Boat capsizes near Gateway of India in Mumbai, one dead

A passenger died and 66 were rescued, while search is underway around a dozen others aboard a ferry that capsized off Mumbai coast on Wednesday.

The Navy and Coast Guard have launched a massive rescue operation, with 11 Navy boats and three boats of Marine Police and a boat of Coast Guard being deployed in the area.

Two passengers died and 75 others on board a ferry were rescued after a speed boat crashed into it off Mumbai coast on Wednesday, officials said.
The Neelkamal ferry, with 80 persons and five crew members on board, was on way to Elephanta Islands, a popular tourist destination near Mumbai, when the speed boat circled it before crashing into it, a viral video of the accident shows.
A local leader claimed that the speed boat belonged to the Navy, but there was no confirmation from the Navy on this.
The Navy and Coast Guard launched a massive rescue operation, with 11 Navy boats and three boats of Marine Police and a boat of Coast Guard being deployed in the area, a defence official said.
Four helicopters were involved in the search and rescue operation, the official said.
Personnel from police, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority and fishermen in the area are also involved in the rescue work, the official said.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis informed the state assembly in Nagpur that search is underway for seven to eight passengers who are yet to be traced.
The speed boat, which is said to belong to either the Navy or Coast Guard, apparently lost control and rammed into the ferry, Fadnavis said.

Punjab Farmers' Rail Roko protest affects train movements

Train services in Punjab were affected as farmers squatted on rail tracks at more than 50 places on Wednesday as part of their three-hour 'Rail Roko' protest.

According to railway authorities of the Ferozepur division, 12 trains were cancelled, two each were short-terminated and short-originated and 34 trains were delayed because of farmers' protest at 52 places.

Train services in Punjab were affected as farmers squatted on rail tracks at more than 50 places on Wednesday as part of their three-hour 'Rail Roko' protest to press the Centre to accept their various demands, including a legally binding minimum support price (MSP) for crops.
The call for the 'rail roko' was given by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha.
Kisan Mazdoor Morcha leader Sarwan Singh Pandher said farmers blocked rail tracks at many places from 12 noon to 3 pm as both state and central governments had deliberately adopted an indifferent approach towards them.
According to railway authorities of the Ferozepur division, 12 trains were cancelled, two each were short-terminated and short-originated and 34 trains were delayed because of farmers' protest at 52 places.
Among the trains cancelled were Jalandhar to Hoshiarpur, Amritsar to Qadian, Pathankot to Verka and Hoshiarpur to Jalandhar City.
Trains that were delayed were stopped at places where passengers could get tea and meals, the officials said.
Protesting farmers blocked train routes at many places, including Moga, Faridkot, Kadian and Batala in Gurdaspur; Phillaur in Jalandhar; Tanda, Dasuya, Mahilpur in Hoshiarpur; Makhu, Talwandi Bhai in Ferozepur; Sahnewal in Ludhiana; Shambhu in Patiala; Mohali; Sunam and Lehra in Sangrur, Rampura Phul in Bathinda and Devidaspura in Amritsar.
The Humsafar Express from Jammu to Sealdah, Dadar Express from Amritsar to Mumbai and Shan-e-Punjab Express from New Delhi to Amritsar were halted at different platforms of the Ludhiana railway station.

