A severe cold wave has tightened its grip across northern India, with Delhi experiencing its coldest day of the season as the mercury plunged to 4.8 degrees Celsius. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted further drops, predicting a minimum temperature of 4 degrees Celsius on Thursday. On Wednesday, Delhi recorded a minimum of 4.9 degrees Celsius, highlighting the intense cold wave conditions sweeping the region.
The chill has extended beyond the capital, affecting Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and other northern states, while Jammu and Kashmir experienced fresh snowfall on Wednesday, intensifying the winter weather.
The regional meteorological center in Delhi issued a forecast for Thursday, anticipating a "mainly clear sky with cold wave conditions at isolated places." It also warned of smog and mist in the morning and evening, with temperatures expected to range between 23 degrees Celsius (maximum) and 4 degrees Celsius (minimum).
According to a report by PTI, this December's early days have recorded minimum temperatures below 5 degrees Celsius for the first time in 14 years. IMD data reveals that the last comparable minimum temperature during this period was on December 6, 1987, when Delhi saw a record low of 4.1 degrees Celsius.

Cold Wave Forecast for Delhi For December 12, the IMD predicts cold wave conditions at isolated places with predominant surface winds from the northwest, starting at less than 8 kmph in the morning and increasing to 16 kmph in the afternoon. Evening and night will likely see reduced wind speeds and persistent smog or mist.
For December 13, similar conditions are expected, with northwest winds gradually increasing to 10-12 kmph during the afternoon before easing in the evening. The city is likely to see mist or smog during both morning and night.

IMD's Cold Wave Warnings The IMD forecasts that minimum temperatures in northwest and central India will remain consistent over the next four to five days, keeping the cold wave's grip firmly intact across the region.

Large tracts of northern India experienced severe cold day conditions on Thursday as maximum temperatures remained in the range of 12-18 degrees Celsius, several notches below the normal for the season.
The weather office said persistent low cloud cover and absence of sunlight over the region led to the maximum temperatures in parts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and north Madhya Pradesh dropping to below normal, in the range of 2-6 degrees Celsius.
According to the India Meteorological Department, a cold day is declared if the maximum temperature dips between 4.5-6.4 degrees below the normal for the season.
A Severe cold day is declared if temperatures are 6.5 degrees below normal for the season.
In the national capital, mercury touched a maximum of 12.5 degrees Celsius -- 6.8 degrees below normal -- at the Safdarjung observatory.
Hissar in Haryana recorded 12 degrees Celsius, which was 6.8 degrees below normal for the season, while Patiala in Punjab clocked 10.5 degrees Celsius, a departure of 8.1 degrees from normal.
Kota in Rajasthan shivered at 14.1 degrees Celsius, which was 8 notches below normal for the season, Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh recorded a maximum of 16.7 degrees Celsius which was 7.3 degrees below normal.
The minimum and maximum temperatures are likely to rise by 2-4 degrees Sunday onwards under the influence of warm and moist southwesterly winds, the weather office said.
Parts of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, southern Haryana and southern Uttar Pradesh are expected to get light to very light rainfall early next week.
The weather department has also forecast dense to very dense fog in some parts of Punjab, Haryana, and north Rajasthan.
At least 26 Delhi-bound trains were delayed on Thursday due to low visibility conditions.
Flight operations too were impacted with Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar forced to cancel his programme in the Jammu city as the aircraft which was ferrying him could not land at the Jammu airport.
The Vice President's aircraft was diverted to Pathankot from where he travelled by road to Jammu district's Kathua, adjoining the Punjab border, to inaugurate the Biotech Startup Expo.&nbsp;

A large storm system spouting heavy winds and possible tornados in Texas, Louisiana and Kentucky damaged homes and buildings, downed trees, left thousands without power and was blamed for the deaths of two people on Friday as it marched eastward, threatening heavy snow in the Midwest and Northeast.
After spawning likely tornadoes overnight in Texas and Louisiana that damaged a university campus, the storms threatened the Tennessee and Ohio valleys with high winds and more tornadoes as they moved toward New England, officials said.
A 70-year-old man sitting in his truck as strong winds blew through Talledega County, Alabama, was killed Friday when a tree fell onto the vehicle. Coroner Shaddix Murphy said it happened about 11.30 am as a storm system came through the area.
&ldquo;The death appears to be weather-related, with the winds we were having at the time,&rdquo; Murphy said. The victim was identified as Allen Cooley of Talledega.

In west central Mississippi, a person was killed inside a vehicle Friday after a tree, toppled by strong winds, struck the car. The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency has not identified the person but said in a news release that their death is being considered as weather-related.

