Italian winemaker dies attempting to rescue colleague from wine vat

An Italian winemaker died while attempting to rescue a colleague who had passed out inside a wine vat.

The incident unfolded during maintenance work in a recently emptied processing tank, with both men succumbing to carbon dioxide fumes from the fermentation process.

Rescuers said the men were not equipped with safety gear at the time of the incident.

Authorities swiftly reached Ca’di Rajo winery in Italy’s San Polo di Piave, CNN reported. It is not clear who made the emergency call.

Clarifying that the other man was injured and recovering, the winery’s owner said that his “thoughts go to these two men, who grew up with us, and their families,” as per CNN.

“We are overwhelmed by pain, for us they are two brothers, two sons,” the owner added, saying that the incident was a “huge tragedy.”
