With political parties beginning to prepare for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, all eyes were on how the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress will perform in Gujarat.
The electorally important state threw up a politically significant result, albeit not surprising, if exit polls were to be believed. The Congress gave its worst performance ever in the state, and the Aam Aadmi Party was limited to single digits.
But how did the BJP manage to decimate both parties in such comprehensive fashion?
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi addressed only a handful of rallies in Gujarat as compared to over 40 in 2017. Also the Congress' Bharat Jodo Yatra began in September, but didn't touch Gujarat, where it could have motivated the cadre.
On top of this, the Congress struggled with infighting and defections which weakened its campaign. The big faces of the anti-BJP narrative in 2017 - Hardik Patel and Alpesh Thakor - quit the Congress as the party floundered.
Meanwhile, new entrant AAP rose at the Congress' cost. This was visible in the vote shares as Congress' share fell, while BJP's increased.

From 127 in 2002 to 117 in 2007, from 115 in 2012 to 99 in 2017. In every Gujarat election in the last 2 decades, the BJP saw its seat share gradually fall. But the party has reversed the trend this time, and in a record-setting manner.
The BJP secured more seats than 149, which Congress won in almost 4 decades ago in 1985. There may be 5 major reasons behind this.
The party's campaign was led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who addressed more than 30 rallies, and held 3 mega roadshows. More significantly, there was no mass agitation like the Patidar protest in 2017 which had painted the BJP into a corner.
Additionally, the BJP orchestrated a reshuffle till the highest level of the Chief Minister to counter anti-incumbency after almost 3 decades of rule. With religious issues paying dividends in Gujarat, the BJP escalated the agenda by promising a Uniform Civil Code, and survey of Waqf properties and madrasas.
Finally, the ruling party was helped by the absence of Congress' top leaders during the campaign, and also the entry of the Aam Aadmi Party which divided Opposition votes.

But Bera surpassed his rivals in the later rounds of vote counting.
Khambhalia emerged as one of the high-profile seats in the Gujarat Assembly elections after the AAP fielded Gadhvi, its CM face, from this constituency in the Saurashtra region.
A former TV news anchor, Gadhvi was born and brought up in Khambhalia. But social equations in this Ahir-dominated seat probably did not favour him as his own Gadhvi community is numerically not significant in the area.
On the other hand, both Madam of the Congress and the BJP's Bera come from the Ahir community. Madam had also enjoyed the support of the Muslim community which constitutes the second largest voting bloc, but this time around it seemed to have favoured the AAP.
In the last several decades, no non-Ahir candidate has won from the seat.
The BJP had won the seat in 2007 and 2012 but lost to the Congress in a bypoll in 2014. The Congress retained it in 2017.

With a vote share of nearly 28 per cent, the Congress won or was ahead in 16 seats.
BJP also managed to improve its tally as the issues it faced in the 2017 state polls like the state-wide outburst of anger among the Patidar community and restlessness among the traders over the GST regime appear to have faded.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Bhupendra Patel was sworn-in as the Chief Minister of Gujarat for a second straight term in Gandhinagar on Monday in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and other dignitaries.
The oath was administered by Governor Acharya Devvrat at a function held at the Helipad Ground near the new Secretariat at 2 PM.
Along with Patel, some new ministers are also took the oath.
In the just-concluded Gujarat Assembly elections, counting for which was held on December 8, the BJP won a seventh straight term by winning record 156 seats in the 182-member House. The Congress won 17 constituencies and AAP 5.
Patel, 60, resigned as chief minister along with his entire cabinet on Friday to pave the way for the formation of a new government following the election results.
He was elected as the leader of the BJP legislative party on Saturday, following which he met the governor and staked the claim to form the next government.

"The newly-elected MLAs met today at 'Kamalam,' where the proposal to name Bhupendra Patel as the chief minister of Gujarat was unanimously approved," the BJP said in a statement.

Bhupendra Patel will continue as the chief minister of Gujarat for a second straight term with the newly-elected Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs electing him as the leader of the legislative party during a meeting Gandhinagar on Saturday.
Patel's name was declared as the leader of the legislative party unanimously at the meeting held at the party's state headquarters 'Kamalam'.
"The newly-elected MLAs met today at 'Kamalam,' where the proposal to name Bhupendra Patel as the chief minister of Gujarat was unanimously approved," the BJP said in a statement.
Patel, 60, had resigned as the chief minister along with his entire cabinet on Friday to pave the way for formation of a new government in the state after the BJP registered a landslide victory in the just concluded Assembly elections.
Senior BJP leaders Rajnath Singh, B S Yediyurappa and Arjun Munda were present for the meeting as the party's central observers.
Patel won a second straight term from the Ghatlodia Assembly seat in Ahmedabad district by 1.92 lakh votes in this year's election. In September last year, he had replaced Vijay Rupani as the chief minister.

