North Korea says it fired new 'hypersonic missile'

North Korea on Tuesday claimed that it successfully tested a new 'hypersonic missile' called Hwasong-8.

The State news media KCNA reported that the new missile was one of the "five most important" new weapons systems laid out in its five-year military development plan. They also referred to the new missile as a "strategic weapon", which usually means it has nuclear capabilities.

The launch is North Korea's third round of weapons firings this month. It only three days after North Korea repeated its offer for conditional talks with South Korea.

The launch from Jagang province "confirmed the navigational control and stability of the missile", along with its "guiding manoeuvrability and the gliding flight characteristics of the detached hypersonic gliding warhead" and the engine, according to KCNA.

"The test results proved that all the technical specifications met the design requirements", it added.
