation by two external examiners was conducted in which the four students scored zero.

A 24-year-old person was booked for posing as a pilot with Singapore Airlines in front of CISF personnel, who are in charge of airport security across the country.&nbsp; The person, who was caught for an act of forgery, was spotted wandering in the Metro Skywalk area of the Delhi airport in the uniform of a Singapore Airlines pilot, with a fake ID around his neck.&nbsp; Upon being intercepted and quizzed, the imposter was identified as Sangeet Singh from Gautam Buddha Nagar in Uttar Pradesh.&nbsp; He was found to be in possession of a Singapore Airlines ID for in-flight operations, which was subsequently confirmed to be fake upon checking.&nbsp;
According to the police, the 24-year-old forged the ID using an online app, Business Card Maker, and purchased the uniform and accessories from Pilot 18, Sector 9, Dwarka, in the national capital.&nbsp;
Further probe revealed that the imposter pursued and completed a one-year Aviation Hospitality course in Mumbai in 2020. However, he tricked his family and acquaintances into believing that he had landed a job as a pilot for Singapore Airlines, according to the probe.&nbsp;
A case under IPC sections 420, 468 and 471 was registered against the accused, who has been apprehended.&nbsp;

Additionally, Verma, who is also the district election officer, said the administration has encouraged residents' welfare authorities (RWAs) and apartment owners' association (AOAs) to participate in large numbers in the "festival of democracy".
"We will also hand out commendation certificates to RWAs and AOAs where the voter turnout shows improvement this time," he added.
