BJP's Pilibhit MP Varun Gandhi did not turn up in Pilibhit on the last day of filing of nominations for the seat, putting at rest speculation that he might enter the fray as an independent candidate after the party denied him a ticket.
The BJP had replaced him with Uttar Pradesh minister Jitin Prasada, who filed his nomination papers from the Pilibhit seat on Wednesday in the presence of his ministerial colleague Swatantra Dev Singh and party state president Bhupendra Chaudhary.
The speculation over Varun Gandhi contesting from Pilibhit had intensified after his representative bought a set of nomination papers last week.
This is for the first time in over three decades that the mother-son duo of Maneka and Varun Gandhi will not be in the fray from the Pilibhit constituency which is located in the Terai belt bordering Nepal.
The denial of ticket to Varun Gandhi this time did not come as a surprise as he has been criticising the BJP on the issues of farmers, health and jobs.
After he was replaced by Prasada, reports did the rounds that Varun Gandhi might contest from the seat as an independent candidate. The suspense ended on Wednesday when he did not turn up before the nominations ended at 3 pm on the day.
His mother Maneka Gandhi, the sitting MP from Sultanpur, was, however, given another chance from the same seat by the BJP.
The Pilibhit seat has remained with Maneka Gandhi or her son Varun Gandhi since 1996.
Maneka Gandhi won the seat on a Janata Dal ticket in 1989, lost in 1991 and won again in 1996. She won from the constituency in 1998 and 1999 as an Independent candidate. She won the seat in 2004 and 2014 as a BJP candidate.
Varun Gandhi won the seat in 2009 and 2019 as a BJP candidate.
Addressing a rally after Prasada filed the nomination papers, Chaudhary said, "Varun Gandhi is a senior leader and the party will soon give him some task." Swatantra Dev Singh said, "Varun Gandhi is our leader and the party will use him at some other place." The main opposition, the Samajwadi Party, has made Bhagwat Saran Gangwar its candidate from Pilibhit. The Bahujan Samaj Party has fielded Anis Ahmed Khan as its nominee from the constituency.&nbsp;

Chowdhury said that the party leaders will be happy if Varun Gandhi joins the Congress.&nbsp;
He also said that the BJP had not given him a ticket because he is related to the Gandhis.&nbsp;
'He should come here. We would be happy. He is an educated man. He has a clean image. BJP denied him a ticket because he is related to the Gandhi family. I think he should come,' the Congress leader told reporters.&nbsp;

The Bharatiya Janata Party on 24th March dropped sitting MP Varun Gandhi from its fifth candidate list and replaced him with Congress turncoat Jitin Prasada for Pilibhit Lok Sabha constituency.
There have been doubts over Varun getting BJP ticket again as he has been taking a critical stand on many issues against the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre and Yogi Adityanath-led state government in Uttar Pradesh.
There are also reports that Varun might join the Samajwadi Party.
Earlier on March 20, Akhilesh Yadav said that the party will take an appropriate call if Varun doesn't get a BJP ticket.
&ldquo;The party will take a call (on giving a ticket to Varun) if such a situation arises,&rdquo; he said.&nbsp;
Meanwhile, the BJP has retained his mother and former union minister Maneka Gandhi. She will continue to contest from Uttar Pradesh's Sultanpur.&nbsp;
The BJP has fielded Atul Garg from Ghaziabad and dropped sitting MP and Union Minister V K Singh. Shortly before the list was announced, Singh said in a post on X that he will not contest the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.
Similarly, the party has fielded Ramesh Awasthi from Kanpur Lok Sabha seat, after sitting MP Satyadev Pachauri on Sunday expressed his unwillingness to contest the elections and conveyed the same to the party's national president J P Nadda.
This is the second list of candidates from UP released by the BJP for the Lok Sabha elections. The party is yet to declare its candidate for the Raebareli Lok Sabha seat.
In Budaun, the party has announced the name of Durvijay Singh Shakya, overlooking its current MP Sanghamitra Maurya.
In Bareilly, the party has replaced sitting MP Santosh Gangwar and given the ticket to Chattrapal Singh Gangwar.
The party has announced Raghav Lakhanpal as its nominee from Saharanpur, Sarvesh Singh from Moradabad and Satish Gautam from Aligarh seats.
On the reserved seats of Barabanki and Bahraich, the BJP has named Rajrani Rawat and Arvind Gond respectively.
The BJP in its first list had named its sitting MP Upendra Rawat from Barabanki. Rawat, however, refused to contest the election after an obscene video allegedly involving him surfaced on social media.

