West Bengal BJP's Murshidabad unit has announced plans to construct a Ram temple in Berhampore, days after TMC MLA Humayun Kabir proposed to set up a mosque modelled after the Babri Masjid at Beldanga in the same district.
The BJP said the temple&rsquo;s construction will begin on January 22, 2025, exactly one year after the inauguration of the Ram temple in Ayodhya. BJP&rsquo;s Berhampore organisational district president, Shakharav Sarkar, said land for the temple has already been identified, and the project is estimated to cost Rs 10 crore.&nbsp;
"We have already identified a land in Beharampore area and the construction work for the Ram Temple based on the design of the temple on Ayodhya will begin soon," he told reporters.
Kabir, the TMC MLA from Beldanga, had on Tuesday announced plans for the mosque, which he said would honour the sentiments of the region&rsquo;s significant minority population.
His remarks have sparked political controversy, with opposition parties accusing him of attempting to polarise communities for political gain.
The BJP&rsquo;s counterproposal to build a Ram temple is seen as a strategic move to strengthen its presence among the Hindu community in Murshidabad, a district where minorities make up around 75 per cent of the population.
Responding to the controversy, the TMC distanced itself from Kabir&rsquo;s remarks, describing them as his personal opinion.
&ldquo;The TMC has nothing to do with this statement of Kabir,&rdquo; a senior party leader said.&nbsp;
Kabir&rsquo;s announcement has also drawn criticism from the Congress, which accused him of playing divisive politics in a sensitive region.

A video of a woman being flogged in public in West Bengal over her illicit affair had sparked off a national furore, with the incident even being raised by PM Modi in the Rajya Sabha.&nbsp;
Days after the video went viral, the woman spoke to the Indian Express newspaper detailing her ordeal.&nbsp;
In the interview, the 38-year-old woman said that she was prepared for such an assault, but did not expect the video to go viral.&nbsp;
"Can you plan and fall in love?&rdquo; she said.
&ldquo;What happened here would have stayed here if the video didn&rsquo;t spread,&rdquo; she was quoted as saying.
The woman, who married 18 years ago and has two children, said that she fell in love with another man five years ago. &nbsp;
At first, they would meet in secret, but when her husband found out, she was asked to leave home. On June 27, she said that she moved in with the other man, who is 35 and also married. But on the next that, i.e., June 28, a kangaroo court was called, during which the main accused, TMC&rsquo;s Tajimul Islam alias JCB, showed up. She said that it was Islam who led the assault.
For hours, the couple was flogged relentlessly even as they pleaded for mercy from the dozens of crowd who were baying for their blood to mete out so-called "justice". According to the Indian Express, the incident took place a stone&rsquo;s throw from the woman&rsquo;s home.
After the video went viral, the police came into action and slammed attempted murder charge, and Islam was subsequently arrested.&nbsp;
Putting the horrible incident behind her past, the woman said that she will now live her "life on her own terms."
The woman has been sequestered in Uttar Dinajpur, where several policemen stand guard, according to the report.

A man who was seen assaulting a couple over illicit relationship has been arrested by West Bengal police.&nbsp;

