Russia's New Year's Day attack on Ukraine: watch what President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said

It was a grim and bloody start to the new year in Ukraine as Russia continued its aerial assault on the country.

Moscow launched missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities on 1 January 2023 after a severe New Year's Eve offensive.

Air raid sirens sounded in capital Kyiv after midnight. Another strike at noon in the southern Zaporizhzhia region killed one person, according to the head of the regional military administration, Alexander Starukh.

Following the attacks, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the Russians cannot take away a single year from Ukraine. He praised the "sense of unity, of authenticity, of life itself" of Ukrainian citizens. "They will not take away our independence. We will not give them anything," he added.
