Mahsa Amini died due to 'illness not beatings': Iran

Amid the ongoing protest over hijab and subsequent death of Mahsa Amini allegedly in police custody, Iran has released a medical report that cites illness, not physical abuse as her death cause.

Iran Forensic Organization's report which has been released three weeks after Amini's death stated that Amini's death was not caused by blows to the head and vital organs and limbs of the body.

Her death was related to "surgery for a brain tumour at the age of eight," the report added.

Amini's death had sparked outrage not just in Iran, but across the world as women took to streets, chopped off their hair in support of Iran women.

The 22-year-old was detained in September by the morality police, who said she didn't properly cover her hair with the mandatory Islamic headscarf, known as the hijab.

She collapsed at a police station and died three days later.

Her death set off protests in dozens of cities across the country and the government has responded with a fierce crackdown.

Authorities have detained at least 35 reporters and photographers since the demonstrations began September 17.
