Amitabh Bachchan shares why ‘market was skeptical’ about ‘Don’ title

Legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan took to his blog and shared a hilarious story about the title of his blockbuster ‘Don’.

He shared that when the makers announced ‘DON’, many in the industry were quite unaware of the word don. They were familiar with a brand called Dawn selling vests. He said the market was very skeptical and annoyed with makers as they thought it would cause confusion with the film’s name.

The veteran actor wrote, ‘Amusingly , when the film ‘DON’ was announced with me .. many in the world of Hindi cinema were quite unaware of the word don .. what they were familiar with was a product known as DAWN .. the DAWN banyaan .. vests .. And the market was very skeptical and annoyed with the makers as to why a film title should be about undergarments. Many still are.’

When Big B celebrated the 41st anniversary of the release of ‘Don’, he revealed that no one approved of the title of the movie. He said, ‘Don was a name title that no one in the market approved of. They never understood what it meant and never felt that a name such as ‘DON’ was material for the title of a Hindi film. In fact if truth be told… for many it was quite an amusing title.’

He added, ‘Much later of course with the ‘Godfather’ series the word garnered enough publicity and reckoning, to be respectable enough. But till then initially it was in the realm of humour.’

‘Don’, which was released in 1978, was written by Salim-Javed and directed by Chandra Barot. The film also starred Zeenat Aman, Iftekhar, Helen and Pran.

On the work front, Amitabh Bachchan has ‘Project K’ and ‘Section 84’ in the pipeline.
