A nearly four-minute eruption occurred at 3:03 pm (0703 GMT), sending a four-kilometre (2.5-mile) ash column above the crater and a deadly spurt of hot ash, gases and fragmented volcanic rock about 3.4 kilometres down the mountain's southeast flank, officials told a news conference.
They warned that more explosive eruptions could follow shortly.
"Getting hit by these pyroclastic density currents is like being run over by a high-speed vehicle," said Maria Antonia Bornas, volcano monitoring chief of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.
"If the ash enters your lungs it would cause asphyxiation," she said, urging local officials to evacuate 15 villages within six kilometres of the crater.
She said ash from the eruption rained down on several nearby towns and cities around the volcano, though there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
She also warned heavy rain could dislodge the fresh volcanic sediment from the latest eruption, which could bury communities below.
"Evacuations are ongoing" in four upland villages of La Castellana town, on the volcano's southwest slope, municipal police officer Staff Sergeant Ronel Arevalo told AFP, adding he did not have the total number of residents to be evacuated.
La Castellana resident Dianne Paula Abendan, 24, used her mobile phone to take a video clip of a giant cauliflower-shaped grey mass of smoke billowing above the crater.
"These past few days we've seen black smoke coming out of (the) volcano. We were expecting that it would erupt anytime this week," she told AFP by phone.
Abendan said people rushed home to await evacuation orders, but added that the volcanic activity appeared to ease slightly about an hour later.
Authorities said flights to and from the Bacolod-Silay international airport, nearest the volcano, remained normal, but carriers were warned from flying below 3,000 metres (10,000 feet) near the volcano.
"Flight operators are advised to avoid flying close to the volcano due to possible hazards of sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions and precursory magmatic activity," said an official bulletin from the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines.
In September hundreds of nearby residents were evacuated after the volcano spurted thousands of tonnes of harmful gases in a single day.
The seismology office said Kanlaon has erupted more than 40 times since 1866.
In 1996 three hikers were killed due to ash ejection from the volcano.

The visuals of the volcano eruption are currently doing rounds on the internet. The office said tephra, a foamy bubble-rich material, has been falling around Grindayik. The material is created when splinters of mercury cool quickly.
Iceland President Guoni Th. Johannesson posted a picture of the eruption on social media. He shared the post, with a caption that read, "The view outside my residence as I woke up this morning. "This is the third eruption in three months. Flights to and from Iceland are not at all affected. As before, our thoughts are with the people of Grindayik who cannot reside in their beautiful town. This too shall pass."

Lava flowing from a volcano that erupted on Sunday near the Icelandic fishing port of Grindavik has engulfed at least three homes just hours after villagers were evacuated to safety, authorities said.
It was the North Atlantic nation's fifth volcanic eruption in under three years.
The most recent occurred just weeks ago on December 18 in the same region, southwest of the capital Reykjavik.
At least three houses were engulfed in fire as glowing orange lava flowed into the edge of the town of Grindavik, live images broadcast by public television RUV showed.
"In a little village like this one, we're like a family, we all know each other as family -- it's tragic seeing this," local resident Sveinn Ari Gudjonsson told AFP.
"It's unreal, it's like watching a film," added the 55-year-old, who works in the fishing industry.
Most of the 4,000-strong population of Grindavik had been evacuated as a precaution on November 11 after scientists said a magma dyke was shifting beneath them.
At the time, a series of small earthquakes -- sometimes hundreds per day -- had created large cracks in roads, homes and buildings.

On Sunday, a first eruption began at 8:00 am (0800 GMT) when a crack opened in the ground around 450 meters (500 yards) from the town.
At 1845 GMT, the Icelandic Metereological Office (IMO) said that fissure measured around 900 meters long, and crossed over the main road to Grindavik.
A second fissure then opened around midday on the edge of town, with that lava engulfing the homes. It measured around 100 meters by evening, IMO said.
Jets of orange lava and plumes of smoke spewed into the sky from the two cracks throughout the day.
The eruption knocked out electricity and hot and cold water in Grindavik, authorities said, but airline flights were not affected.
At a press conference, Prime Minister Katrin Jakobsdottir called Sunday a "black day today for Grindavik and ... for all of Iceland. But the sun will come up again."
The head of Iceland's Civil Protection and Emergency Management, Vidir Reynisson, said the eruption was "the most serious threat" posed by a volcanic eruption in Iceland since January 1973.
Back then, a fissure erupted just 150 metres from the town centre on Heimaey in the Vestmann Islands, surprising locals at dawn.
A third of homes were destroyed and the 5,300 residents were evacuated. One person died.
In a rare address to the nation, Iceland's President Gudni Johannesson said he "hoped the situation would calm down, but anything can happen".
Amid the uncertainty facing the town, he urged Icelanders to "stand together and have compassion for those who cannot be in their homes."
Shortly after the December 18 eruption, Grindavik residents were allowed to return for brief periods.
They were authorised to regain their homes permanently on December 23 but only a few dozen chose to do so.

