Infosys founder Narayana Murthy stirred controversy when he said that youngsters should work 70 hour weeks, if India has to compete with economies that progressed in the last two to three decades. However, International Labour Organisation's (ILO) data updated in 2023 shows that Indians are infact among the most hard working people in the world.

According to the data, Indians on an average work 47.7 hours per week per employed person. When compared with the 10 biggest economies, Indians have the longest average work week. India ranks 7th in the global ranking following Qatar, Congo, Lesotho, Bhutan, Gambia, and the United Arab Emirates.

In fact, the data points out the inverse relation between the number of working hours and the level of productivity. The GDP Per capita of a country with shorter working hours is relatively higher than the countries with longer working hours.
Among the top 10 biggest economies in the world, India has the longest working hours and lowest per capita GDP. Meanwhile, France which has the shortest working week among the top 10 biggest economies at 30.1 hours has among the highest per capita GDP at $55,493.
<h3>'70 Hours work week' Controversy</h3>
Narayana Murthy advocated for a 70 hours work week for youngsters so that India can compete with economies that progressed in the last two to three decades. &nbsp;
&ldquo;India's work productivity is one of the lowest in the world," Murthy said while speaking to former Infosys CFO Mohandas Pai for a podcast, The Record. "So therefore, my request is that our youngsters must say, &lsquo;This is my country. I&rsquo;d like to work 70 hours a week," Murthy said, adding that this is exactly what the Germans and Japanese did after the Second World War. "They made sure that every German worked extra hours for a certain number of years."&nbsp;
While this comment received flak all over the internet, several industry leaders including JSW Group CMD Sajjan Jindal, Ola Cabs Co-Founder Bhavish Aggarwal of Ola, and Pai supported his view.

The report was shared by the U.N. International Labor Organization, the Lloyds Register Foundation and Gallup. &nbsp;
The report elaborated that while 6.3% of the surveyed employees experienced all three forms of abuse, psychological violence and harassment was faced by 17.9% of workers including men and women.&nbsp;

Let us give you an example of how this works. Suppose you wake up early at 7 am and start working at 8 itself as you have a doctor&rsquo;s appointment at 10 and have to visit the bank as well. You hand over your work to a team mate and leave and come back at about 3 pm and resume work until 7 or 8 pm. &nbsp;
The above example can however, be re-imagined according to how it would work for each individual. The basic idea behind this is to allow employees to finish their work in the time they are comfortable in, rather than forcing themselves to work during low productivity hours. It also helps them to take time out for physical activities and prepare meals. And its benefits for mental health cannot be denied.&nbsp;
Experts have found that non-linear working days provide better productivity and understanding between team mates. However, it depends on various situations in people&rsquo;s lives which can be extremely subjective.

Managers and heads on the other hand must support a work culture which is judged on the basis of quality and not the quantity of the work done by the team.&nbsp;

Deloitte&rsquo;s Gen Z and Millennial Survey connected with 14,808 Gen Zs and 8,412 millennials across 46 countries. Their responses present a picture of vivid contrasts, as these generations strive to balance their desire with the challenges of their everyday lives.&nbsp;
As per the survey, the cost of living remains the top concern among both Gen Zs and millennials. Gen Zs (29%) and millennials (36%) selected the cost of living (e.g., housing, transport, bills, etc.) as their greatest concern.
They don&rsquo;t feel financially secure personally, and at a broader societal level, they are deeply concerned about wealth inequality, the report said.
Almost half of Gen Zs (46%) and millennials (47%) live paycheck to paycheck and worry they won&rsquo;t be able to cover their expenses.&nbsp;More than a quarter of Gen Zs (26%) and millennials (31%) are not confident they will be able to retire comfortably.&nbsp;Around three-quarters of Gen Zs (72%) and millennials (77%) agree that the gap between the richest and poorest people in their country is widening.
Amid this financial unease, many Gen Zs and millennials are redefining their working patterns. As many as 43% of Gen Zs and 33% of millennials have a second part- or full-time paying job in addition to their primary job. A small, but growing, percentage are also moving to less expensive cities with remote jobs.&nbsp;
To address financial concerns, Gen Zs and millennials are actively exploring new working models to widen their income. Pay is the No. 1 reason why Gen Zs and millennials left a role in the last two years. However, good work/life balance and learning/development opportunities were the top priorities when choosing an employer.
There is also a clear demand for more flexible working. Currently, 49% of Gen Zs and 45% of millennials work remotely.&nbsp;Saving money on expenses like commuting, clothes, dry cleaning, and more is one of the top reasons that many Gen Zs and millennials prefer hybrid or remote work. A smaller percentage are taking advantage of remote work to relocate to less expensive cities. This appears to be a growing trend, roughly 15% of Gen Zs and millennials say they've done so this year, up from the 9% of respondents in last year's survey who said they'd temporarily or permanently moved out of a major city.

