The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) is gearing up for the senior National camp after almost 15 months with Delhi likely to replace Patiala as the venue because of the ongoing farmers' protest.
The WFI-organised National camps are on hold since January 2023 when the country's three elite wrestlers accused then WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh of sexual harassment, a controversy that pegged back Indian wrestling.
The ad-hoc panel, which was entrusted with managing the day-to-day affairs due to the suspension of the WFI, had started the training camp for men (Rohtak) and women (Patiala) after conducting its own Nationals in Jaipur.
The WFI, after United World Wrestling (UWW) lifted its suspension, announced the trials to select the nationals teams for the Asian Wrestling Championships in Bishkek (April 11-16) and the Continental Olympic Qualifier in the Kyrgyzstan capital (April 19-21).
"After we conduct these trials, the top-four in each category will be invited to be part of the National camp," WFI president Sanjay Singh told PTI.
"We have not yet finalised the venues for the camps," the sports administrator from Varanasi, added.
It has been learnt that the SAI centres in Sonepat will, as usual, be the venue for the men's camp and Delhi's IG Stadium could host the women's camp.
"The Lucknow SAI centre is out of question and we have to choose between Patiala and Delhi. As of today, the restriction on movement in and around of Punjab will make it a bit inconvenient for everyone to reach Patiala. So, probably, we can request the government to provide the IG Stadium for the women's camp," said a WFI source.

The selection trials for picking the Indian wrestling team for the upcoming Olympic Qualifiers and Asian Championships will be held on March 10-11 in Patiala and Sonipat respectively, the ad-hoc committee managing the sport said on Friday.
The trials were initially planned for February 27-29 but got postponed after a delay in hosting the senior national championships due to "unavoidable circumstances".
The trials for women wrestlers will be held at NSNIS Patiala, while the trials for greco roman and freestyle grapplers will be held at SAI Sonipat.
"The ad-hoc committee will be organizing the selection trials for selecting the Indian wrestling team for the upcoming Olympic Qualifiers &amp; Asian Championships on March 10-11, 2024," the ad-hoc committee, headed by Bhupender Singh Bhajwa, said in a statement.
"Earlier the trials were announced to be held on 27-29 February 2024. However, because of a delay in organizing the 2023 Senior National Championships due to unavoidable circumstances, the trials are being postponed," the panel added.
The winner of the trials in the Olympic weight category will get to represent India in the upcoming Olympic qualifiers -- the Asian Olympic Qualifiers (April 19-21) and World Olympic Qualifiers (May 9-12).
While the winner in non-Olympic weight categories will represent India in Senior Asian Championships (April 11-16), the runners-up in Olympic weight categories at the trials will represent India at the Senior Asian Championships.
Antim (53kg) will be given direct entry to play at the 2024 Senior Asian Championships. India has so far secured Olympic quota in 53kg women's wrestling category by virtue of Antim's bronze medal at the 2023 Senior World championships.
Indian wrestlers can still grab 17 quotas (5 in women wrestling, 6 in greco roman and 6 in freestyle).
The ad-hoc committee was formed by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) after the Sports Ministry suspended the Sanjay Singh-led Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) for violating its own constitution soon after the body's victory in the elections last December.
Sanjay Singh is a close associate of former WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who was accused of sexual harassment by the famous wrestling trio of Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia.&nbsp;

Wrestling Nationals in Jaipur from February 2-5, says WFI ad-hoc panel

The senior national championships for wrestling will be held from February 2 to 5 in Jaipur, the ad-hoc committee governing the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) said on Saturday.

The release also stated that "all correspondence should be done with ad-hoc panel", making it clear that no stakeholder should be in touch with members of the suspended federation.

Competitions will be held for top honours in senior free style, Greco Roman and the women's section, the Bhupinder Singh Bajwa-led committee said in a press release.

The tournament will be organised by Railway Sports Promotion Board (RSPB) at Railway Stadium in Ganpati Nagar.
Earlier, a three-member ad-hoc committee was formed by the Indian Olympic Association to oversee the WFI after the newly-elected body was suspended by the sports ministry for violating its own constitution.
Last Sunday, the wrestling body was suspended for not making decisions in accordance with the provisions of its constitution.
In order to manage the day-to-day operations of the WFI, the IOA designated Wushu federation chief Bajwa as the committee's head. The other members of the panel are 1998 Commonwealth Games badminton medallist Manjusha Kanwar and 1980 Olympic gold medallist hockey player MM Somaya.
After Sanjay Singh, a close aide of former WFI boss Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, was elected as the president of the national wrestling body on December 24, he declared that the nationals for the Under-15 and Under-20 age groups would be held in the Nandini Nagar region of the Gonda district of Uttar Pradesh before the year ended.
The region is a stronghold of BJP MP Brij Bhushan.
The ministry claimed that the wrestlers who were going to compete in the national championships were not given enough notice and that the announcement was made in a hurry and without taking into confidence secretary general Prem Chand Lochab.

