Does Hawaii's Mauna Loa volcanic eruption pose any hazards?

A look at the hazards posed by Hawaii’s Mauna Loa eruption.

The volcano is spewing volcanic gases, which combine with vapour, oxygen and dust in sunlight to form volcanic smog. Vog can have negative health impacts, damage crops and create acid rain.

Molten rock or lava could cover houses, farms or neighbourhoods, depending on where it flows.

When hot lava erupts from a fissure and rapidly cools, it forms glass particles named Pele's hair. The glass bits as short as a few millimetres or as long as a few inches can be sharp.

While there is currently no risk to people and property below the eruption, officials said residents should be ready to evacuate if lava flows start heading their way.
