Attack on presidential palace, Supreme Court, Congress buildings by Bolsonaro's supporters in Brazil

Two years after riots in USA's Capitol Hill, Brazil witnessed similar scenes of violence and chaos on 8 January 2023 as supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro invaded buildings of the presidential palace, the Congress, and the Supreme Court.

Thousands of supporters of Bolsonaro, who refuse to believe the results of the recent elections in which he lost, crossed security barriers, climbed on roofs, smashed windows, and caused other mayhem.

Within a few hours, police had reportedly retaken the Supreme Court and Congress buildings.

The attack came a week after Bolsonaro's successor Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was inaugurated as President.

In a news conference from Sao Paulo state, Lula said Bolsonaro had encouraged the uprising by those he termed “fascist fanatics,” and he read a freshly signed decree for the federal government to take control of security in the federal district.

“There is no precedent for what they did and these people need to be punished,” Lula said.
