'Emergency': Gurdwara Committee calls for ban on Kangana Ranaut’s film, calls it 'anti-sikh'

Kangana Ranaut’s 'Emergency' has sparked a major controversy, with Sikh organisations, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and the Akal Takht, demanding an immediate ban on the movie.

They say the film attempts to 'character assassinate' them and portrays them negatively.

SGPC chief Harjinder Singh Dhami held a press conference on August 21, expressing strong objections to the film.

He called for an FIR to be filed against Kangana. He further argued that Sikh sentiments have been hurt in the past by similar misrepresentations in films, and this movie is no different. He also accused the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) of being biased, demanding that Sikh representatives should be included on the censor board committee to prevent such incidents in the future.

Gyani Raghbir Singh, head of the Akal Takht, also criticised the film, claiming it deliberately portrays Sikhs as separatists. He said the film disrespects the Sikh community and accused Kangana of intentionally tarnishing their image. He was upset about the portrayal of Jarnail Singh Khalsa Bhindranwale, who the Akal Takht community considers a martyr. He added that the Sikh community can never forget the events of June 1984 and accused the film of trying to malign Bhindranwale’s character.

Gyani Raghbir Singh also pointed out that Kangana Ranaut has previously made statements against Sikhs, but the government has not taken any action against her.

Besides starring in the lead role, Kangana is also directing the film. The film features Anupam Kher, Milind Soman, Mahima Chaudhry, and Shreyas Talpade in key roles. The late actor Satish Kaushik will also appear in the film as Former Deputy Prime Minister Jagjivan Ram.

Emergency is set to release in theatres on September 6, 2024.
