Munna Qureshi, a rat-hole miner was the first person to reach the tunnel workers. He along with Monu Kumar, Wakeel Khan, Feroz, Parsadi Lodhi and Vipin Rajput have turned out to be the heroes of the Uttarkashi rescue mission. They were the rat-hole miners who reached the trapped men and made the rescue mission a big success.
For those unaware, the rescue mission in Uttarakhand&rsquo;s Silkyara tunnel was taking place for 17 days and on Wednesday, all 41 workers were rescued.&nbsp;
Munna Qureshi, a 29-year-old miner employed by a trenchless engineering services company in Delhi, specializes in rat-hole mining&mdash;a technique involving the excavation of small pits to extract coal. Recently, he was among the group of miners called to Uttarakhand for a crucial rescue mission.&nbsp;
Their task was to clear the final 12 meters of debris left behind after the malfunction of a US-made auger machine in a tunnel.
Rat-hole miners became the last hope for the rescue operation as the auger machine broke down. It's worth noting that rat-hole mining was prohibited in 2014 due to its unscientific nature as a coal-extraction method.
On Tuesday evening, Munna Qureshi accomplished the challenging task of removing the last rock and saw the 41 workers who had been trapped. His efforts were met with expressions of gratitude as the rescued workers applauded him.

Drilling to create a vertical escape route for the 41 workers trapped inside the collapsed tunnel in Silkyara here for two weeks began on Sunday, an official said, a day after an auger machine carrying out horizontal drilling broke down.
"Vertical drilling has begun and (a stretch of) up to 15 metres has been drilled already," NHIDCL MD Mahmood Ahmed told reporters in Silkyara.
If it does not face any hurdle, it will take nearly 100 hours to reach the trapped workers from the top of the hill above the tunnel.
Officials had earlier said rescuers have to drill down 86 metres from above.
The vertical drilling began a day the auger machine's blades got stuck inside the rubble, hindering the multi-agency rescue effort that began on November 12 when a portion of the under-construction tunnel on Uttarakhand's Char Dham route collapsed following a landslide, trapping the 41 workers inside.
The removal of the shaft and fins of the auger machine stuck in the debris is underway with plasma and laser cutters inside the tunnel, state nodal officer for the rescue operations Neeraj Khairwal said.&nbsp;

Rescue workers are trying to insert a 1 metre-wide pipe through the debris so that the trapped labourers can crawl out.

Ambulances were on standby and doctors were summoned to the disaster site as a multi-agency effort to rescue 41 men trapped in the Silkyara tunnel appeared close to success on Wednesday evening.
At a press briefing around 4 pm, officials at Silkyara said another six-metre section of the rescue pipe had been inserted as an auger machine drilled through the debris of the collapsed stretch of the tunnel.
Going by the figures given earlier in the day, this indicated that 45 metre of the escape passage had been created &ndash; out of the estimated 57 metres stretch of debris beyond which the workers are trapped for more than 10 days.
In Delhi, a press release reporting the progress till 2 pm said the steel pipe had been inserted up to the 42-metre mark. It said 67 per cent of the auger drilling was completed.
Once the pipe, which is a little under a metre wide is inserted, workers can crawl out through it.
A team of 15 doctors, including chest specialist, has been deployed at the site in anticipation of the evacuation. Twelve ambulances were on standby at the spot, and the plan was to keep a fleet of 40 ready.
A helicopter was also expected to be earmarked for the operation.
A makeshift eight-bed hospital has been set up in the vicinity of the under-construction tunnel on the Char Dham route.
At the Silkyara briefing, Bhaskar Khulbe, a former advisor with the Prime Minister&rsquo;s Office, was upbeat, saying that another six-metre section of the rescue pipe had been inserted over the past hour.
"Hopefully the next two-three hours will be comfortable in terms of assembling for the next push and attaining what all of us are waiting for,&rdquo; he said, referring to the continuing process of pushing in steel pipe sections. He predicted "similar good news" at a press briefing later in the evening.
NHIDCL MD Mahmood Ahmed and Khulbe had told reporters earlier in the day that 39 metres had been drilled through the rubble to lay three 800-mm wide pipes. The stretch between 40 metres and 50 metres was the &ldquo;most crucial," they said.
On the alternative plan, Ahmed said about eight metres of horizontal drilling had been taken from the Barkot end of the tunnel &ndash; a much longer process that could take several days.
Ahmed had said at least three more steel pipes of six-metre length each need to be laid through the rubble to reach the trapped workers from the Silkyara end.
Drilling from the Silkyara-end through the rubble was put on hold Friday afternoon when the American-made auger machine encountered a hard obstacle, creating vibrations in the tunnel that caused safety concerns.
The drilling resumed late Tuesday.
Meanwhile, on Monday, rescue agencies also pushed in a six-inch pipe through the rubble for better communication with the workers, and sending them food. Earlier, this was done through an existing four-inch pipe.
A microphone and a speaker were sent through the new lifeline, apart from medicines, towels, shirts and underwear.
Asked to spell out a timeline for the evacuation, Khulbe had said earlier, "We hope to celebrate Bagwal with them", possibly meaning Igas, a festival celebrated in the Garhwal region after Diwali.
This year Igas will be celebrated on Thursday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami once again on Wednesday morning for updates on the rescue operation.
First visuals of the trapped workers were captured early Tuesday with the help of an endoscopic camera sent through the new pipeline.
In a statement, the government said the second lifeline was functioning efficiently, ensuring an ample supply of food items like rotis, sabzi, khichdi, daliya, oranges, and bananas in the tunnel.
It said a modified communication system with wire connectivity has been developed by rescue agencies NDRF and SDRF, and people inside reported in the morning that they are safe.&nbsp;

The 41 workers trapped in the Uttarakhand tunnel will be given a &ldquo;special diet&rdquo; of moong khichdi to help them survive the extreme conditions. India Today reported the food will be packed in plastic bottles and a 6-inch alternate pipe.
In a bid to maintain communication with the trapped workers, officials will send a phone and a charger along with the food.
Uttarakhand&rsquo;s government has announced that it will cover the food, accommodation and travel expenses of the victims&rsquo; families.&nbsp;
Psychiatrists have also been roped in to maintain the morale of the trapped workers, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said.
Rescue operations are being carried out on a war footing since portions of the tunnel collapsed following a landslide early on November 12, leaving 41 workers trapped behind a huge mound of debris.

Rescuers on Tuesday released the first video of the workers trapped inside the Silkyara tunnel here for 10 days.
The visuals were captured using an endoscopic camera sent in through the alternative 6-inch food pipeline.
In the video, the workers, wearing yellow and white helmets, are seen receiving food items sent to them through the pipeline and talking to each other.
This comes as a big relief to the families of these workers.
National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) Director Anshu Manish Khalkho had earlier said that cameras would be inserted through the pipeline to see how the workers were doing.
The camera was sent in after it came from Delhi late on Monday evening.

The Times of India, quoting experts, reports that escape routes are crucial in long tunnel projects for emergency rescue, and the lack thereof exposes workers to a contaminated environment as gases generated underground are not properly channelled out.
Specialists have also criticised the failure to adhere to safety measures and design principles in constructing the tunnel which is being built in a fragile zone of the Himalayan range, TOI said quoting senior geologists.
