Hong Kong orders probe after pro-democracy song was played at rugby match

Condemning the playing of a purported protest song in place of Chinese national anthem at a rugby match in South Korea, Hong Kong authorities have ordered an investigation into the incident saying it strongly opposed the violent protest song .

Though it's still not known exactly which song was played during the November 13 rugby match between Hong Kong and South Korea in Incheon, videos on social media suggest that 'Glory to Hong Kong' song which was widely used during the 2019 pro-Independence movement was played during the sporting event.

Meanwhile, the government has asked Hong Kong Rugby Union to probe the matter thoroughly seeking a detailed report.

In a further statement, authorities also said that organisers Rugby Asia issued apology for mistakenly playing the 'incorrect' song and thereafter playing the Chinese national anthem 'March of the Volunteers' as course correction.

The 'Glory to Hong Kong' song was written in 2019 opposing the implementation of an extradition bill by a group of activists. It was deemed 'risky' for public events after the government brought up national security law in 2020.
