The last remaining survivor of the USS Arizona bombing has died. Lou Conter was 102.

The last living survivor of the USS Arizona battleship that exploded and sank during the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor has died. Lou Conter was 102.
Conter passed away at his home Monday in Grass Valley, California following congestive heart failure, his daughter, Louann Daley said.
The Arizona lost 1,177 sailors and Marines in the 1941 attack that launched the United States into World War II. The battleship's dead account for nearly half of those killed in the surprise attack.
Conter was a quartermaster, standing on the main deck of the Arizona as Japanese planes flew overhead at 7:55 am on December 7 that year. Sailors were just beginning to hoist colours or raise the flag when the assault began.
Conter recalled how one bomb penetrated steel decks 13 minutes into the battle and set off more than 1 million pounds (450,000 kilograms) of gunpowder stored below.
The explosion lifted the battleship 30 to 40 feet (9 to 12 metres) out of the water, he said during a 2008 oral history interview stored at the Library of Congress. Everything was on fire from the mainmast forward, he said.
&ldquo;Guys were running out of the fire and trying to jump over the sides,&rdquo; Conter said. &ldquo;Oil all over the sea was burning.&rdquo; His autobiography &ldquo;The Lou Conter Story&rdquo; recounts how he joined other survivors in tending to the injured, many of them blinded and badly burned. The sailors only abandoned ship when their senior surviving officer was sure they had rescued all those still alive.
The rusting wreckage of the Arizona still lies in waters where it sank. More than 900 sailors and Marines remain entombed inside.
Conter went to flight school after Pearl Harbor, earning his wings to fly PBY patrol bombers, which the Navy used to look for submarines and bomb enemy targets. He flew 200 combat missions in the Pacific with a &ldquo;Black Cats&rdquo; squadron, which conducted dive bombing at night in planes painted black.
In 1943, he and his crew where shot down in waters near New Guinea and had to avoid a dozen sharks. A sailor expressed doubt they would survive, to which Conter replied, &ldquo;baloney&rdquo;.
&ldquo;Don't ever panic in any situation. Survive is the first thing you tell them. Don't panic or you're dead,&rdquo; he said. They were quiet and treaded water until another plane came hours later and dropped them a lifeboat.
In the late 1950s, he was made the Navy's first SERE officer &mdash; an acronym for survival, evasion, resistance and escape. He spent the next decade training Navy pilots and crew on how to survive if they're shot down in the jungle and captured as a prisoner of war. Some of his pupils used his lessons as POWs in Vietnam.
Conter retired in 1967 after 28 years in the Navy.
Conter was born in Ojibwa, Wisconsin, on Sept. 13, 1921. His family later moved to Colorado where he walked five miles (eight kilometres) one way to school outside Denver. His house didn't have running water so he tried out for the football team &mdash; less for a love of the sport and more because the players could take showers at school after practice.
He enlisted in the Navy after he turned 18, getting USD17 a month and a hammock for his bunk at boot camp.
In his later years, Conter became a fixture at annual remembrance ceremonies in Pearl Harbor that the Navy and the National Park Service jointly hosted on the anniversaries of the 1941 attack. When he lacked the strength to attend in person, he recorded video messages for those who gathered and watched remotely from his home in California.
In 2019, when he was 98, he said he liked going to remember those who lost their lives.
&ldquo;It's always good to come back and pay respect to them and give them the top honors that they deserve,&rdquo; he said.
Though many treated the shrinking group of Pearl Harbor survivors as heroes, Conter refused the label.
&ldquo;The 2,403 men that died are the heroes. And we've got to honour them ahead of everybody else. And I've said that every time, and I think it should be stressed,&rdquo; Conter told The Associated Press in a 2022 interview at his California home.

An "armed and dangerous" World War II bomb was dug up and defused Thursday on the small Pacific island of Nauru, the country's police force said.
Schools were closed and Nauru's 12,000 residents were urged to stay at home as Australian military specialists worked on the 500-pound (227-kilogram) explosive, which was first discovered almost two weeks ago.
Nauru's government declared a state of emergency across the island on Thursday morning, evacuating all houses within two kilometres (1.2 miles) of the bomb.
Police later said the device had been "disarmed and moved to a safe location for disposal".
A team of Australian bomb disposal experts were dispatched to Nauru to help, digging deep trenches and filling hulking containers with sand to absorb any explosion.
"The item is extremely dangerous so our key concern has been the safety of the people of Nauru as well as the vital infrastructure that supplies water and power that is in the immediate vicinity," Australian Lieutenant Jordan Bell said ahead of the operation.
The island microstate is one of the world's smallest countries and lies about 4,000 kilometres (2,500 miles) northeast of Sydney.
It was occupied by Japanese troops between 1942 and 1945.
The Pacific remains littered with unexploded ordnance decades after the end of World War II -- the legacy of brutal combat between Japan and the United States.

