China's Covid lockdown in Chengdu after quake and heatwaves puts locals on edge

Anger is brewing in the Chinese city of Chengdu where a coronavirus lockdown remains in place since September 1.

Videos emerging from the south-western Chinese city show locals dashing to local markets to grab hold of essentials just before the stringent lockdown was implemented.

While the lockdown is forcefully imposed, The Guardian reported that the 21 million residents of Chengdu have been battling heat waves, power cuts and a deadly magnitude-6.8 earthquake that killed 65 in the surrounding region.

Locals told The Guardian that they had been stranded for over 10 days since the lockdown was implemented without warning, amid fears of food shortage.

About 65 million people in 33 cities across China have been placed under partial or full lockdowns as authorities double down on stamping out coronavirus outbreaks ahead of the Chinese Communist party’s 20th congress in mid-October.
