The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won a majority in the Lok Sabha election.

President Droupadi Murmu dissolved the 17th Lok Sabha on Wednesday on the advice of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Cabinet, according to the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
The Cabinet, in its meeting held on Wednesday, advised the President to dissolve the current Lok Sabha with immediate effect, it said.
"The President has accepted the advice of the Cabinet on 05.06.2024 and signed the Order dissolving the 17th Lok Sabha in exercise of the powers conferred upon her by Sub-clause (b) of Clause (2) of Article 85 of the Constitution," a communique issued by the Rashtrapati Bhavan read.
The term of the current Lok Sabha was to end on June 16.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi tendered his resignation to President Murmu, who accepted it and asked him to continue till the new government assumes office.

Senior leaders of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance deliberated on the details of government formation at a meeting here Wednesday, a day after the ruling coalition won a majority in the Lok Sabha election which paved the way for a third term for Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu, JD(U) leader and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Shiv Sena leader and Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and LJP (Ram Vilas) leader Chirag Paswan were among those who were present at the meeting chaired by Modi. Senior BJP leaders were also in attendance.
The TDP, JD(U), Shinde-led Shiv Sena and the LJP (Ram Vilas) have won 16, 12, seven and five seats respectively and will play a crucial role in the government formation.
Sources said National Democratic Alliance (NDA) leaders are expected to formally repose their faith in Modi's leadership and that MPs of the coalition's constituents may meet in a couple of days to elect him as their leader.
"I have not come here to demand anything. I have come here to support Modiji in forming the government. Modiji has got a majority. The NDA will form the government under Modiji's leadership," Shinde told reporters at the airport here.
Though there was no official word on the date for the oath-taking ceremony, there is a view among some members of the alliance that it may take place over the weekend if the contours of the new government are quickly worked out.
Parties like the TDP and the JD(U) are expected to demand some key portfolios as their support will be crucial for government formation and survival.
Modi is set for a record-equalling third term at the helm, though the new government is likely to be different in composition and character with a bigger share for the BJP's allies.

Tharoor added that but for now, there are five years to serve and he is determined to do his best for the people he represents during that time.
Asked about the close fight and if the Left made it difficult for him, Tharoor said CPI candidate Pannyan Raveendran took two and a half lakh votes.
"But the other is the three areas that are represented by the CPI(M), the CPI candidate came last and the BJP candidate came first. There are some legitimate questions being asked as to how exactly and why exactly that happened. But you know at the end of the day, a victory is a victory and we are savouring it as sweet," Tharoor told PTI.
On the BJP winning its first seat in Kerala with actor-politician Suresh Gopi winning the Thrissur seat by a huge margin, Tharoor said it needs to be taken seriously as for the first time one seat has gone to the BJP.
"But I must say Suresh Gopi, whom I know well and he supported me in 2009 is not a typical BJP candidate. He went out of his way to declare his secular credentials, appealed overtly to the minority voters in Thrissur particularly to the Christian community, and had this personal quality of being a celebrity candidate, a well regarded movie star as well as the host of the Malayalam edition of the Kaun Banega Crorepati," Tharoor said.
"All of these make him a very unusual figure and it may not be that easily replicable elsewhere. Certainly if the BJP is going to abandon its communal message and go for the kind of secular campaign that Gopi led, perhaps they might do better but right now they have just gone from being a 13 per cent party in keral to a 16 per cent party in Kerala," Tharoor said.

The people cited above said Nepalese Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda', Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay and Prime Minister of Mauritius Pravind Jugnauth are set to be invited to Modi's swearing-in ceremony.
Modi had a separate phone conversations with Prachanda.
The formal invitations are set to be sent on Thursday, said one of the people cited above.
The leaders of regional grouping SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) countries attended Modi's first swearing-in ceremony when he took the reins as the prime minister after a massive electoral victory for the BJP.
Leaders of the BIMSTEC countries attended Modi's swearing-in ceremony in 2019 when he became prime minister for the second consecutive term.
Modi is likely to take oath on June 8.

Amid the surprising and stellar performance by the INDIA bloc in the Lok Sabha elections 2024, the results also saw unusual winners--Pro Khalistani leader Amritpal Singh and Engineer Rashid.
Both jailed candidates won the Lok Sabha seats with significant margins. While Singh--who is currently lodged in Assam's Dibrugarh jail under NSA contested the Khadoor Sahib seat in Punjab as an independent candidate, Engineer Rashid, also an independent candidate beat seasoned politician Omar Abdullah from Baramullah.
Now that both these candidates have been elected to the lower house, question arises what next. How are these jailed MPs going to act as parliamentarians. What about their oath?
Both Amritpal Singh and Rashid's election victory means that they now have a constitutional mandate as parliamentarians, despite being in prison. However, both lawmakers face serious charges. While Singh is jailed under National Security Act (NSA), Rashid is behind bars under stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) in an alleged terror-funding case
To fulfil their role as parliamentarians--the first step they need to take is swearing-in. Which is possible.
Going back into brief history, in March, amid money laundering charges and incarceration in Tihar, Aam Aadmi Party leader Sanjay Singh received court approval to take his oath as a Rajya Sabha MP for a second term. The court directed the jail superintendent to ensure his secure transportation to Parliament and back.
In a similar vein, back in 2021, despite being in prison, Akhil Gogoi, after winning from Sibsagar, Assam, was permitted by an NIA court to briefly leave confinement for his Assam Legislative Assembly oath-taking ceremony.
It's crucial to understand that being granted permission to take oath doesn't equate to bail release but rather signifies a special parole for the day. Subsequently, the jailed lawmaker must inform the Speaker of their inability to attend proceedings, as per Article 101(4) of the Constitution, which mandates seat vacancy if an MP misses over 60 days without permission.
For participation in Parliament sessions or voting, the lawmaker must seek court approval. However, only a conviction resulting in a two-year or longer sentence would lead to parliamentary disqualification.