Research has shown that for more than two-thirds of participants, the benefits of vacation wear off in just a couple&nbsp;of days after returning to work. As we face a constant cycle of bad news on all fronts, high-personal&nbsp;stress&nbsp;levels result in angry e-mails and messages, poor collaboration and reduced&nbsp;productivity&nbsp;at work.

With&nbsp;7 in 10 employees reporting the pandemic to be the most stressful time of their entire professional career (Ginger Workforce Attitudes Report 2020),&nbsp;organisations can thrive only by learning from the models of trauma-informed organizations and trauma-informed leadership used in care professions.&nbsp;&nbsp;

According to a Duke University study, India already loses 101 billion work hours a year due to unbearable heat. This number stands to rise to about 230 billion hours a year as global warming stays on track to rise by 2 degrees Celsius.
Published in Nature Communications, the study says that countries with large populations in South and East Asia experience the most work hours lost, both in the coolest hours and in the full workday, with India showing the largest heat exposure impacts on heavy labour.

The study estimates the projected economic losses due to this lost productivity to be around $1.6 trillion (Rs 1.6 lakh crores) annually if warming continues to go up.

Assessing&nbsp;rich data on the emails, calendars, instant messages, video/audio calls and workweek&nbsp;hours&rsquo;&nbsp;of its&nbsp;own&nbsp;workers, the tech behemoth published the peer-reviewed study&nbsp;in the journal&nbsp;Nature Human&nbsp;Behaviour.&nbsp;

According to the study, people worked longer hours during the pandemic, driving up&nbsp;the average workweek inside the company by 10 per cent.&nbsp;But it may not mean people were working more, said the researchers. The increase could be due to&nbsp;the spreading out of work across the day with breaks or interruptions for non-work activities.&nbsp;&nbsp;
The study&nbsp;also&nbsp;found that formal business groups and informal communities within the company became less interconnected and more siloed. Overall, the employees added fewer new collaborators and parted away from fewer existing ones.&nbsp;
But sceptics warn that the study was conducted between&nbsp;December 2019 and June 2020, which was an early period in the outbreak. With so much uncertainty and fear in the world,&nbsp;collaboration&nbsp;wasn&rsquo;t exactly a priority&nbsp;then&nbsp;and not many had started using&nbsp;video conferencing&nbsp;tools&nbsp;like Zoom.

Work culture has significantly changed in the last year&nbsp;with&nbsp;remote work&nbsp;and communication becoming fairly systematic&nbsp;in&nbsp;many companies.&nbsp;This is why&nbsp;it's&nbsp;important to&nbsp;assess the context of the study&nbsp;before&nbsp;applying the learnings to the present day.

To prevent a &ldquo;collective breakdown&rdquo; and fight work-related stress, companies like LinkedIn and Bumble have given their working staff a paid week off, known as &ldquo;burnout breaks.&rdquo;

Stress and anxiety experienced at work can very often lead to&nbsp;extreme&nbsp;pressure, to a point that workers may begin to feel worn out, empty and exhausted.&nbsp;To tackle exhaustion and to prevent burnout, companies like LinkedIn and Bumble have taken a step towards finding a supposed solution.
In an attempt to avoid a &ldquo;collective breakdown&rdquo; and to fight work-related stress, these organisations have given their working staff a paid week off, known as a &ldquo;burnout break&rdquo;.&nbsp; This break comes as an opportunity to cut off from work and recover from the anxieties and frustration that comes with it. &nbsp;
But will burnout breaks be enough? While some feel that burnout breaks are a decent enough solution, others feel that it is a temporary fix. Because once the break has ended, everything will go back to square one and the endless cycle will begin all over again.&nbsp;
According to Fehmidah Munir, Professor of Health Psychology at Loughborough University, there is a need to come up with a more "systematic and comprehensive approach." The aim is to do away with the problems of extra workload, organise support for the ones who are suffering and also provide rehabilitation for those on long-term leave.
Companies need to look at the bigger and complete picture which includes not just policies but also a comfortable work culture that looks after the well-being of both the employers and the employees.