Winter storm prompts cancellations of over 1,500 flights in US

A brutal winter storm has knocked out power in California, closed interstate highways from Arizona to Wyoming and prompted more than 1,500 flight cancellations &mdash; and the worst won't be over for several days.
Few places were untouched by the wild weather, some at the opposite extreme: long-standing record highs were broken in cities in the Midwest, mid-Atlantic and Southeast.
The wintry mix was hitting hard in the northern tier of the nation, closing schools, offices, even shutting down the Minnesota Legislature. Travel was difficult. Weather contributed to more than 1,500 US flight cancellations on Wednesday, according to the tracking service FlightAware. More than 400 of those were due to arrive or depart from the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. Another 5,000-plus flights were delayed across the country.
At Denver International Airport, Taylor Dotson, her husband, Reggie, and their 4-year-old daughter, Raegan, faced a two-hour flight delay to Nashville on their way home to Belvidere, Tennessee.
They'd braved slick roads and arrived early in case of long lines at airport security but the weather delay proved unavoidable &mdash; and ironic: Reggie Dotson was in Denver to interview for a job as an airline pilot.
&ldquo;I think that's kind of funny that we've experienced these types of delays when that's what he's looking into getting into now as a career,&rdquo; Taylor Dotson said.
The roads were just as bad. &ldquo;A major winter storm and multi-day closures are likely on Interstates and secondary roads throughout Wyoming!&rdquo; the state Transportation Department said on Facebook.
It wasn't much better in neighboring states.
&ldquo;Sometimes it's physically impossible to keep up with Mother Nature,&rdquo; said North Dakota Highway Patrol Sgt. Wade Kadrmas.

Kelly Cross has spent his entire 60 years in South Dakota, but even he tires of the wintry weather that often spills well into spring. Wind gusts may reach 50 mph (80 kph) in western and central Minnesota, resulting in &ldquo;significant blowing and drifting snow with whiteout conditions in open areas,&rdquo; the weather service said.
The storm will make its way toward the East Coast later this week. Places that don't get snow may get dangerous amounts of ice. Forecasters expect up to a half-inch (1.3 centimeters) of ice in parts of southern Michigan, northern Illinois and some eastern states.
The weather even prompted about 90 churches in western Michigan to cancel Ash Wednesday services, WZZM-TV reported.
The potential ice storm has power company officials on edge. Nearly 1,500 line workers are ready to be deployed if the ice causes outages, said Matt Paul, executive vice president of distribution operations for Detroit-based DTE Electric. He said a half-inch of ice could cause hundreds of thousands of outages.
A half-inch of ice covering a wire &ldquo;is the equivalent of having a baby grand piano on that single span of wire, so the weight is significant,&rdquo; Paul said.

It&rsquo;s a scene that repeats itself every year when India&rsquo;s capital experiences a harsh winter, blamed for killing scores of homeless people and leaving tens of thousands of others shivering on the streets.
Recently, New Delhi recorded a low of 5.5 degrees Celsius (41.9 Fahrenheit), with India&rsquo;s weather forecasting agency warning of a severe cold wave from Monday.
The piercing chill is an ordeal for the city&rsquo;s homeless, who curl their bodies on sidewalks and sleep as the traffic goes by. Even though the city&rsquo;s night shelters are a refuge to many who would otherwise find themselves sleeping near busy roundabouts and underpasses, most people there live in harsh conditions.
Many of the night shelters are overcrowded and have unclean toilets and no water.
India&rsquo;s 2011 census figures show about 47,000 of the city&rsquo;s residents were homeless.
Activists say that number is a vast underestimate and that New Delhi has more than 150,000 without permanent residences to sleep in.
Official figures also show the city&rsquo;s 195 homeless shelters can accommodate only about 19,000 people, leaving tens of thousands struggling to keep warm.

The cold wave hitting north India worsened on 6 January 2023 as temperature in Delhi's Ayanagar fell to as low as 1.8 degrees Celsius. The Safdarjung observatory, which is Delhi's primary weather station, recorded a minimum temperature of 4 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, the numbing cold was accompanied by dense fog in many areas. More than 25 trains were delayed, with the duration ranging from 1 to 10 hours.

As biting cold conditions engulfed entire North India, fog and poor visibility remained a severe cause of concern on Monday.
Not only in Bhatinda, visibility remained low throughout Punjab, with Amritsar recording visibility of 25 metres and Ambala 50.
Haryana too recorded low visibility. While places like Ambala and Hissar recorded a low of 25m and 50m respectively, visibility in Chandigarh was 200 metres.
According to IMD data, places like Sri Ganganagar and Churu in Rajasthan also recorded low visibility of 25 and 50 meters, respectively.