Late on Saturday, authorities had ordered an emergency evacuation to be completed by Monday due to growing seismic activity and its impact on the large cracks already present in the town.
On Wednesday, a 51-year-old Icelandic workman who was repairing a crack in a residential garden disappeared when the ground suddenly gave way beneath him.
He fell more than 30 metres. The intensive search to find him was called off on Friday because the area was too dangerous.
Authorities accelerated the evacuation order overnight when seismic activity intensified.
Officials are keeping a close eye on the nearby Svartsengi geothermal plant, which provides electricity and water to the 30,000 residents of the Reykjanes peninsula.
Workmen have been building a wall to protect the facility since November.
Until March 2021, the Reykjanes peninsula had not experienced an eruption for eight centuries.
Fresh eruptions occurred in August 2022, and July and December 2023, leading volcanologists to say it was probably the start of a new era of activity in the region.
Four days after the December 18 eruption, authorities said volcanic activity had stopped but they could not declare the eruption over because there was still a possibility of underground lava flow.
Iceland is home to 33 active volcano systems, the highest number in Europe.
It straddles the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a crack in the ocean floor separating the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates.

Eight of those rescued Sunday were rushed to hospitals with burn wounds and one also had a broken limb, said Hari Agustian, an official at the local Search and Rescue Agency in Padang, the provincial capital.

The Cessna 340 aircraft with four on board went missing shortly after departing for Manila from Bicol International Airport in Albay province, several kilometres from Mayon volcano, on Saturday.
Manila-based Energy Development Corporation said the missing plane belonged to the company and it was seeking to confirm if the wreckage spotted on Sunday in "very steep terrain and high altitude of about 6,000 feet" was theirs.
Two of the four passengers on board the missing plane were Australian, Bicol police said, adding rescue teams with sniffer dogs had been deployed to find the crash site.

A simulation of what would actually happen has gone viral on the internet. A decade old video has resurfaced on Twitter demonstrating an experiment involving throwing a 30-kilogram bundle of organic waste (similar to human physiology, eliciting the same response) into Erta Ale, an active volcano in Ethiopia, to simulate what happens if a human falls into it.&nbsp;
In the video, it's seen that once the waste is dropped, the first layer of solidified ash that forms over molten lava breaks and submerges to waste as it enters the lava lake.&nbsp;
Soon after, lava fountain bubbles are seen and they grow in response to the breakage.
Since it was shared, the video has garnered 8.7 million views and over a lakh likes.&nbsp;
The original video was shared 10 years ago on YouTube on Photovolcanica, a channel run by geothermal enthusiasts. The video's captions reads, 'It is frequently discussed whether it is possible to sink in lava. Due to its high density, a person would generally be expected to remain on the surface.&nbsp;

Indeed it is possible to briefly walk on certain types of lava if professional heat-protective clothing is worn (do not &nbsp;try yourself). However, the video shows that falling from a height, a large object and thus also a person would be able to penetrate the crust of the lake and submerge in it.'
The caption then goes on to add that the experiment was carried out using a cardboard box filled with camp waste (mostly food rests) weighing 30 kilograms with dimensions 60x60x60 cm. The waste's drop heigh is estimated to be approximately 80 metres. The lake erupts with violent lava owing to steam produced by organic matter.&nbsp;

The island is situated on the Home Reef seamount in the Central Tonga Islands, according to NASA. However, the space agency believes that the newborn island might not be around for a long time. 
'Islands created by submarine volcanoes are often short-lived, though they occasionally persist for years,' NASA explained. 'An island created by a 12-day eruption from nearby Late'iki Volcano in 2020 washed away after two months, while an earlier island created in 1995 by the same volcano remained for 25 years,' it added. 
A Facebook statement of Tonga Geological Survey said that as of Monday, the seamount continues to erupt, leaving ash in its wake. However, it also added that the volcanic activity does not pose a threat to local residents of two islands nearby.

The Icelandic Meteorological Office urged people not to go near the Fagradalsfjall volcano, which is located some 32 kilometers (20 miles) southwest of the capital, Reykjavik.