In Hoshiarpur, farmers blocked the Jalandhar-Jammu rail track at railway stations Bhangala, Dasuya, and Tanda.
They also blocked the rail-road crossing at Mandiala village and the Hoshiarpur Railway Station on the Jalandhar-Hoshiarpur section, disrupting rail traffic in the area.
Due to the rail blockade, a train from Jammu to Ahmedabad was halted at Mukerian Railway Station.
Deepak Singh (25), a resident of Tarn Taran who was travelling with his wife, two children, and brother after visiting the Dera Baba Gur Bar Bhag Singh shrine in Una (Himachal Pradesh), was among the passengers who faced inconvenience due to the rail traffic disruption.
He said that he had been waiting for over two hours at Hoshiarpur railway station for the train to Jalandhar.
Manoj Yadav (35), a mason from Chhattisgarh, currently residing in Narain Nagar, Hoshiarpur, also shared his ordeal.
He was travelling with his wife and two children to Chhattisgarh. Given the long distance, he said that trains were the only suitable option for their journey, leaving them with no choice but to wait for the protest to end.
In Amritsar, farmers blocked the Amritsar-Delhi rail track as they squatted on the track at Devidaspura village near the Manawala railway station.
Farmer leader Pandher said the farmers were demanding a legal guarantee of MSP for crops, along with debt waiver, and pensions for farmers and labourers. He alleged that both state and central governments had "deliberately adopted an indifferent approach towards the farmers".
On the Ambala-Chandigarh railway line, hundreds of farmers squatted near Sarsini village of Punjab, about 5 km from Ambala City.
Farmers under the banner of Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha have been camping at Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana since February 13 after their march to Delhi was stopped by security forces.
For the past three weeks, Punjab farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal has been on a fast-unto-death at the Khanauri border point between Punjab and Haryana to press the Centre to accept the agitating farmers' demands, including a legal guarantee of MSP on crops.
A "jatha" (group) of 101 farmers made three attempts to enter Delhi on foot on December 6, December 8 and again on December 14. However, Haryana security personnel did not allow them to proceed.
Among the farmers' demands are no hike in the electricity tariff, withdrawal of police cases and "justice" for the victims of the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence, reinstatement of the Land Acquisition Act, 2013, and compensation to the families of the farmers who died during a previous agitation in 2020-21.

Congress demands resignation of Amit Shah over Ambedkar remarks

The Congress on Wednesday demanded the resignation of Home Minister Amit Shah for his remarks in the Rajya Sabha which it claimed were an insult to B R Ambedkar.

The Congress on Tuesday alleged that Shah's remarks in the Rajya Sabha during a debate on the Constitution show that the BJP and the RSS leaders have a "lot of hatred" for Ambedkar and demanded an apology from him.

The Congress on Wednesday demanded the resignation of Home Minister Amit Shah for his remarks in the Rajya Sabha which it claimed were an insult to B R Ambedkar.
The opposition party also demanded that Shah should apologise publicly and in Parliament for the remarks.
Referring to Shah's speech in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said the Home Minister accused us of speaking about Ambedkar 100 times and "told us that had we remembered God so many times we could have achieved heaven seven times".
"The 'insult' caused to Babasaheb Ambedkar by Amit Shah is wrong. I demand his resignation," he told reporters in Parliament premises.
"Shah has insulted Babasaheb and the Constitution written by him," Kharge, who was flanked by other opposition leaders, charged.
"The ideology of Manusmriti and RSS shows that they do not want to give respect to Babasaheb Ambedkar and the Constitution. That is why we, all parties, demand his resignation and he should apologise to the country," the Congress chief said.
"If he continues to talk like this, there will be fire across the country if anyone insults Babasaheb Ambedkar like this. We parties would not accept such an insult of Babasaheb Ambedkar," he said.
Congress general secretary K C Venugopal said all Pradesh Congress Committees will be holding marches at all Raj Bhavans across the country on Wednesday over the Ambedkar remarks issue and also the Adani row.

Earlier addresesing a press conference, Congress MP Neeraj Dangi said his party demands Shah's apology for the remarks.
"In Rajya Sabha, Amit Shah Ji said that taking the name of Babasaheb Ambedkar Ji has become a fashion. This is a direct insult to the Dalits of the country and Babasaheb," he said.
Shah has shown the whole country what kind of thinking BJP leaders have, he said.
"The deprived and exploited class, which they have insulted, this is the same class which will reduce them from 240 to 40," Dangi said.
"On behalf of the Congress party, I demand that Amit Shah ji should apologise publicly and in the House. Considering what he has said about Babasaheb Ambedkar, he has lost the right to hold a constitutional post," Dangi said.
He should resign from the post of Home Minister, he said.