The West Bengal Police on Sunday registered a case after a video clip of a brutal assault on a couple allegedly engaged in an illicit relationship went viral, sparking widespread outrage.
The man who was seen in the video beating up the two with a bamboo stick was allegedly a local TMC leader of Chopra in Uttar Dinajpur district where the incident occurred following a decision of a kangaroo court.
PTI could not independently verify the authenticity of the video.
The accused, Tajmul alias JCB, was arrested.
While the opposition BJP, Congress and CPI(M) slammed the Mamata Banerjee government for the incident, the ruling TMC said the matter will be investigated.
"Efforts are being made from certain quarters to spread misinformation about an incident in Chopra PS under Islampur PD. The fact is, police have promptly identified and arrested one person who had publicly assaulted a lady," the Islampur Police District said in a statement.
The statement said that the victim couple has been provided with police security.
A case has been registered suo motu and an investigation has begun, it said.
Islampur Police Superintendent Joby Thomas K earlier in the day said the police have watched the video clip on social media and have registered a case after verification.
The viral video clip showed the accused beating up the woman who grimaced in pain, as a large number of people were watching. He was seen pulling her by the hair and kicking her. The accused also thrashed a man with the stick.
"This is the ugly face of Mamata Banerjee&rsquo;s rule in West Bengal. The guy in the video, who is beating up a woman mercilessly... is famous for giving quick justice through his &lsquo;insaf&rsquo; sabha and is a close associate of Chopra MLA Hamidur Rahaman," BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya said in a post on X, sharing the video.
He claimed that there is a Sandeshkhali in every village of West Bengal and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is a "curse for women".
"There is no semblance of law and order in Bengal. Will Mamata Banerjee act against this monster or defend him like she stood up for Sheikh Shahjahan?" Malviya said in the post.
Shahjahan is an arrested TMC functionary of Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district, where allegations of sexual abuse and land grab have been levelled against Trinamool Congress leaders.
Attacking the Mamata Banerjee government, CPI(M) state secretary Md Salim said in a post on X: "Not even #KangarooCourt! Summary trial and punishment handed out by d ⁦@AITCofficial⁩ goon... Literally bulldozer justice at Chopra under ⁦@MamataOfficial⁩ rule.
In a later post, Salim shared a video in which police personnel, along with the accused, were seen entering Islampur police station.
He claimed, "As usual, the sentry guard was about to offer salute!" State Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury alleged that attacks on ordinary people and the TMC's political opponents are continuing in West Bengal, though the Trinamool Congress won the Lok Sabha elections in the state.
"How can a woman be beaten up in this way? Attack on any woman is barbaric and deplorable,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;Such incidents of violence are giving a bad name to West Bengal," the senior Congress leader said.
Local TMC MLA Hamidur Rahman denied he has any connection with the accused and distanced himself from the incident.
He said it was a village matter and not related to the party.
TMC district president Kaniyalal Agarwal attributed the incident to the couple's alleged illicit relationship, which "did not go down well with the villagers".
He said that the party would investigate the episode.
TMC spokesperson Shantanu Sen condemned the incident but also pointed out that such kangaroo courts were common during the Left Front regime too.

BJP and CPI(M) alleged that the perpetrator is a TMC worker named Tajemul, who is popularly known as JCB.&nbsp;

Sporadic incidents of violence marred the seventh and final phase of Lok Sabha polls in the nine parliamentary constituencies in West Bengal, as TMC, ISF and BJP workers clashed in various parts of violence-prone Jadavpur and Diamond Harbour constituencies.
Although the poll panel has claimed that voting has been peaceful so far, it said it has received 1,450 complaints until 11 am from different political parties alleging EVM malfunctions and agents being stopped from entering booths.
Around 28.10 per cent of over 1.63 crore voters exercised their franchise in the first two hours of polling to the nine Lok Sabha seats, an Election Commission official said.