The wreck of a World War II Japanese transport ship which was torpedoed off the Philippines, killing nearly 1,000 Australians aboard has been location by deep-sea explorers.  

The ship had split into two sections, with the bow and stern lying about 500 metres apart on the seabed, according to expedition officials.&nbsp;

Deep-sea explorers said Saturday they had located the wreck of a World War II Japanese transport ship, the Montevideo Maru, which was torpedoed off the Philippines, killing nearly 1,000 Australians aboard.
The ship -- sunk on July 1, 1942, by a US submarine unaware it was carrying prisoners of war -- was found at a depth of more than four kilometres (2.5 miles), said the maritime archaeology group Silentworld Foundation, which organised the mission with Dutch deep-sea survey firm Fugro.
The sinking of the Montevideo Maru was Australia's worst-ever maritime disaster, killing an estimated 979 Australian citizens, including at least 850 troops.
Civilians from 13 other countries were also aboard, the foundation said, bringing the total number of prisoners killed to about 1,060.
They had been captured a few months earlier by Japanese forces in the fall of the coastal township of Rabaul in Papua New Guinea.
"At long last, the resting place of the lost souls of the Montevideo Maru has been found," Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said.
"Among the 1,060 prisoners on board were 850 Australian service members &ndash;- their lives cut short," he said on social media.
"We hope today's news brings a measure of comfort to loved ones who have kept a long vigil."
After five years of planning, explorers began searching for the wreck on April 6 in the South China Sea, northwest of the Philippines' main island of Luzon.
They made a positive sighting just 12 days later using high-tech equipment, including an autonomous underwater vehicle equipped with sonar.
"When we saw those images it was the moment of a lifetime, very exciting," Captain Roger Turner, technical director of the expedition, told AFP by phone from aboard the Fugro Equator survey vessel.
The ship had split into two sections, with the bow and stern lying about 500 metres apart on the seabed, he said.
"We think that she was struck by two torpedoes. The first one was what caused her to sink, the second one actually blew off a part of the accommodation."
The wreckage will remain undisturbed on the sea floor, where it lies at a greater depth than the Titanic, out of respect for the families of those who perished, the foundation said. No artefacts or human remains are to be removed.
"We're very conscious that it is a grave, it is a war grave for some 1,100 people -- both our Allied military and civilians but also the Japanese crew and guards," Turner said.
"It is being treated with appropriate respect."
Andrea Williams, an Australian whose grandfather and great-uncle were civilian internees who perished on the ship, was also with the team that found it.
"It was very emotional but it is also a very proud moment to have been able to find the wreck," she told AFP.
"The relatives have often said: 'Will the Montevideo Maru ever be found?'," Williams said.
Locating the vessel was "hugely comforting" to the perished prisoners' relatives, many of whom had contacted her after the news broke, she said.
Australia's Chief of Army Lieutenant General Simon Stuart said finding the wreck had ended 81 years of uncertainty for the loved ones of those lost.
"A loss like this reaches down through the decades and reminds us all of the human cost of conflict," he said. Australia's military had assisted in the search.
Those who perished aboard the Montevideo Maru included 33 crew from the Norwegian freighter the Herstein and about 20 Japanese guards and crew, the Silentworld Foundation said.
Other nations affected by the sinking included Britain, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Solomon Islands, Sweden and the United States, it said.

The bomb used in Nagasaki was more powerful in the one used in Hiroshima but since it was dropped in a valley, the surrounding mountains shielded large parts of the city.&nbsp;

The first atomic bomb was dropped on the western city of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 by the US bomber Enola Gay killing around 140,000 people in Hiroshima and left many more deeply traumatised and even stigmatised.
A second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945, killing another 74,000 people.

The bombs &ndash;
The first atomic bomb was dropped on the western city of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 by the US bomber Enola Gay. The bomb was nicknamed "Little Boy" but its impact was anything but small.
It detonated about 600 metres from the ground, with a force equivalent to 15,000 tonnes of TNT, and killed 140,000 people. Tens of thousands died instantly, while others succumbed to injuries or illness in the weeks, months and years that followed.
Three days later the US dropped a second bomb, dubbed "Fat Man", on the city of Nagasaki, killing another 74,000 people.
The bomb used in Nagasaki was more powerful than the one used in Hiroshima but since it was dropped in a valley, the surrounding mountains shielded large parts of the city.&nbsp;
&lsquo;Fat Man&rsquo;, as the Nagasaki bomb was nicknamed, weighed 10,000 pounds with a diameter of 60 inches.&nbsp;
With plutonium at its core, the bomb has several detonators placed outside its inner casing which produce a powerful inward pressure leading to an explosion.&nbsp;
The Fat Man produced 21 kilotons of energy when it exploded, leading to complete destruction of everything in the radius of 1.6 kms in Nagasaki.&nbsp;
The bomb was dropped by Bock&rsquo;s Car, &nbsp;a US B-29 bomber and was piloted by US Army Air Force Major Charles Sweeney.
Robert Serber, one of the scientist who helped developed the bomb, named it Fat Man after one of the characters in a novel and a film called &lsquo;The Maltese Falcon&rsquo; as the bomb was supposed to be round and fat.&nbsp;
A US govt atomic facility which developed and tested nuclear bombs during World World II even suggests that according to a common lore, the bomb was named Fat Man after British PM Winston Churchill.&nbsp;
The second atomic bombing was first scheduled for August 11 but it was moved to August 9 due to weather concerns.
Ironically, Nagasaki was never the primary target of the second mission. It was Kokura. But a faulty fuel pump and a cloud cover forced US pilots to move towards their secondary target Nagasaki.&nbsp;