Former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi had said those who believe in Manusmriti will definitely be at odds with Ambedkar. Congress general secretary-in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh had shared a video snippet on X from Shah's speech in the upper house.
"Abhi ek fashion ho gaya hai - Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar. Itna naam agar bhagwan ka lete to saat janmon tak swarg mil jata (It has become a fashion to say Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar'. If they had taken God's name so many times, they would have got a place in heaven)," Shah had said, taking a swipe at the opposition.
The home minister attacked the Congress in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, saying the party treated the Constitution as the "private fiefdom" of one family and "played fraud" with Parliament.
Concluding a two-day debate on the "Glorious Journey of 75 Years of the Constitution of India", Shah ripped into the Congress for its appeasement politics and claimed that the party wanted to breach the 50 per cent quota limit to provide reservation to Muslims.
He also asked the Congress if it supported the Muslim personal law and alleged that the party never worked for the welfare of the backward classes. Shah asserted that the BJP has already brought in a common civil code (Uniform Civil Code) in Uttarakhand and will implement it in all states.

AAP's Sanjeevani Yojana: Free Elderly Care

AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal Wednesday announced that 'Sanjivni Yojna' would be launched for free treatment of people aged above 60 years after his party returns to power in Delhi.

Kejriwal said registration for the Sanjeevani scheme will begin within two-three days.

NASA delays Sunita Williams' return to earth

Williams and Wilmore launched aboard Boeing's Starliner on June 5, 2024, as part of its first crewed flight under NASA's Commercial Crew Program. The mission, initially intended to last just one week, aimed to evaluate the Starliner's performance in launch, docking, and landing phases. However, technical issues with the spacecraft forced an early return of the capsule to Earth&mdash;without the astronauts onboard&mdash;leading to significant delays in their planned journey back. 
Challenges with Return Timelines
Originally expected to return in February 2025, their return has now been postponed to late March or early April 2025. The delay arises from additional time required by SpaceX to prepare a new Crew Dragon capsule to accommodate the astronauts. NASA explored alternate options, including using a different SpaceX capsule, but ultimately decided to extend their stay until the new capsule is ready for launch.

SpaceX Steps in to Provide a Solution
After deeming Boeing&rsquo;s Starliner unsuitable for the astronauts' return due to persistent malfunctions and safety concerns, NASA partnered with SpaceX to adjust its Crew-9 mission. SpaceX's Crew Dragon capsule will now bring Williams and Wilmore back to Earth, underscoring its pivotal role in NASA's current operations.

Significance of Starliner&rsquo;s Mission Despite the setbacks, the Starliner mission marked a critical milestone as Boeing's first crewed flight. This mission was essential for NASA to evaluate the spacecraft's readiness for future crewed missions to the ISS. As NASA and its commercial partners address these challenges, Williams and Wilmore continue their extended tenure aboard the ISS, contributing to ongoing research and maintenance activities. Their eventual return aboard SpaceX's Crew Dragon is anticipated as a step toward resolving these operational hurdles.

PM Modi defends Amit Shah from Congress' attack

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday stoutly defended Amit Shah from the Congress' charge that he insulted B R Ambedkar in his speech in the Rajya Sabha.