Antim Panghal shocked reigning champion Olivia Dominique Parrish en route to the World Championship semifinals, but the young grappler's giant-killing run was halted in the last-four stage, leaving her fighting for a bronze medal and a Paris Olympic quota place.
Panghal, the 53kg grappler, lost the semifinal bout to world No.23 Vanesa Kaladzinskaya -- a Belarusian competing as a neutral athlete -- on technical points 5-4.
But the Indian can still earn an Olympic quota if she wins the bronze-medal match or emerges triumphant in the bout between the losers of the bronze-medal contest.
Underlining her growth and a smooth transition from the junior to the senior circuit, the two-time U20 champion won the first three bouts of the day to enter the semifinal even as other Indian contenders bit the dust in their respective categories.
The two-time U20 champion Panghal slipped to a 0-2 deficit at the start of the bout against USA's Parrish but edged her rival 3-2 in the opening round.
She later outplayed Poland's Roksana Marta Zasina by technical superiority and followed it up with a 9-6 win over Russian Natalia Malysheva, who is competing as a neutral athlete.
Earlier, American Parrish swung into action with a quick take-down move from a right-leg attack. Unperturbed, the 19-year-old Indian began to defend well and foiled two similar attempts, not conceding any more points till the end of the first period.
With her strong defense continuing, Panghal did not let Parrish make any attacking move and as a result, the American was put on the clock.
Panghal got hold of the American's left leg and converted that into a successful take-down move to draw parity. She tried to get a leg lace but could not pull off the move.
The American lost a point on passivity. Standing wrestling followed and Panghal defended her slender lead to walk out a winner.
She needed only one minute and 38 seconds to outplay Zasina in her next bout, beating the Poland wrestler by technical superiority to move into the quarterfinals.
After two take-down moves, Panghal pulled off leg-lace move with perfection to finish the bout in a jiffy.
In the quarterfinal, she led 6-0 but Natalia from Russia effected a comeback with a take-down and consecutive gut-wrench points to make it 6-6.
On the counter-attack, Panghal took the lead again. The Indian extended the lead with a left-leg attack which she converted into a take-down. After that, about 30 seconds were still left in the bout but Paghal denied her rival.
However, Manisha (62kg), Priyanka (68kg) and Jyoti Berwal (72kg) have lost their bouts and exited the tournament.
All 10 men's freestyle wrestlers have already exited the tournament without winning either an Olympic quota or a medal in non-Olympic categories.
All Indian athletes are competing under the UWW flag because the wrestling federation is suspended.&nbsp;

Dozens of spectators watched wrestlers Minoru Suzuki and Sanshiro Takagi fight inside the Nozomi Shinkansen as the train rode them from Tokyo to Nagoya with speed running up to 285 kilometers per hour.
The event organizer rented out the whole carriage, with tickets for 75 seats selling out within 30 minutes after release. Fighters were not allowed to destroy any part of the train interior.
Suzuki won the battle after about 30 minutes.

'The boy in the video is from Haryana and the girl is from Himachal Pradesh. And they are in a relationship. The police have recorded their statements and posted them on social media. The boy who used my name has been arrested. And he has admitted his crime too," added Anshu.
'People are making dirty comments on me because of the video, but not questioning the people who made the video. Did they ever think how my parents and I would feel? We have been going through a mental trauma. People who did not know the truth put the blame on me and made me a culprit in society.'
'People are hurling abuses at my medals and awards that I have won with a lot of hard work and dedication. I always dreamt of making the nation proud. My parents have quit their jobs to fulfil my dream. But people have forgotten all these and are sending me dirty and abusive messages without knowing the reality,' Anshu concluded.

The Indian Olympic Association's ad-hoc panel has reportedly received an unofficial assurance from the Olympic Council of Asia regarding the extension of the deadline for sending entries for the Asian Games. 


While OCA had set July 15 as the deadline for sending entries by name to the Asian Games organisers but following efforts made by the panel for wrestling, the OCA is reportedly contemplating extending the deadline.

