The Vyapar Mandal in Katra, Jammu and Kashmir, is set to stage a protest on Wednesday against the approval of the Rs 250-crore ropeway project for the Vaishno Devi temple.
The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board has greenlit the installation of a ropeway designed to ease access for senior citizens, children, and others unable to trek the 13-km route to the temple. The ropeway will begin at Tarakot Marg and end at Sanjichat, allowing pilgrims to cover the journey in just six to seven minutes.
However, the Vyapar Mandal has raised concerns that the ropeway&rsquo;s construction will bypass key religious stops, such as Banganga, Charan Paduka, and Adhkuwari, potentially disrupting business for local shopkeepers along the traditional path to the temple. Additionally, operators of ponies and palkis (palanquins) have voiced objections to the project, prompting plans for a protest.
This isn&rsquo;t the first demonstration by the local community. In November, shopkeepers protested for four days against the project, during which tensions flared and stones were thrown at police. The then-District Magistrate, Vishesh Pal Mahajan, visited the area and assured the protesters that their concerns would be addressed by December 15. However, Mahajan's transfer soon followed, and shopkeepers suspect that his decision to delay the ropeway project was a factor in his reassignment.
In response to the ongoing controversy, shops in Katra will remain closed on Wednesday as part of the protest, with local residents backing the strike. Additionally, all political parties in the region, except the BJP, have come together to support the action.

Such bombs are usually stuck on the underside of vehicles. They were widely used by Taliban fighters in Afghanistan. Subsequently, sticky bombs were also adopted by ISIS-Khorasan against Taliban in the war-torn country.
The latest development comes amid the Indian Army's warning that weapons from Afghanistan were trickling into Kashmir. India has been fearing Taliban's interference in Kashmir ever since the extremist organisation snatched power in Afghanistan in 2021.
Meanwhile, a little-known terror group called the Jammu Kashmir Freedom Fighters, has claimed responsibility for the attack. However, authorities are yet to officially reveal findings of the investigation.

A high-powered probe committee set up by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha visited the site and appealed to the general public to share videos, statements or any other evidence about the incident.
Sinha chaired the first meeting of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board after the stampede and several decisions were taken to ensure the safety of devotees, including provision for 100 percent online registration.
More than 27,000 pilgrims had visited the cave shrine on Saturday, while over 15,000 visited on Sunday till 6 PM, according to officials.
The yatra registered a footfall of over 55.77 lakh in 2021, compared to 17 lakh the previous year due to the coronavirus pandemic. 
Twelve people lost their lives and 16 others were injured in the stampede in the early hours of Saturday after a scuffle between two groups of pilgrims during the New Year rush.
Many eyewitnesses said that there was overcrowding as people were staying back on the shrine premises after darshan instead of returning to the base camp at Katra.
It was the first such tragedy at the revered shrine, located atop the Trikuta hills in Reasi district, where pilgrims reach after a 13-km trek.

Devotees of the&nbsp;Vaishno Devi Shrine in&nbsp;Jammu and Kashmir will soon be able to attend the Darshan&nbsp;live, from the comfort of their home.
A new mobile app is set to be launched on October 17, the first day of Navratri&nbsp;and&nbsp;will also have a feature for people to conduct a live hawan.
These new measures are for devotees, who are unable to undertake the 12-km trek to the hilltop shrine. The app will also facilitate home delivery of the pooja prasad.
The aarti&nbsp;at Vaishno&nbsp;Devi is currently live-streamed on a religious TV channel, as per the CEO of the Board, but he says the app will offer greater flexibility.