In a searing attack on the Congress, Modi said if the party and its "rotten ecosystem" think their "malicious lies" can hide their misdeeds of several years, especially their insults towards Ambedkar.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday stoutly defended Amit Shah from the Congress' charge that he insulted B R Ambedkar in his speech in the Rajya Sabha, asserting that the Home Minister in fact exposed the party's "dark history of insulting" the architect of the Constitution, leaving the main opposition "stung and stunned".
"They are clearly stung and stunned by the facts he presented, which is why they are now indulging in theatrics. Sadly, for them, people know the truth," Modi said in a series of posts on X.
When it comes to Ambedkar, his government's respect and reverence are absolute, the prime minister asserted.
In a searing attack on the Congress, Modi said if the party and its "rotten ecosystem" think their "malicious lies" can hide their misdeeds of several years, especially their insults towards Ambedkar, they are gravely mistaken.
He said people of India have seen time and again how one party, led by one dynasty, a reference to the Nehru-Gandhi family, has indulged in every possible dirty trick to obliterate Ambedkar's legacy and humiliate the SC/ST communities.
The list of the Congress' sins towards Ambedkar includes getting him defeated in elections not once but twice, first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru campaigning against him and making his loss a prestige issue, denying him a Bharat Ratna, and not allowing his portrait a place of pride in Parliament's Central Hall, the prime minister said.
He said, "The Congress can try as they want but they can't deny that the worst massacres against SC/ST Communities have happened under their regimes. For years, they sat in power but did nothing substantive to empower the SC and ST communities."
Modi said it is due to Ambedkar that "we are what we are", as he listed a series of measures taken by his government to implement his vision and accord respect to the iconic personality.
He said his government has worked tirelessly to fulfil Ambedkar's vision over the last decade.
"Take any sector - be it removing 25 crore people from poverty, strengthening the SC/ST Act, our Government&rsquo;s flagship programmes like Swachh Bharat, PM Awas Yojana, Jal Jeevan Mission, Ujjwala Yojana and more, each of them has touched the lives of the poor and marginalised. Our Government has worked to develop Panchteerth, the five iconic places associated with Dr. Ambedkar," he added.
For decades, Modi said, there was a pending issue involving land for "Chaitya Bhoomi", where Ambedkar was cremated. "Not only did our Government resolve the issue, I have gone to pray there as well," he added.
"We have also developed 26, Alipur Road in Delhi, where Dr. Ambedkar spent his last years. The house where he lived in London has also been acquired by the Government. When it comes to Dr. Ambedkar, our respect and reverence is absolute," he said.
Both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha witnessed protests from the Congress and some other opposition parties over Shah's alleged insult of Ambedkar, resulting in both the Houses being adjourned.

PM Modi to visit Kuwait on December 21-22

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to Kuwait on Saturday on a two-day trip to further strengthen "multifaceted" ties between India and the Gulf nation.

During the visit, Modi will hold discussions with the leadership of Kuwait and will also interact with the Indian community.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be on a two-day visit to Kuwait from Saturday in what will be the first trip to the Gulf nation by an Indian prime minister in 43 years.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), announcing the visit, said it will provide an opportunity to further strengthen the "multifaceted" ties between India and Kuwait.
Modi is paying the visit at the invitation of Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, it said.
During the visit, Modi will hold discussions with the leadership of Kuwait and will also interact with the Indian community.
"India and Kuwait share traditionally close and friendly relations which are rooted in history and have been underpinned by economic and strong people to people linkages," the MEA said in a statement.
The last Indian prime minister to visit Kuwait was Indira Gandhi in 1981.
India is among the top trading partners of Kuwait. The Indian community is the largest expatriate community in Kuwait.
"The visit will provide an opportunity to further strengthen the multifaceted ties between India and Kuwait," the MEA added.
Kuwait is among India's top trading partners, with bilateral trade valued at USD 10.47 billion in the financial year 2023-24.
Kuwait is India's sixth largest crude supplier, meeting 3 percent of the country's energy needs.
Indian exports to Kuwait reached USD 2 billion for the first time, while investments by the Kuwait Investment Authority in India exceed USD 10 billion.
India and Kuwait have enjoyed traditionally friendly relations, with links dating back to pre-oil Kuwait when maritime trade with India was the backbone of its economy.
Kuwait's economy revolved around its fine harbour and maritime activities which included ship building, pearl diving, fishing and voyages to India on wooden dhows carrying dates, Arabian horses and pearls that were traded for wood, cereals, clothes and spices, according to people tracking the ties between the two nations.
The Indian Rupee remained legal tender in Kuwait until 1961, a symbol of the enduring economic and cultural ties.
Diplomatic relations between the two countries were formally established in 1961, with India initially represented by a trade commissioner.
Emir Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmed Al Jabar Al Sabah visited India on a private visit in July 2017.
The last high-level visit from either side was that of the prime minister of Kuwait to India in 2013.