That puts it 426 meters (1,400 feet) deeper than the USS Johnson, the previous deepest wreck discovered last year in the Philippine Sea also by American explorer Victor Vescovo, founder of Dallas-based Caladan Oceanic Expeditions. He announced the latest find together with U.K.-based EYOS Expeditions.
The Sammy B. took part in the Battle off Samar, the final phase of the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October 1944, in which the Imperial Japanese Navy suffered its biggest loss of ships and failed to dislodge the U.S. forces from Leyte, which they invaded earlier as part of the liberation of the Philippines.
According to some records, the destroyer disabled a Japanese heavy cruiser with a torpedo and significantly damaged another.
After having spent virtually all its ammunition, she was critically hit by the lead battleship Yamato and sank, killing 89.

U.S. military pilot Gail S. Halvorsen — known as the "Candy Bomber" for his candy airdrops during the Berlin airlift after World War II ended — has died at age 101.
Halvorsen died Wednesday following a brief illness in his home state of Utah, surrounded by most of his children,  James Stewart, the director of the Gail S. Halvorsen Aviation Education Foundation, said Thursday.
Halvorsen was beloved and venerated in Berlin, which he last visited in 2019 when the city celebrated the 70th anniversary of the day the Soviets lifted their post-War World II blockade cutting off supplies to West Berlin with a big party at the former Tempelhof airport in the German capital.
After the United States entered World War II following the attack on Pearl Harbor, Halvorsen trained as a fighter pilot and served as a transport pilot in the south Atlantic during World War II before flying food and other supplies to West Berlin as part of the airlift.
According to his account on the foundation's website, Halvorsen had mixed feelings about the mission to help the United States' former enemy after losing friends during the war.
But his attitude changed, and his new mission was launched, after meeting a group of children behind a fence at Templehof airport.
He offered them the two pieces of gum that he had, broken in half, and was touched to see those who got the gum sharing pieces of the wrapper with the other children, who smelled the paper. He promised to drop enough for all of them the following day as he flew, wiggling the wings of his plane as he flew over the airport, Halvorsen recalled.
He started doing so regularly, using his own candy ration, with handkerchiefs as parachutes to carry them to the ground. Soon other pilots and crews joined in what would be dubbed "Operation Little Vittles."
After an Associated Press story appeared under the headline "Lollipop Bomber Flies Over Berlin," a wave of candy and handkerchief donations, followed.
The airlift began on June 26, 1948, in an ambitious plan to feed and supply West Berlin after the Soviets — one of the four occupying powers of a divided Berlin after World War II — blockaded the city in an attempt to squeeze the U.S., Britain and France out of the enclave within Soviet-occupied eastern Germany.
Allied pilots flew 278,000 flights to Berlin, carrying about 2.3 million tons of food, coal, medicine and other supplies.
Finally, on May 12, 1949, the Soviets realized the blockade was futile and lifted their barricades. The airlift continued for several more months, however, as a precaution in case the Soviets changed their minds.
Memories in Germany of American soldiers handing out candy, chewing gum or fresh oranges are still omnipresent — especially for the older generation born during or right after the war.
Many fondly remember eating their first candy and fresh fruit during an era when people in bombed-out cities were starving or selling their family heirlooms on the black market for small amounts of of flour, butter or oil just so they could get by.
Halvorsen's efforts to reach out to the people of Berlin helped send a message that they were not forgotten and would not be abandoned, Stewart said.
Despite his initial ambivalence about the airlift, Halvorsen, who grew up poor during the Great Depression, recognized a bit of himself in the children behind the fence and made a connection with them, he said.

