Turkey earthquake: 3-year-old buried under apartment rubble pulled alive after 43 hours

A three-year-old boy was rescued from under the rubble of an apartment building in Kahramanmaras, one of the Turkish cities badly affected by a devastating earthquake.

Arif Kaan was removed from under the debris by search and rescue teams 43 hours after the quake struck.

He was transferred to a hospital with his father - Ertugrul Kisi, who was also saved earlier from under the rubble - accompanying him, according to private news agency DHA.

Monday’s magnitude 7.8 quake and powerful aftershocks cut a swath of destruction that stretched hundreds of kilometers (miles) across southeastern Turkey and neighbouring Syria.

The shaking toppled thousands of buildings and heaped more misery on a region wracked by Syria’s 12-year civil war and refugee crisis.

A frantic race is underway to find more survivors and help the injured.

The death toll across both countries has climbed above 7,700 and was expected to rise further.