Gandhi has been questioning the 'Agnipath' scheme since it was unveiled on June 14 by the Centre. The scheme envisages recruiting young soldiers on a contractual basis for four years and retire 75 per cent of them without pension and health benefits. It, however, assures them of an exit package of Rs 11.70 lakh.
"If Agniveers who serve for a short period of time are not entitled to a pension, then why this 'facility' should be for public representatives? If those who protect the country do not have the right to pension then I am also ready to forego mine," he said in a tweet in Hindi.
"Can we, the MLA/sMPs, give up our pension to ensure that Agniveers get a pension," he said.
Earlier, he had extended support to students protesting against the Agnipath defence recruitment scheme, but had urged them to follow the path of non-violence.

MPs can pilot private members' bill in their personal capacity irrespective of their party affiliations. Since 1952, only about a dozen private members' bills have been passed.
As per Gandhi's proposed legislation, any farmer realising a price less than the above declared MSP shall be entitled to a compensation equal to the difference in value between price realised and the guaranteed MSP.
It also proposes that payments should be made directly into the accounts of farmers within two days of the transaction.
The proposed legislation came a week after the central government had introduced a bill to repeal the contentious three farm laws.
The protesting farmers have postponed their stir from the borders of the national capital and started returning home after the Centre assured them of taking back cases, and forming a committee to look into the issue of MSP.
Gandhi, the Pilibhit MP, had been publicly supporting farmers' and suggesting the government to engage with them.
He was among the first to seek "strict action" against his own party leader and Union Minister Ajay Kumar Mishra for his son's alleged involvement in the Lakhimpur Kheri incident that left four farmers dead.
A day after the Prime Minister had announced the repeal of three farm laws, Gandhi wrote to Modi that many "innocent lives" could have been saved had the decision been taken earlier.
On the issues related to farmers, Gandhi has been taking a stand in support of farmers that appears to be not in line with the BJP's official stance.
Giving rationale for the bill, Gandhi said the declaration of guaranteed MSP to farmers shall result in improved farm realisation for potentially 93 million agricultural households, leading to a resurgence in the rural economy.

Continuing to back the demands of farmers, BJP MP Varun Gandhi has piloted a private member's bill seeking a legal guarantee of MSP with a financial outlay of Rs 1 lakh crore.
The bill titled -- The Farmers Right To Guaranteed Minimum Support Price Realization Of Agri-Produce Bill, 2021 -- it&nbsp;aims to provide a legally guaranteed <a href="https://www.editorji.com/business-news/budget/budget-2022-rs-2-3-lakh-crore-to-be-directly-paid-as-msp-to-farmers-1643697465767" target="_blank">minimum support price (MSP)</a> for 22 crops that should be set at a profit margin of 50 percent over the comprehensive cost of production.
Gandhi has submitted the bill in Parliament but it is yet to be introduced.
MPs can pilot private members' bills in their personal capacity irrespective of their party affiliations. Since 1952, only about a dozen private members' bills have been passed.
As per Gandhi's proposed legislation, any farmer realizing a price less than the above declared MSP shall be entitled to compensation equal to the difference in value between the price realized and the guaranteed MSP.

It also proposes that payments should be made directly into the accounts of farmers within two days of the transaction.
The proposed legislation came a week after the central government had introduced a bill to repeal the contentious three farm laws.
The protesting farmers have postponed their stir from the borders of the national capital and started returning home after the Centre assured them of taking back cases and forming a committee to look into the issue of MSP.
Gandhi, the Pilibhit MP, had been publicly supporting farmers' and suggesting the government to engage with them.
He was among the first to seek "strict action" against his own party leader and Union Minister Ajay Kumar Mishra for his son's alleged involvement in the Lakhimpur Kheri incident that left four farmers dead.
A day after the Prime Minister had announced the repeal of three farm laws, Gandhi wrote to Modi that many "innocent lives" could have been saved had the decision been taken earlier.
On the issues related to farmers, Gandhi has been taking a stand in support of farmers that appears to be not in line with the BJP's official stance.
Giving the rationale for the bill, Gandhi said the declaration of guaranteed MSP to farmers shall result in improved farm realization for potentially 93 million agricultural households, leading to a resurgence in the rural economy.

Playing down her non-inclusion in the overhauled BJP national executive, Maneka Gandhi has said she was satisfied to be in the party for 20 years and that her non-inclusion in the top panel does not reduce her stature.
