Pakistan's ex-PM Imran Khan, wife jailed for 7 years for 'un-Islamic ' marriage

Pakistan's former prime minister Imran Khan and his wife were sentenced to seven years in prison after the court on Saturday deemed their 2018 marriage un-Islamic and illegal.

According to local news, the couple were fined 500,000 Pakistani rupees each.

This is Khan's third prison sentence in less than a week. On January 30, he was jailed for 10 years for leaking classified documents

A court set up inside the Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, where Khan is serving his previous sentences, pronounced the verdict on Saturday for the latest case.

Imran's wife Bushra Khan was accused of not completing the waiting period mandated by Islam, called "Iddat", after divorcing her previous husband and marrying Imran Khan. The complaint was filed by Bibi's ex-husband, who said her marriage with Khan had been fraudulent.

Khan married Bushra in a secret ceremony in January 2018, seven months before the cricketer-turned-politician became the prime minister of Pakistan.

Bibi, a spiritual healer believed to be in her 40s and always seen in a veil in public, is Khan's third wife.

Saturday's ruling also comes ahead of the all-important general elections scheduled to be held on February 8 this year, which Imran Khan is barred from contesting.
