Hindus have been allowed to pray inside a sealed basement of the Gyanvapi mosque by a Varanasi court

The Varanasi district court on Wednesday granted the family of a late priest the right to worship Hindu deities in the Gyanvapi mosque cellar, Hindu side counsel Madan Mohan Yadav said.
The order was passed by judge A K Vishvesh who directed the district magistrate to make arrangements within seven days to facilitate puja there, Yadav said, adding the prayers will be facilitated by the Kashi Vishwanath Trust.
According to the petition, priest Somnath Vyas used to perform prayers there till 1993 when the cellar was closed by the authorities.
Shailendra Kumar Pathak, maternal grandson of Somnath Vyas, had sought the right to worship the deities there.
He said the barricades before the Nandi statue in front of the 'wazu khana' -- where where ablutions are performed before offering namaz -- in the mosque complex will be removed to make way for the petitioner to perform puja.
The Hindu side counsel said the puja of deities there was stopped during the rule of chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav.
The Muslim side has argued that the cellar is part of the mosque complex, and hence permission to perform puja there should not be granted.
The Varanasi district court had on July 21 last year directed the ASI to conduct a "detailed scientific survey" -- including excavations, wherever necessary -- to determine if the mosque located next to the Kashi Vishwanath temple was built on the remains of a temple.
According to the Hindu side, the report of the scientific survey suggests the mosque was built on the remains of a pre-existing temple.

The decision in this regard was taken at a meeting of the trust, he said.

Speaking to PTI on Thursday, Shambhu Sahni, secretary of Maa Ganga Nishad Raj Seva Trust, said, "The Nishad community, which majorly comprises of boatmen, has an unbreakable relationship with Lord Shri Ram. While going to the forest, Nishad Raj had helped Lord Shri Ram, Lakshman and Maa Sita cross the river in his boat without charging any fee." "Taking this tradition forward, free boat service will be provided to the devotees and tourists going from one end of the Ganga to the other at all the 84 ghats of Banaras on the consecration ceremony of Ram Mandir," Sahni added.
The decision in this regard was taken at a meeting of the trust, he said.
On the occasion of the Ram temple consecration, a 'shobha yatra' (procession) will also be taken out from Raj Ghat to Nishadraj Ghat in which hundreds of people are expected to participate, Sahni added

As per the data revealed, more than 97 lakh tourists visited Varanasi in August.

The total number of people visiting Varanasi in the last two years has gone up to more than 13 crores, according to the data revealed by the Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department on Tuesday.
The Tourism Department's figures have revealed more than 5.38 crore tourists visited Kashi till December 2 this year.
According to the data, in 2023, the highest number of 97,22,206 tourists arrived in Varanasi in August, followed by 72,62,891 in July. The tourists' flow to Varanasi was 44,29,590 in January, 42,67,858 tourists in April, 41,34,807 in February, 37,81,060 tourists in March, 32,25,476 in May, 36,96,346 in June, 38,97,844 in September, 42,55,674 in October and 48,26,776 in November.

Hours after an archaeological survey reportedly began at the Gyanvapi mosque in Varanasi, the Supreme Court ordered the suspension of the study.
The top court on July 24 paused the analysis by the Archaeological Survey of India till 5 pm on July 26.
The judges asked the Allahabad High Court to hear an appeal filed by the mosque committee against a district court's order which allowed the ASI survey.
The study was ordered to see if the mosque was built on a pre-existing Hindu temple.

&nbsp;A vegetable seller in the Lanka area of Varanasi has deployed two bouncers to prevent buyers from getting aggressive while haggling the tomato prices, which have soared almost across the country, virtually making them a luxury item.
Ajay Fauji, a Samajwadi Party worker, had earlier cut a tomato-shaped cake in Varanasi on the birthday of Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav.
"I kept hearing about arguments over the tomato price among people. People at my shop too tried to haggle. So to put an end to the constant arguments, I decided to deploy bouncers in uniform at my cart," Fauji told PTI.
Fauji, who is selling tomatoes at Rs 140-160 per kg, has bouncers deployed at his cart from 9 am to 5 pm.
He, however, refused to reveal how much he hired them for. "No one will provide bouncers free of cost." Asked how keeping bouncers at his cart has helped him, Fauji said even though people are coming in same numbers, they are less militant about the pricing now.