A BJP leader from Ayodhya has written to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, asking him to reclaim the land allotted for the construction of a mosque here and claiming that no substantial endeavour has been undertaken to build it.
On November 9, 2019, settling a fractious issue that went back more than a century, a five-judge bench headed by the then CJI Ranjan Gogoi paved the way for the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya, at the site where the 16th century Babri Masjid once stood. It also ruled that an alternative five-acre plot would be found for a mosque in the holy town.

The Sunni Central Waqf Board later formed the Indo-Islamic Cultural Foundation to build a new mosque on the land allotted by the state government in the Dhannipur area of the district.
BJP leader Rajneesh Singh, in his letter to the chief minister on December 10, said that since the apex court's verdict, "no substantial endeavour has been undertaken by the Muslim community to construct the mosque".
Their "intention was never to establish a mosque there but to perpetuate the discord under the pretext of a mosque", he alleged.
"In compliance with the Supreme Court's order, the land allocated to Sunni Central Waqf Board in Ayodhya is being used by the mosque's responsible persons for other purposes. The Muslim community's intention was never to construct the mosque but rather to keep the disturbance and disorder alive under the guise of a mosque. However, this has not been possible due to your leadership," Singh said in the letter to Adityanath.
Asserting that "a mosque is not necessary for offering prayers anyway," he appealed to the chief minister to "issue strict instructions to the officials of the Ayodhya mosque trust to use the land in compliance with the Supreme Court orders".
In case of being unable to do so, issue directives to return the land to the government to prevent its misuse, Singh said.
In a conversation with PTI, he said, "The Muslim community merely wishes to preserve Babar's legacy through this mosque and aims to manipulate Hindu sentiments in the name of Babri Masjid."
When PTI contacted Athar Husain, the secretary of the Ayodhya Masjid Trust, for his reaction to the issue, he refused to comment.

The Lok Sabha witnessed intense debate on Tuesday as the government introduced two pivotal bills aimed at implementing simultaneous elections across India. The bills &ndash; &lsquo;The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024&rsquo; and &lsquo;The Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024&rsquo; &ndash; propose a framework for conducting elections to the Lok Sabha and state assemblies simultaneously under the "One Nation, One Election" initiative.
The bills, introduced by Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, were approved for further scrutiny by a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), with 269 members voting in favour and 198 opposing. This marked the first instance of electronic voting in the new Parliament House.
Contentious Debate in Lok Sabha
The opposition fiercely criticized the bills, labelling them an attack on India&rsquo;s federal structure and the democratic spirit enshrined in the Constitution. Congress MP Manish Tewari argued that the bills violated the "basic structure doctrine" of the Constitution, emphasizing that federalism and democratic processes are fundamental features that cannot be altered.
Echoing Tewari&rsquo;s sentiments, DMK MP TR Baalu described the move as "anti-federal" and asserted that simultaneous elections undermine the autonomy of voters to elect governments for their full five-year term. Similarly, Samajwadi Party MP Dharmendra Yadav contended that the bills contradict the principles established by the framers of the Constitution, accusing the government of disregarding their wisdom.
Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee claimed the legislation infringes on the autonomy of state legislatures, asserting, &ldquo;The proposed bill undermines the basic structure of the Constitution and is therefore ultra vires. State governments and assemblies are not subordinate to Parliament or the central government.&rdquo;
Government's Defense
Responding to the criticism, Home Minister Amit Shah clarified that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had recommended sending the bills to a JPC for detailed examination. Shah dismissed allegations of undermining the Constitution, asserting that the bills aim to enhance governance and streamline election processes.
The government also introduced amendments to align assembly elections in Delhi, Jammu &amp; Kashmir, and Puducherry with the proposed simultaneous elections, modifying laws such as the Government of Union Territories Act, 1963, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019.

The bills will now be scrutinized by the JPC, which will deliberate on their implications before presenting its recommendations to Parliament. While the government projects the initiative as a means to improve administrative efficiency and reduce election costs, the opposition remains united in its resistance, vowing to safeguard the federal character of India.
As discussions continue, the "One Nation, One Election" proposal has reignited debates over the balance of power between the Centre and the states, with both sides preparing for an intense legislative battle.