Incarcerated under the stringent National Security Act, which allows the detention of individuals for up to 12 months without pressing formal charges, Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh have moved a court in Assam seeking to attend the upcoming Lok Sabha session, so that he can take oath as a member of the lower house of the Parliament. Amritpal's parents and his wife have been campaigning in Dibrugarh&nbsp;since the news of the Sikh preacher, who has openly expressed his sympathies with Khalistan groups, winning the Lok Sabha election from Khadoor Sahib in Punjab trickled on June 4.&nbsp; Photos on the internet showed Amritpal's parents distributing sweets among the prison staff and guards to celebrate their son&rsquo;s victory. His mother Balwinder Kaur said that she brought a new set of clothes and shoes for her son which he will 'need for his oath taking as a MP'.
While his family moved a plea for his temporary release for the oath taking ceremony, Amritpal will only be released after the approval of the District Magistrate and the jail authorities.&nbsp;
The 'Waris Punjab de' chief who is in jail since March 2023 won by 1,97,120 votes as an independent candidate by defeating Congress' Kulbir Singh Zira.

The actor met party activists at his office on Wednesday and expressed his gratitude to all those who voted him in power. 93% of the candidates who won the 2024 Lok Sabha elections are millionaires, up from 88% in 2019, according to an analysis by the Association of Democratic Reforms or ADR. Out of 543 winning candidates, 504 are millionaires. The top three wealthiest candidates are TDP's Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani from Andhra Pradesh's Guntur constituency with assets worth 5,705 crore rupees, BJP's Konda Vishweshwar Reddy from Telangana's Chevella with 4,568 crore rupees, and BJP's Naveen Jindal from Haryana&rsquo;s Kurukshetra with 1,241 crore rupees.
In 2019, 475 (88 per cent) winning candidates were millionaires and 443 (82 per cent) in 2014.
The trend indicates a steady climb since 2009 when only 315 (58 per cent) MPs were millionaires.

According to the analysis, 227 (95 per cent) of the BJP's 240 winning candidates, 92 (93 per cent) of the Congress' 99, 21 (95 per cent) of the DMK's 22, 27 (93 per cent) of the TMC's 29 and 34 (92 per cent) of the Samajwadi Party's 37 candidates have declared assets worth more than Rs 1 crore.
All winning candidates of the AAP (3), the JDU (12) and the TDP (16) are millionaires, ADR data showed.
The analysis also delves into candidates&rsquo; chances of winning based on their financial backgrounds.
It found that the probability of a millionaire candidate clinching victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections stood at 19.6 per cent, compared to a meagre 0.7 per cent for candidates with assets less than a crore.
The analysis also provides a breakdown of wealth distribution among the winning candidates.
The data showed that 42 per cent of the candidates possess assets totalling Rs 10 crore and above.
While 19 per cent of the candidates fall within the bracket of Rs 5 to 10 crore, 32 per cent hold assets ranging between Rs 1 and 5 crore.
Only about 1 per cent of the winning candidates have assets worth less than Rs 20 lakh.

Leaders of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance unanimously elected Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the ruling bloc's leader on Wednesday, passing a resolution to underscore the government's commitment to serving the poor, women, youths, farmers and deprived sections of society.
They met at Modi's residence in New Delhi a day after the NDA won a majority of seats in the Lok Sabha election, paving the way for him to take the oath for a third consecutive term, a first for any ruling alliance since 1962.
TDP leader N Chandrababu Naidu, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, LJP(R) leader Chirag Paswan and NCP leader Praful Patel were among those who attended the meeting.
The resolution said the NDA government will continue working to lift people's living standards for the country's all-round development while conserving its heritage.
"We are all proud that the NDA fought the 2024 Lok Sabha polls unitedly under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and won. We all NDA leaders unanimously elect Narendra Modi as our leader," it added.
The resolution also said that people have seen the country being developed in every sector in the last 10 years due to the pro-people policies of the NDA government under Modi.&nbsp;

The INDIA bloc would welcome all parties that share a fundamental commitment to the values enshrined in the Preamble of Constitution, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said on Wednesday at the first meeting of the opposition grouping after its impressive gains in Lok Sabha polls.
Addressing the opposition leaders who converged at his residence, Kharge said all INDIA alliance partners fought well, unitedly and resolutely.
"The mandate is decisively against Mr Modi, against him and the substance and style of his politics. It is a huge political loss for him personally apart from being a clear moral defeat as well. However, he is determined to subvert the will of the people," he said.
"The INDIA alliance welcomes all parties which share its fundamental commitment to the values enshrined in the Preamble to our Constitution and to its many provisions for economic, social and political justice," the Congress chief said in his opening remarks.
Thanking the INDIA bloc partners, he said, "I welcome all INDIA alliance partners. We fought well, fought unitedly, fought resolutely."