Prohibitory orders were clamped and security tightened in Varanasi ahead of the district court order on Monday on the maintainability of civil suits challenging the title of the Gyanvapi mosque and the land surrounding it. 

Officers have been asked to interact with religious leaders in their respective areas to ensure peace is maintained.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Gyanvapi case: Prohibitory orders were clamped and security tightened in Varanasi ahead of the district court order on Monday on the maintainability of civil suits challenging the title of the Gyanvapi mosque and the land surrounding it.
District Judge AK Vishvesh had last month reserved the order till September 12 in the communally sensitive matter.
Police Commissioner A Satish Ganesh said on Sunday that prohibitory orders have been issued in the Varanasi commissionerate and officers have been asked to interact with religious leaders in their respective areas to ensure that peace is maintained.
To maintain law and order, he said, the entire city has been divided into sectors which have been allocated police force as per their requirement.
Directives for flag march and foot march in sensitive areas have also been issued, he said.
Checking has been intensified in the district's border areas, hotels and guest houses, while an eye is being also kept on social media.
Five women had filed the petition seeking permission for daily worship of Hindu deities whose idols are said to be located on an outer wall of the Gyanvapi mosque.

The Anjuman Intezamia Masjid Committee has said the Gyanvapi mosque is a Waqf property and has questioned the maintainability of the plea.
Madan Mohan Yadav, a lawyer of the Hindu side, had said that the mosque was constructed after demolishing the temple.
The case is being heard by the district court following an apex court order.
Earlier, a lower court had ordered a videography survey of the complex. The survey work was completed on May 16 and the report was presented in the court on May 19.
The Hindu side had claimed in the lower court that a Shivling was found during the videography survey of the Gyanvapi mosque-Shringar Gauri complex but it was contested by the Muslim side.&nbsp;

The other important point is that the court-appointed commissioner did not approach the court. The petitioners' lawyer rushed to court and the judge issued an order. If there was a shivling, then the court-appointed commissioner should have said it."
The AIMIM chief also questioned the validity of the court order to seal the 'wuzu' pond where the alleged shivling was found. He said, "The court's order to seal the mosque area is in violation of the 1991 Act passed by Parliament. Read paragraph 83 of the Supreme Court's verdict in Babri Masjid-Ram Janmabhoomi title suit. SC said that the 1991 Act is part of the Constitution's basic structure."
In response, Keshav Prasad Maurya, deputy chief minister of UP, said, "When Congress was in power, it used to bring laws which exacerbate such issues. At that time, the Ram Janmabhoomi campaign was taking place. (The 1991 Act was implemented) to prevent similar campaigns elsewhere. A shivling has not emerged there because of a campaign. A court was hearing a case, and upon its orders, a survey was done. According to the survey report, Baba Vishwanath has been found there. We are all celebrating. Statements by the Muslim side, or other politicians who practice appeasement, should stop. The situation in UP is very good."
The official report of the court-mandated survey of the mosque was not known by May 16. The claim that a shivling has been found was made by one of the petitioners.

He cited the Babri Masjid-Ram Janmabhoomi dispute, and invoked the ongoing Gyanvapi-Shringar Gauri case. "We cannot change the government. If we could, then why would the Indian Parliament have so few Muslim members? When was the last time that a Muslim MP was elected from Gujarat? If we could change government... the Babri Masjid issue has been adjudicated by the courts, and now Gyanvapi Mosque issue has erupted. You are free to disagree with me," he added.
