New Australian PM's old India link; PM Modi wishes Anthony Albanese ahead of Quad summit in Tokyo

Australia has a new Prime Minister. Following the election, incumbent Scott Morrison conceded defeat, making way for Anthony Albanese of the Labour Party to take over the top office.

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Australian PM-designate.
Modi tweeted, "I look forward to working towards further strengthening our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, and for shared priorities in the Indo-Pacific region."

The Australian High Commissioner to India, said that Albanese was "no stranger to India". Barry O'Farrell said that the new Australian premier had travelled to India as a backpacker in 1991, and led a parliamentary delegation to the country in 2018.

Albanese and PM Modi will meet soon with the next Quad summit slated for May 24 in Tokyo, Japan. The Quad is seen as a counterweight to China, and Chinese military expansion in the region was one of the biggest issues in the Australian election.
