The actor on November 21 posted a video saying that tourists were pelting stones at tiger enclosures&nbsp; and that there was lack of animal safety at the zoo.

Authorities at the Van Vihar National Park here have started an investigation after Bollywood actor Raveena Tandon shared a video and claimed that some miscreants were throwing stones at a tiger enclosure.
The park is located on the banks of Bhopal's Upper Lake.
&ldquo;Van Vihar, Bhopal. Madhya Pradesh. Tourists (ruffians) pelting stones at the tiger in closures. Having a good laugh when told not to do so. Screaming, laughing, shaking the cage- throwing rocks. No security for the tiger. humiliation they are subjected to,&rdquo; Tandon tweeted on Monday.
In reply, the park management said it was already investigating the incident. Such acts are punishable under the Wildlife Protection Act, it added.
In another tweet, the park management said, &ldquo;Van Vihar National Park follows Zero Tolerance policy against any kind of action which can lead to physical harm to animals. We urge the public to refrain from indulging any such Activities which are punishable under Wildlife Protection Act.&rdquo; The park's director Padma Priya Balakrishnan told PTI that the video shared by Tandon did not show anyone actually throwing stones, but someone is heard shouting from behind &ldquo;why are you throwing stones?&rdquo; "Two men seen in the video were misbehaving, shouting and ringing the bell (of a bicycle). We have put up their pictures at the park's gates and banned their entry," she added.
A case has been registered against them and further action will be taken after they are identified, the official said.
&ldquo;Besides, we are also seeking an explanation from our staff for their carelessness in keeping a watch," Balakrishnan said, adding that CCTV cameras are being installed across the park to prevent such incidents.

New York's top court on Tuesday rejected an effort to free Happy the elephant from the Bronx Zoo, ruling in a closely watched case that she does not meet the definition of a "person" who is being illegally confined.

US court rules: Happy- the elephant is not a 'person'

The Bronx Zoo argued Happy is neither illegally imprisoned nor a person, but a well-cared-for elephant "respected as the magnificent creature she is."

New York's top court on Tuesday rejected an effort to free Happy the elephant from the Bronx Zoo, ruling in a closely watched case that she does not meet the definition of a "person" who is being illegally confined.
The 5-2 decision by the state Court of Appeals affirms an earlier court decision and means Happy will not be released through a habeas corpus proceeding, which is a way for people to challenge illegal confinement.
The majority decision written by Chief Judge Janet DiFiore said that "while no one disputes that elephants are intelligent beings deserving of proper care and compassion," a writ of habeas corpus is intended to protect the liberty of human beings and does not apply to a nonhuman animal like Happy.
The zoo and its supporters warned that a win for advocates at the Nonhuman Rights Project could open the door to more legal actions on behalf of animals, including pets and other species in zoos.
The court's majority echoed that point.
"A determination that Happy, an elephant, may invoke habeas corpus to challenge her confinement at the Bronx Zoo &mdash; a confinement both authorized and, by all indications, compliant with state and federal statutory law and regulations &mdash; would have an enormous destabilizing impact on modern society," read the majority decision. "It is not this Court's role to make such a determination."
The Bronx Zoo argued Happy is neither illegally imprisoned nor a person, but a well-cared-for elephant "respected as the magnificent creature she is."
The advocates at the Nonhuman Rights Project argued that Happy is an autonomous, cognitively complex elephant worthy of the right reserved in law for "a person."
Two judges, Rowan Wilson and Jenny Rivera, wrote separate, sharply worded dissents saying the fact that Happy is an animal does not prevent her from having legal rights. Rivera wrote that Happy is being held in "an environment that is unnatural to her and that does not allow her to live her life."
"Her captivity is inherently unjust and inhumane. It is an affront to a civilized society, and every day she remains a captive &mdash; a spectacle for humans &mdash; we, too, are diminished," Rivera wrote.
Happy was born in the wild in Asia in the early 1970s, captured and brought as a 1-year-old to the United States. Happy arrived at the Bronx Zoo in 1977 with fellow elephant Grumpy, who was fatally injured in a 2002 confrontation with two other elephants.
The ruling from New York's highest court cannot be appealed. The Nonhuman Rights Project has failed to prevail in similar cases, including those involving a chimpanzee in upstate New York named Tommy.

Online animal adoptions to help Odisha's Nandankanan zoo sustain

In a bid to tackle financial stress and cater to its expenses, Odisha's&nbsp;Nandankanan&nbsp;Zoo has started an online 'Adopt an Animal' program.

Like many other tourist hotspots&nbsp;that rely on visitors to generate a revenue, Odisha's Nandankanan Zoo in Bhubaneswar faced a major blow amid the Covid-19 induced lockdown.
To cater to its expenses, necessary&nbsp;for animal care, the zoo has started an online animal adoption program. Those interested may adopt an animal of their choice virtually for a specific duration of time and the money contributed will go towards the food, grooming and medical expenses of the animal.

A rare, golden-bellied Mangabey has been born at the Budapest Zoo. The newborn monkey's gender has not been revealed yet. There are only 27 golden-bellied mangabeys in 12 zoos across the world. The ancestors of the infant's father are from zoos in the United States while those of the mother are from European zoos. The baby will thus contribute to the preservation of genetic diversity.
