After 3 days of violence, ceasefire between Israel, Palestine's Islamic Jihad; USA welcomes move

After three days of violence, Israeli forces and Palestinian fighters agreed to a ceasefire on 7 August. Egypt brokered the ceasefire after the violence left dozens of Palestinians dead and disrupted the lives of thousands of Israelis.

Tension remained as Israel warned of a "strong response" if the truce was violated. America welcomed the ceasefire with US President Joe Biden saying that the country worked with others in the region to "encourage a swift resolution to the conflict".

Over 3 days, Israeli airstrikes pummelled what the government said were sites linked to Palestine's Islamic Jihad group. In turn, Islamic Jihad fighters fired rockets at Israel.

On 6 August, the second Islamic Jihad commander, Khaled Mansour, was killed in an airstrike on an apartment building in the Rafah refugee camp in southern Gaza. Five civilians also died. Israel says around 15 Palestinian fighters were eliminated in the airstrikes.

This was the worst bout of violence since the 11-day war between Israel and Hamas in 2021.
