Russian forces inside Ukraine capital Kyiv; Vladimir Putin govt says 'lay down arms for talks'

In a grim milestone in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, Russian forces reportedly entered the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv on February 25, even as Moscow said it's ready for talks only if Ukraine lays down arms.

Ukrainian soldiers were seen running on Kyiv streets near St Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery, while explosions were reported from the city centre. Reports suggested that an advance party of the Russian invasion force had entered the Ukrainian capital, leading to a fierce battle with government forces.

Explosions and small arms fire were also reported from Obolonsky district in Kyiv's north. America as well as Ukraine have claimed that Russian President Vladimir Putin aims to topple the pro-West government in Kyiv.

Russia's foreign minister also met leaders of the separatist-controlled areas of Luhansk and Donetsk, which have been recognised as independent by Putin. The Russian government continued trying to pin the blame for the war on Ukraine, accusing the latter of attacking separatist-controlled territories.