Angry voters of Kultuli within Joynagar constituency took drastic measures by hurling electronic voting machines (EVMs) and Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail (VV-PAT) machines into nearby waterbodies. Their actions were fueled by feelings of electoral misconduct, reflecting their frustration over perceived voting restrictions.
"Today morning at 6.40 am Reserve EVMs &amp; papers of Sector Officer near Benimadhavpur FP school, at 129-Kultali AC of 19-Jaynagar (SC) PC has been looted by local mob and 1 CU, 1 BU , 2VVPAT machines have been thrown inside a pond," the office of CEO West Bengal posted on X.
"Sector Police was a little behind. FIR has been lodged by Sector Officer and necessary action has been initiated. Poll process in all six booths under the Sector is running uninterrupted. Fresh EVM and papers have been provided to the Sector Officer," it further said.
TMC supporters have accused the ISF of orchestrating the violence to intimidate voters. Prompt action from local law enforcement led to lathi charges and the arrest of suspects in Polerhat area of Bhangar.
Another incident occurred where the vehicle of an ISF worker was vandalized in Baghajatin area. Accusations have been leveled against Trinamool Congress supporters for the alleged incident..
In Diamond Harbour, the pocket borough of TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, who is also seeking re-election, witnessed clashes between TMC and BJP supporters as the saffron party candidate Abhijit Das alleged malpractices by the ruling party. The TMC, however, denied the allegations.
In Jadavpur area's Ganguly Bagan, CPI(M) workers were allegedly beaten by the TMC activists and their camp offices were ransacked. The TMC, however, denied the allegations and accused the Left party of intimidating the voters.
The state Congress unit wrote to CEO Aariz Aftab requesting him to take stern action against alleged irregularities and rigging that are taking place in various pockets.
In Bermajur area of Sandeshkhali, the BJP made allegations that TMC workers, accompanied by policemen, intimidated its polling agents by visiting their homes on Friday night.
Backed by video evidence, the party asserted that the women of Sandeshkhali had expressed their discontent against the TMC government's actions, portraying them as attempts to intimidate the populace ahead of the final phase of elections.&nbsp;

The West Bengal's Criminal Investigation Department on Friday arrested a Bangladeshi national from Mumbai for allegedly murdering Bangladesh MP Anwarul Azim Anar.
The accused has been identified as 24-year-old Jihad Hawladar. He is said to be a resident of Barakpur in Bangladesh&rsquo;s Khulna district. He was working as a butcher in Mumbai.
According to Indian Express newspaper, the killer confessed to the crime. The killer allegedly told the police that he, along with four other Bangladeshi nationals, honey-trapped the MP to an apartment, where they smothered Anar.
Citing circumstantial evidence, police said that the lawmaker was first strangled and then his body was cut into several pieces before being disposed off across Kolkata.
The killers then skinned the body, removed all the flesh, and minced it to make it impossible for identification.
The remains were then packed into plastic bags, with the bones cut into small pieces. These packets were transported and disposed of across Kolkata, the suspect allegedly told the police.
Hawladar has reportedly named a US citizen of Bangladeshi origin as the mastermind.
Police also said that the flat in Kolkata's New Town area, where the Bangladesh MP was last seen entering, was rented out to his friend by its owner, an excise department employee.
"Investigation indicated that the Bangladeshi parliamentarian fell into a honey trap laid by a woman who was also close to the victim's friend. It seems, Anar was lured into the New Town flat by the woman. We suspect he was murdered soon after he went to the flat," he said.
The CID is examining the CCTV footage which showed Anar entering the flat with a man and a woman, the officer said.
"It was a well-planned murder. A huge amount of money, around Rs 5 crore, was paid by an old friend of the MP to the contract killers to execute the crime. Further investigation is underway," he said.
"In the CCTV footage, the politician was seen entering the flat with the two persons. The duo was later seen coming out and again re-entering the flat the next day but the MP was not seen again," the officer told PTI.
Police said the duo was later seen coming out of the flat with a big trolley suitcase.
Anar, who went missing in Kolkata on May 13, was found murdered and three people have been arrested, Bangladesh Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said on Wednesday.
The state CID, which is investigating the case, has found blood stains inside the New Town flat and also recovered several plastic bags, which they believe were used to dump the body parts.

The Calcutta High Court last week scrapped the appointment of nearly 26,000 teachers and non-teaching staff in state-run and state-aided schools.

The Supreme Court on Monday stayed a Calcutta High Court order directing the CBI to probe into the role of West Bengal government officials in a teacher recruitment scam.
The top court was hearing a plea by the West Bengal government against a high court order invalidating the appointment of 25,753 teachers and non-teaching staff made by the School Service Commission (SSC) in state-run and state-aided schools.
A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra said it will hear the matter on May 6.
"We will stay the direction which says the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) will undertake further investigation against officials in the state government," the bench said.
Calcutta High Court had said the CBI would undertake further investigations with regard to the persons involved in the state government approving the creation of supernumerary post to accommodate illegal appointments.
If necessary, the CBI will undertake custodial interrogation of such persons involved, it had said.
Challenging the order, the state government, in its appeal filed before the top court, said the high court cancelled the appointments "arbitrarily".
"The high court failed to appreciate the ramification of cancelling the entire selection process, leading to straightaway termination of teaching and non-teaching staff from service with immediate effect, without giving sufficient time to the petitioner state to deal with such an exigency, rendering the education system at a standstill," the plea said.&nbsp;

The Mamata Banerjee government has filed a Special Leave Petition, arguing that the high court erroneously set aside the entire election process, instead of segregating valid appointments from invalid ones.

