Boycott ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’: Here is a round-up of this week’s most trending story

Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan starrer ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ has been making headlines over the last few days. The movie, which marks Aamir Khan’s comeback after a gap of 4 years, is trending on Twitter as a section of social media users are demanding its ban over old controversial statements of the actor.

Why #BoycottLaalSinghChaddha is trending

A video of Aamir’s 2015 interview has resurfaced online in which he spoke about the ‘growing intolerance’ in the country and how his wife Kiran Rao considered moving out of India for the safety of her child.

‘When I chat with Kiran at home, she says ‘Should we move out of India?’ That’s a disastrous and big statement for Kiran to make. She fears for her child. She fears what the atmosphere around us will be. She feels scared to open the newspapers every day,’ he said.

Netizens are also targeting him over his meeting with Turkey's First Lady Emine Erdogan while he was shooting for ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’.

Aamir Khan’s reaction

During his recent media interaction, the actor reacted to the boycott trend and said that he feels sad that some people think he doesn’t like India. He urged everyone to not boycott his forthcoming film.

‘Yes, I feel sad. Also, I feel sad that some of the people who are saying this, in their hearts, believe that I am someone who doesn't like India. In their hearts, they believe, but it is untrue. It is rather unfortunate that some people feel that way. That's not the case. Please don't boycott my film. Please watch my film,’ he said.

Kareena Kapoor Khan’s reaction

Kareena has also reacted to the boycott ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ row. In an exclusive interview with India Today, Kareena said, ‘Of course because the accessibility is there today. Everyone has a voice today. There are different platforms. Everyone has an opinion. So now, if that is going to be there, then you have to learn to ignore certain things. Otherwise, it will just become impossible to live your life. And that’s why I don’t take any of this seriously. I just post whatever I want to post.’

Reactions of celebrities

Kangana Ranaut

The ‘Queen’ actor took to Instagram and reacted to the controversy surrounding the upcoming film. Kangana said that Aamir Khan is the mastermind behind all the negativity. She further mentioned that this year, except for a comedy sequel, no other Hindi film has worked. According to the actor, only south films deeply rooted in Indian culture or with local flavor have enjoyed massive box office success and a Hollywood remake would have not worked anyway.

‘But now they will call India intolerant, Hindi films need to understand the pulse of audiences it's not about being a Hindu or Muslim... even after Aamir Khan ji made Hinduphobic PK or called india intolerant he gave biggest hits of his life... please stop making it about religion or ideology, it's taken away from their bad acting and bad films,’ she wrote.

Milind Soman

Milind Soman was the first celebrity to come out in the support of Aamir's ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’. In his tweet, he wrote that ‘trolls can't stop a good film.’

Rahul Dholakia

Filmmaker Rahul Dholakia also supported the Aamir Khan-Kareena Kapoor Khan starrer. He took to Twitter and wrote, ‘Trolling a film because a cast or crew members ideology differs from yours is unfair to the other hundreds who have worked hard to make the film. They have also pinned their hopes on the success of the film to help realizes their dreams. Spare a thought.’

Aamir Khan’s ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ is all set to release in theatres on August 11.
