This is the 36th President of United States of America Lyndon Baines Johnson. At the end of his tenure in 1968, the Democrat who had become president after the assassination of his predecessor John F Kennedy, made the shocking announcement.

Johnson had inherited political chaos both within and outside American. This was a time when the US was embroiled in Vietnam War while facing racial unrest within.

Through his tenure, Johnson’s popularity declined and in the election year, he announced he would not seek a re-election. Troubling times were ahead.

Days after his announcement, Martin Luther King Jr. was shot dead, sparking a wave of violence in the country.

Amid rioting on streets, Hubert Humphrey was named the Democrat nominee and he lost to Republican Richard Nixon.
