Death toll reaches 26 after torrential rains triggers floods, landslides in Indonesia

The death toll in Indonesia's Sumatra has reached 26 after torrential rains triggered flash floods and landslides on Sunday.

The officials said that 11 more people are still missing and warned the death toll may increase. More bodies were recovered by the rescuers as the water level started decreasing.

The flooding has submerged nine districts and cities in West Sumatra province.

The torrential rains drove tons of mud and debris as uprooted trees rolled down a mountain late Friday. A river overflowed its banks and tore through mountainside villages in Pesisir Selatan district of West Sumatra province, said Doni Yusrizal, who heads the local disaster management agency.

The officials said the landslides buried at least 14 houses. They said more than 80,000 people had fled to temporary government shelters after the flood and landslide. About 20,000 houses were flooded up to the roof in nine districts and cities in West Sumatra province.