Halvorsen died Wednesday following a brief illness in his home state of Utah, surrounded by most of his children,&nbsp;&nbsp;James Stewart, the director of the Gail S. Halvorsen Aviation Education Foundation, said Thursday.
Halvorsen was beloved and venerated in Berlin, which he last visited in 2019 when the city celebrated the 70th anniversary of the day the Soviets lifted their post-War World II blockade cutting off supplies to West Berlin with a big party at the former Tempelhof airport in the German capital.
After the United States entered World War II following the attack on Pearl Harbor, Halvorsen trained as a fighter pilot and served as a transport pilot in the south Atlantic during World War II before flying food and other supplies to West Berlin as part of the airlift.
According to his account on the foundation's website, Halvorsen had mixed feelings about the mission to help the United States' former enemy after losing friends during the war.
But his attitude changed, and his new mission was launched, after meeting a group of children behind a fence at Templehof airport.
He offered them the two pieces of gum that he had, broken in half, and was touched to see those who got the gum sharing pieces of the wrapper with the other children, who smelled the paper. He promised to drop enough for all of them the following day as he flew, wiggling the wings of his plane as he flew over the airport, Halvorsen recalled.
He started doing so regularly, using his own candy ration, with handkerchiefs as parachutes to carry them to the ground. Soon other pilots and crews joined in what would be dubbed "Operation Little Vittles."
After an Associated Press story appeared under the headline "Lollipop Bomber Flies Over Berlin," a wave of candy and handkerchief donations, followed.
The airlift began on June 26, 1948, in an ambitious plan to feed and supply West Berlin after the Soviets &mdash; one of the four occupying powers of a divided Berlin after World War II &mdash; blockaded the city in an attempt to squeeze the U.S., Britain and France out of the enclave within Soviet-occupied eastern Germany.
Allied pilots flew 278,000 flights to Berlin, carrying about 2.3 million tons of food, coal, medicine and other supplies.
Finally, on May 12, 1949, the Soviets realized the blockade was futile and lifted their barricades. The airlift continued for several more months, however, as a precaution in case the Soviets changed their minds.
Memories in Germany of American soldiers handing out candy, chewing gum or fresh oranges are still omnipresent &mdash; especially for the older generation born during or right after the war.
Many fondly remember eating their first candy and fresh fruit during an era when people in bombed-out cities were starving or selling their family heirlooms on the black market for small amounts of of flour, butter or oil just so they could get by.
Halvorsen's efforts to reach out to the people of Berlin helped send a message that they were not forgotten and would not be abandoned, Stewart said.
Despite his initial ambivalence about the airlift, Halvorsen, who grew up poor during the Great Depression, recognized a bit of himself in the children behind the fence and made a connection with them, he said.

He also said that China is ready to manage all issues through dialogue with India.
Wang, who is currently on a tour of Europe, made the remarks during an interaction at the French Institute of International Relations in Paris on Monday.
In response to a question on China's relations with India and Japan, the minister did not directly refer to the latest provocative move by the Chinese military in eastern Ladakh.
His remarks came hours after the Indian Army said it has thwarted a provocative Chinese army movement in eastern Ladakh to "unilaterally" change the status quo on the southern bank of Pangong lake. It is also the first major incident in the area after the Galwan Valley clashes on June 15 in which 20 Indian Army personnel were killed.
"China-India relations have recently attracted the attention of all parties," Wang said.
&ldquo;The boundary between China and India has not yet been demarcated, so there will always be problems of this kind. We are ready to manage all kinds of issues through dialogue with the Indian side&rdquo;, he said.
At the same time, these issues should be placed in their proper place in bilateral relations, he said, adding that President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi met many times and reached many important consensus.
&ldquo;For example, instead of "the dragon and the elephant compete with each other", "the dragon and the elephant dance together", "1 plus 1 is not 2, but 11" and so on.&nbsp;These are all philosophical views,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;For example, the leaders of the two countries agreed that bilateral cooperation outweighs differences and common interests outweigh conflicts.
"Differences should be managed and controlled, and in particular, differences should not escalate into conflicts.&nbsp;I think that various departments of the two countries should implement these important consensuses,&rdquo; Wang said.
India and China have held several rounds of military and diplomatic talks in the last two-and-half months but no significant headway has been made for a resolution to the border row in eastern Ladakh.
The foreign minister said China has a long history and more neighbours than any other country in the world.
&ldquo;The long history of exchanges have always left problems of one kind or another.&nbsp;We are ready to work with our neighbours to resolve issues left over from history through friendly consultation in the spirit of building friendship and partnership with them,&rdquo; he said.
Both China and India are great eastern countries with long civilisations, he said adding that&nbsp;the two countries live close to each other and are highly complementary to each other.
China is ready to strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation with India to help India speed up its own development, he said.
China and India are also major developing countries and emerging economies. "We should jointly safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of developing countries on the international stage and create a broader space for the development of emerging economies,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;If both China and India can develop, it will be 2.7 billion people moving towards modernisation, a spectacle never before seen in the course of human progress. I hope India can see and deal with problems from this perspective,&rdquo; he said.
About China-Japan ties, Wang said this year marks the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II, and is a year of reflection.