The trials to short-list the wrestlers for the Asian Games will likely take place around July 20 after an "unofficial" assurance was given by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) with regard to extending the deadline for sending entries by names to the organisers of the quadrennial extravaganza.
The OCA has set July 15 as the deadline for sending entries by name to the Asian Games organisers but following efforts made by the Indian Olympic Association's ad-hoc committee for wrestling, the OCA is reportedly contemplating extending the deadline.
But assurances apart, the duration of relaxation has so far not been shared with the ad-hoc panel.
Gian Singh, a member of the ad-hoc panel, told PTI, "There is so far no mail from the OCA (regarding granting extension) but unofficially they have said that they are willing to relax the dates for sending entries by name. But they have not confirmed the duration of the relaxation. Until we get a confirmation, we cannot say whether they will extend it by 10, 12, 15 days or more.
"However, without delaying the process any further, we will announce the dates for the Asian Games trials by Monday (July 10) and they will likely be held around July 20," he said.
The IOA had requested the OCA to extend the deadline to send entries to the Games organisers to August 10 so that it could provide the protesting wrestlers enough time to be ready.
Six wrestlers, including Olympic medallists Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Asian Games gold medallist Vinesh Phogat, among others, had requested the sports ministry to grant them additional time to prepare for Asian Games trials.
They had contended that they are not in good physical shape to appear in trials due to their 38-day long protest against outgoing Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
The ad-hoc panel, on its part, had exempted them from Asian Games and World Championships trials and made it a one-bout affair, a move that invited criticism from all quarters.
Gian said the wrestlers will be given adequate time to plan their preparation and arrival for the trials.
"We will give at least 10 days' time to the wrestlers to prepare for the trials. Grapplers will come from across the country, so we need to give them at least 10 days to prepare," he added.
He also said the ad-hoc panel was exploring the possibility of sending the names of the six wrestlers -- who took part in the protest -- for the Asian Games as reserves.
The logic behind the move is that if they win the one-off bout in August against the winner of the trials, they could be accommodated in the Indian contingent.
"We explored the possibility of sending two entries per weight category for the Games. But, apparently, that is not possible. There is, however, a provision for sending names of reserves.
"The six wrestlers who had sought more time for trials will then be included as reserves. So, we will send one confirmed entry and the names of the six grapplers who had sought more time would be put on the reserves' list. There is a provision for sending the names of three male and three female wrestlers as reserves," he added.

Apart from Rupin, 16-year-old Neeraj and Sunil Kumar, the 2020 Asian champion brought glory to India with two bronze medal wins.&nbsp;

Top Indian wrestlers including Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia have decided to give the upcoming 2nd Ranking Series Ibrahim-Moustafa tournament a miss.
It is the second time in the month that Vinesh, Bajrang, Ravi Dahiya, Deepak Punia, Anshu Malik, Sangeeta Phogat and Sangita Mor have decided to opt out of an important tournament, to be held in Alexandria, Egypt from February 23 to 26.
The event will be crucial for gaining ranking points for better seeding at the &nbsp;2023 Asian Championships and the 2023 World Championships. The top grapplers had earlier pulled out of the Zagreb Open, saying they are not ready for the competition.
The Mary Kom-headed oversight committee managing the WFI affairs cleared a contingent of 27 Indian wrestlers for the upcoming tournament.

Tokyo Olympics Bronze medallist Bajrang Punia issued an ultimatum to the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) during the protest at Jantar Mantar, calling for the removal of president Brijbhushan Sharan Singh.

Bajrang said the federation is being run in an arbitrary manner and they will not compete in any international competition unless the WFI President, who is no less than a "dictator", is removed.

"Our fight is not against the government or the Sports Authority of India (SAI). This is against WFI. 'Yeh ab aar paar ki ladai hai' (It's a fight to the finish). We will continue this protest until WFI President is removed," Bajrang said.
"We will not compete in any international competition until the WFI President is removed. This is a fight to save Indian wrestling. While we are denied help and support of foreign coaches, the WFI President has hired a foreign coach for his own academy in Gonda," he later said while addressing the media.
"He uses abusive language against wrestlers, we can even show you videos of that," Punia added.
In December 2021, the WFI President had slapped an over-age wrestler during the under-15 national championship when he insisted on competing after being disqualified.

 "I know at least 10-20 women wrestlers who have told me about the sexual exploitation they faced at the hands of (the) WFI President. They told me their stories. I can't take their names now but I can definitely reveal the names if we get to meet the Prime Minister and the Home Minister of the country," Vinesh said addressing the media after staging a four-hour 'dharna' at Jantar Mantar.
"I have received death threats from people who are close to the WFI President. If anything happens to any of us sitting here, only the WFI President will be responsible," she added.
Rio Olympic medallist Sakshi Malik, world championship medallist Sarita Mor, Sangeeta Phogat, Anshu Malik, Sonam Malik, Satyawart Malik, Jitender Kinha, Amit Dhankar and CWG medallist Sumit Malik were among 30 wrestlers who assembled at the famous protest site.