The West Bengal government on April 24 moved the Supreme Court against the Calcutta High Court's order that invalidated 24,000 teaching and non-teaching jobs that were filled following the 2016 SSC Recruitment process.
According to LiveLaw outlet, the state has filed a Special Leave Petition, arguing that the high court erroneously set aside the entire election process, instead of segregating valid appointments from invalid ones.
It also said that the order will affect around 24,000 teaching and non-teaching jobs in the state.&nbsp;
While delivering the verdict, the court said, "It is shocking that, at the level of the cabinet of the State Government, decision is taken to protect employment obtained fraudulently in a selection process conducted by SSC for state-funded schools, knowing fully well that, such appointments were obtained beyond the panel and after expiry of the panel," the court said.
The bench had also directed that the CBI will hold further investigations with regard to the "persons involved, in the state government approving creation of supernumerary posts to accommodate illegal appointments" and custodial interrogation will be done if required.

The high court has ordered the cancellation of over 25,700 appointment letters that were issued against the vacancies.

The Calcutta High Court on Monday declared as null and void the recruitment process of State Level Selection Test-2016 (SLST) in West Bengal government-sponsored and aided schools, ordering cancellation of all appointments made through it.
A division bench comprising justices Debangsu Basak and Md Shabbar Rashidi also directed the CBI to undertake further investigation in respect of the appointment process, and submit a report in three months.
The bench directed the West Bengal School Service Commission to initiate a fresh appointment process.
Over 23 lakh candidates had appeared for the SLST-2016 for 24,640 vacant posts.
A total of 25,753 appointment letters were issued against the vacancies, said Firdaus Shamim, a lawyer for some of the petitioners.
The division bench also rejected a prayer by some appellants for a stay on the order.
Moments after the high court order, hundreds of school job aspirants waiting outside its premises rejoiced, as many broke into tears.
&ldquo;We had been waiting for this day. After years of struggle on the streets, justice has finally been delivered," one of them said.
The division bench, formed by the Chief Justice of the high court on a direction of the Supreme Court, had extensively heard numerous petitions and appeals relating to the selection of candidates for appointment by the SSC in the categories of teachers of classes 9, 10, 11 and 12 and group-C and D staffers through the SLST-2016.
Hearing in the matters concluded on March 20 and judegement was reserved by the bench.
On writ petitions by some candidates who appeared in SLST-2016, but did not get jobs, a single bench presided by Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay had ordered CBI investigation into alleged irregularities in the recruitment process.
The high court had also ordered the termination of a number of jobs of teaching and non-teaching staffers after finding irregularities.
Disposing of petitions before it in connection with the matters, the Supreme Court had on November 9, 2023, requested the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court to constitute a division bench to hear all the petitions and appeals pertaining to the recruitment process through SLST-2016 for early adjudication.
The apex court had in its order accorded protection to the appointments, which were terminated by the high court, for a period of six months to enable the division bench to adjudicate on the disputes.
The CBI had completed the investigation into the matters and submitted a report before the high court in accordance with the direction of the Supreme Court to do so within two months from the date of its order.
The central probe agency has arrested former state education minister Partha Chatterjee and some functionaries, who held positions in the West Bengal School Service Commission (SSC) when the alleged scam took place.&nbsp;

