Canada: Sikh student from India beaten up in alleged hate crime

In a shocking case of alleged hate crime in Canada, a 21-year-old Sikh student from India was beaten up and dragged across the sidewalk by his hair.

Gagandeep Singh was assaulted in Canada's British Columbia province on 17 March 2023, as per reports. The unidentified assailants allegedly ripped off his turban and dragged him by his hair.

The victim was heading home around 10:30 pm after grocery shopping, when a group of 12-15 persons allegedly harassed him on a bus, before thrashing him and leaving him unconscious at the side of the road.

Councillor Mohini Singh said she heard of the attack shortly after it happened and went to visit Gagandeep. "I was horrified when I saw him. He could only speak in soft tones and he couldn't open his mouth,"' she said to a news channel. She said the young man's eyes were swollen shut and that he was obviously in significant pain.
