Year Ender 2022: ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’, ‘The Kashmir Files’ and other movies based on true events

The audience loves to watch movies based on real-life stories that are both inspiring and informative. The story stays with us long after we’ve viewed the film. While last year was all about Siddharth Malhotra’s ‘Shershaah’, this year a few biopics were released as well.

Here’s a quick look at movies that were inspired by real-life events and notable people.

‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’

The biographical drama, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, starred Alia Bhatt in the titular role. The film is loosely based on the true story of Ganga Jagjivandas Kathiawadi, popularly known as Gangubai Kothewali, whose life was documented in the book ‘Mafia Queens of Mumbai’ written by S. Hussain Zaidi. The film was released in theatres on February 25, 2022. It premiered at the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival before its theatrical release. It has earned ₹209.77 crosses globally.

‘Shabaash Mithu’

Directed by Srijit Mukherji, the biographical sports drama starred Taapsee Pannu in the lead role. The film is about the life of the former Test and ODI captain of the India women's national cricket team, Mithali Raj. It depicted the struggle of her life. Released on July 15, 2022, the film didn’t attract the audience to theatres and tanked at the box office.

‘Samrat Prithviraj’

The historical action-drama starred Akshay Kumar and Manushi Chhillar in the lead role. The film is about the life of Prithviraj Chauhan, a Rajput king from the Chahamana dynasty. Directed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi, the film also stars Sanjay Dutt, Sonu Sood, Manav Vij, Ashutosh Rana, and Sakshi Tanwar among others. Released on June 3, 2022, the film failed to pull the audience to the theatres and was declared a flop.

‘The Kashmir Files’

Directed by Vivek Agnihotri, the film is based on the exodus of Kashmiri Hindus from the Valley during the 1990s. It starred Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, Darshan Kumar, and Pallavi Joshi among others. The film received immense love from the audience as well as the critics. It was released on March 11, 2022 and was declared a commercial hit. It earned around ₹340.92 crores worldwide.

‘Jogi’

Diljit Dosanjh’s ‘Jogi’ is based on the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. The Ali Abbas Zafar directorial also starred Kumud Mishra, and Mohammed Zeeshan among others. The film was released on Netflix on September 16, 2022. The film has opened to mixed reviews from the audience as well as critics.