Phone-taping allegations
In 2009, faced allegations from TMC's then national general secretary Mukul Roy. Roy accused him of engaging in phone surveillance of then railway minister and TMC leader Mamata Banerjee on behalf of the Left Front government. But when Mamata became the chief minister, Kumar was accused of tapping the phones of the BJP leaders.
Sharada scam case
The CBI has accused Kumar of allegedly suppressing and destroying evidence in the investigation of the Saradha scam while leading a SIT set up by the state government to probe the matter.
Close relations with Mamata Banerjee
Kumar is considered close to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. When an all-out war broke out between the Centre and the Mamata Banerjee government on February 3, 2019, in connection with chit fund scams, the Bengal leader began an &ldquo;indefinite dharna&rdquo; in the heart of Kolkata over the CBI's attempt to question Kumar.
Stellar reputation
A 1989-batch IPS officer with an engineering degree from IIT Roorkee, Kumar held prominent positions such as commissioner of Kolkata Police, joint commissioner (Special Task Force), and director general (CID), among others. Under his leadership, the STF of Kolkata Police gained notoriety for its operations against Maoist leaders and criminals.
Renowned for his prowess as an investigator and a formidable information network, he played a crucial role in apprehending Chattaradhar Mahato, a significant figure in the Lalgarh movement. Additionally, he oversaw the STF's pivotal contributions in undermining the Maoist movement from 2009 to 2011.
Former Delhi Police commissioner Neeraj Kumar in his book 'Dial D for Don' praised Rajeev Kumar's investigation as senior superintendent of CID after the American Center attack in 2001 and the high-profile kidnapping case of Khadim shoe company's CEO Partha Pratim Roy Burman.

The rally, themed 'Mahila Der Adhikaar, Aamader Angikaar' (women's rights are our commitment), was organised by the ruling TMC a day ahead of International Women's Day.
The rally was organised amid incidents in Sandeshkhali, where women have accused TMC leaders of sexually abusing them.
The Trinamool Congress supremo was seen waving at people as she marched from College Street to Dorina Crossing in central Kolkata.
She also accused the BJP of spreading canards about Sandeshkhali, and asserted that the state is the safest place in the country for women.
In an apparent reference to former Calcutta High Court judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay, who joined the BJP during the day, she said, &ldquo;We will ensure your defeat no matter from where you contest in the Lok Sabha polls.&rdquo;
Addressing people after leading a rally in Kolkata for women&rsquo;s rights, she said, &ldquo;Some people are spreading fake information about Sandeshkhali. BJP leaders are spreading canards about the safety of women in West Bengal but they maintain a stoic silence when women are tortured in BJP-ruled states.&rdquo; &ldquo;West Bengal is the safest state in the country for women,&rdquo; she said.
Hitting out at Gangopadhyay for &ldquo;taking away jobs of thousands of youths&rdquo; across the state through his judgments, Banerjee said, &ldquo;The youths will not forgive you. All your judgments are under question. We will ensure your defeat.&rdquo;
TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee was also present at the rally. BJP's Ranaghat Dakshin MLA Mukut Mani Adhikari was seen walking alongside him.&nbsp;

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday began raids at the residences and office of a builder, who is considered close to former West Bengal minister Partha Chatterjee, in connection with its probe into alleged irregularities in the recruitment in primary schools in the state, an official said.
Accompanied by central forces, ED teams raided an office and three flats of the businessman, one of which is just opposite the Chatterjee&rsquo;s house, in Naktala in the southern part of Kolkata, he said.
&ldquo;The builder has played a significant role in the scam. It seems that the person has helped the arrested minister in investing the money garnered from the scam in different projects,&rdquo; the ED officer told PTI.
Chatterjee was arrested by the central agency in connection with alleged irregularities in recruitment in government-aided schools.
The ED had earlier questioned the builder twice in connection with the alleged scam.
&ldquo;Several documents and bank details seized from the possession of the person have proved that Chatterjee has taken his help to invest money gained from the primary school scam,&rdquo; the official added.