The BJP registered a historic victory in Gujarat by clinching 156 seats in the 182-member House on Thursday, much higher than its tally of 99 seats in 2017.
The party had already announced that the swearing-in ceremony of the new government will take place on December 12, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah will be present along with chief ministers of BJP-ruled states.
Gujarat BJP chief C R Paatil had said that Bhupendra Patel would continue as the chief minister and the swearing-in ceremony of the new government will take place on Monday at the Helipad Ground in Gandhinagar.&nbsp;

Of these 14, all but three won the election on Thursday.
In at least three cases, their direct challengers were candidates of the new entrant Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and those from the Congress.
In some cases, their victory was aided by a split in votes between the AAP and Congress, data provided by the Election Commission shows.
Harshad Ribadiya, a former Congressman who joined the BJP, was defeated by AAP's Bhupendra Bhayani in Visavadar.
Jawahar Chavda, who had resigned as Congress MLA in March 2019 and won the subsequent byelection on BJP ticket, was defeated on his home turf of Manavadar by Congress's Arvind Ladani by around 3,000 votes.
But these were exceptions.
Otherwise, former Patidar agitation leader Hardik Patel won from Viramgam as a BJP candidate. Patel defeated AAP's Amarsinh Thakor by more than 51,000 votes.
Alpesh Thakor, who had resigned as Congress MLA from Radhanpur seat in 2019 but was defeated in the byelection, managed to win from Gandhinagar South this time by a comfortable margin of more than 33,000 votes.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won the Limkheda Assembly seat in Gujarat's Dahod district where 2002 riots victim Bilkis Bano once lived.
The candidate of the opposition Congress which had promised to revoke the remission granted by the BJP-led state government to 11 convicts in the Bilkis Bano gangrape case ended up third, polling 8,000 votes.
Bano was a resident of Randhikpur village in the tribal-dominated Dahod district.
Sitting BJP MLA Shailesh Bhabhor defeated his closest rival, Aam Aadmi Party's Naresh Baria by nearly 4,000 votes.
The premature release of 11 convicts in the Bilkis Bano case became an issue in the election campaign, with the Congress mentioning it in its manifesto and vowing to ensure justice for her.
Following the remission, the 11 men walked out of the Godhra sub-jail on August 15.
Some activists and observers had predicted that as the AAP leaders remained silent on the issue while Congress leaders like Jingnesh Mevani were vocal about it, Muslims would vote for the Congress.
But ahead of the polls, Shailesh Bhabhor had confidently claimed that Bilkis Bano was never a poll issue and even Muslims supported the BJP.

With BJP securing a comprehensive victory in Gujarat, Union Home Minister took a jibe at Opposition parties Congress and Aam Aadmi Party.
Amit Shah tweeted that Gujarat had rejected those who do politics of 'revdi', empty promises, and appeasement. BJP uses the term 'revdi' to refer to freebies promised in elections, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called it a dangerous practice.
Among Congress' freebie promises were 300 units of electricity, farm loan waivers, Android phones for needy students, and free education for girls.
The Aam Aadmi Party had promised 300 units of free electricity, ₹1,000 every month to adult women, ₹3,000 per month as unemployment allowance, and farm loan waivers.
However, the BJP itself promised many freebies in its manifesto, including 2 LPG cylinders for women every year, electric scooters for meritorious women students, and free education for girls.

The constituencies which BJP won were Limbayat, Bapunagar, Abdasa, Jambusar, Bhuj, Vejalpur, Bharuch, Surat East, Vagra, and Dariapur.

The constituencies which BJP won were Limbayat, Bapunagar, Abdasa, Jambusar, Bhuj, Vejalpur, Bharuch, Surat East, Vagra, and Dariapur.

Ahead of the Gujarat elections, the Congress targeted the BJP over the release of men convicted for the gangrape of Bilkis Bano and murder of her family during the 2002 riots.
Despite allegations of bias against the minority community, the BJP managed to win most of the constituencies considered Muslim-majority areas.
There are at least 12 Muslim-dominated seats, according to reports, and BJP won ten of them.

The constituencies which BJP won were Limbayat, Bapunagar, Abdasa, Jambusar, Bhuj, Vejalpur, Bharuch, Surat East, Vagra, and Dariapur. The BJP's winning margin in these seats ranged from 5,400 to 64,400.
The Congress bagged the other two Muslim-majority seats of Danilimda and Jamalpur-Khadia.
