Japan's former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe suffered heart failure after being shot during an election speech, as per news reports. Japanese media said that Abe was not showing vital signs after being rushed to hospital after the attack.

The former premier was apparently shot in the back with a shotgun, as per reports. Unverified videos on social media showed apparent footage of the attack.

A video showed some people standing on the street, before a large cloud of smoke emerges. People then rush to tend to Shinzo Abe lying on the ground.

Photographs showed Abe lying on the ground with blood on his shirt. Another viral image apparently showed the suspect being detained. Abe is reportedly being transferred to Nara Medical University Hospital in Kashihara City.

The attacker's motives have not been revealed yet.

At the time of the attack, Abe was making a campaign speech for elections to the parliament's Upper House scheduled on July 10.