A car in which Rahul Gandhi was travelling in West Bengal's Malda district as part of 'Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra' was pelted with stones by unidentified persons on Wednesday, claimed state party chief Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.
The rear window pane of the vehicle was smashed in the incident but Gandhi did not suffer any injury.
Television visuals showed Gandhi alighting from the vehicle after reaching a designated halt and inspecting the damaged windowpane.
The attack took place in Malda's Harischandrapur area as the yatra re-entered West Bengal from Bihar.

West Bengal Governor Dr CV Ananda Bose on Friday condemned the attack on Enforcement Directorate (ED) officers by supporters of a TMC leader when they went to his Sandeshkhali residence in the state, and hit out at the state government for failing to contain the law and order situation there.
In a stern message to the Trinamool Congress government, Bose said that he would explore his Constitutional options and take appropriate action.
"The ghastly incident in Sandeshkhali is alarming and deplorable. It's the duty of a civilised government to stop barbarism and vandalism in a democracy. As a Governor, I explore all my Constitutional options for appropriate action at the appropriate manner," Bose said in a voice message released from the Raj Bhavan.
He also stated that Bengal is not a banana republic and the government should stop barbarism and vandalism in a democracy.

ED officers were on Friday assaulted and their vehicles were damaged allegedly by supporters of TMC leader Sheikh Sajahan when they tried to raid his residence in West Bengal&rsquo;s North 24 Parganas district in connection with their probe into the ration distribution scam.
The ED officers are conducting raids at 15 places in the state during the day and Sajahan&rsquo;s house is one of them, an officer said.
A large number of TMC loyalists first gheraoed the ED officials and the central forces personnel who accompanied them when they reached Sheikh's residence in Sandeshkhali area in the morning and demonstrated before assaulting them and forcing them to leave the area, the officer said.
One of the officers suffered head injuries and had to be taken to a hospital, he said.
Sajahan is considered to be a close aide of state minister Jyotipriyo Mallick who was arrested in connection with the multi-crore ration distribution scam.
"This kind of attack is unprecedented. We have sent a report on Shiekh Sajahan to our Delhi office," the ED officer told PTI.
Sajahan&rsquo;s supporters attacked the officials and the central forces personnel when they tried to break the lock of the gate of his residence which was not opened by the TMC leader despite several calls made by them, he said.
Senior police officers including the SP of North 24 Parganas district did not communicate when the ED officers tried to contact them, he alleged.
The ED officers are conducting raids at 15 places in West Bengal in connection with the scam.

BJP workers locked up Union minister Subhas Sarkar in their party office in West Bengal's Bankura on Tuesday, alleging that he was being "dictatorial" in running the district unit.
Sarkar, the MoS for Education and MP of Bankura, was chairing a meeting around 1 pm when a group of BJP workers shouting slogans marched into the party's district office and locked him up.
One of the protesters, Mohit Sharma, alleged that Sarkar was not giving importance to dedicated party workers and making people close to him members of the district committee.
"Some of us have been show-caused. We are protesting to save the party. This time, the BJP did not get any seat in Bankura Municipality because of his incompetence. BJP won two wards in the previous election. They could not field candidates in many seats in panchayat. It is a shame," he alleged.
Amid the chaos, another group of BJP workers reached the spot, and a scuffle broke out between the two sides.
A large police contingent went to the party office and rescued Sarkar, a police officer said.
Terming the incident unfortunate, BJP state spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya said that action will be taken against the party workers involved in the incident.
"Such incidents are unacceptable in a disciplined party like the BJP. If there are any grievances, there is a proper forum to raise those. We will look into the incident, and action will be taken against those involved," he said.
Bhattacharya said that Sarkar has no role in the district organisation, and the allegations against him stem from "misunderstandings".
Sarkar, however, could not be reached for comment.
Sharing a video clip of the incident on X, the ruling TMC claimed that with each passing day, the state BJP is crumbling as infighting is reaching its peak.
"In Bankura, vehement clashes erupted, &amp; BJP workers locked Union Minister Subhas Sarkar in the party office. While unity within the party is a myth, BJP is a shining example of a weak foundation and misplaced priorities," it added.
