More than three dozen Indians, including women and children, were allegedly being forced to work virtually as slaves in Nepal's Rautahat area. They were finally rescued by Nepalese authorities on 9 November 2022.

The victims included 20 men and 18 children and women hailing from the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. They were allegedly being made to work in terrible conditions at a brick factory in Nepal's Rautahat.

The rescue operation took place after officials were tipped about the bonded labour, and a police team was deployed to investigate. The rescued Indians were handed over to India's Sashastra Seema Bal paramilitary force at Bairganiya in Bihar's Sitamarhi district after the legal and administrative process was concluded.

Government officials reportedly said that hundreds of men and women from various districts of Uttar Pradesh work in Rautahat's brick factory despite poor conditions.
