US man arrested for using Apple AirTag to stalk ex-wife: police

A US man has been arrested for allegedly using Apple AirTag to stalk his ex-wife, US media reported.

Resident of Tennessee, Carlos Atkins started stalking his wife after she left him. As a result of alleged stalking, the woman moved to her relatives' place where also Atkins followed him.

She reportedly asked his daughter to tell Atkins not to contact her again. However, the accused contacted the woman again, this time through her nephew's phone.

The woman then confronted Atkins about the AirTag she found inside her car to which he confessed to having placed it so that he could keep an eye on her.

The accused has been charged with electronic tracking of Motor vehicle.

Reacting to the incident, Apple told FoxNews, "AirTag was designed to help people locate their personal belongings, not to track people or another person's property, and we condemn in the strongest possible terms any malicious use of our products. Unwanted tracking has long been a societal problem, and we took this concern seriously in the design of AirTag. It's why the Find My network is built with privacy in mind, uses end-to-end encryption, and why we innovated with the first-ever proactive system to alert you of unwanted tracking. We hope this starts an industry trend for others to also provide these sorts of proactive warnings in their products."
