Ukraine invasion: On day 7, Russia takes control of Kherson, massive assault on Kharkiv

On the seventh day of Ukraine invasion, Russian forces took control of Kherson city in Southern Ukraine on Wednesday.

Russian defence ministry claimed that their forces have taken the regional centre of Kherson under full control.

Ramping up the assault on big cities, Russian paratroopers landed in Kharkiv, which is Ukraine's second-most populous city. The Ukrainian Army said that there were clashes as soon as Russia's airborne troops landed. Kharkiv, which is a largely Russian-speaking city near the Russian border, has a population of around 1.4 million.

On Tuesday, Kharkiv had come under heavy bombardment from the Russians. Reports said that military headquarters and several residential buildings were hit by Russian missiles in Kharkiv.

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged Russia to stop bombings before talks on a truce. The first round of talks between the two sides didn't deliver any results and Russia has increased the intensity of its attacks.

A 40-mile-long convoy of Russian tanks is approaching towards the Capital Kyiv, satellite images have shown.
