Gangubai Kathiawadi’ is now starting its campaign for the prestigious British Academy Film (BAFTA) Awards 2023. 

‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ to campaign for BAFTA Awards in all categories

‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’, starring Alia Bhatt, is being submitted for the prestigious British Academy Film (BAFTA) Awards 2023 in all categories, as per a release from the film’s team. The Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial is now starting its campaign for the awards season. The 76th BAFTA Awards is scheduled to be held at the Royal Festival Hall in London in February 2023.


According to Hindustan Times, a statement from the film’s team says that as part of the campaign, ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ will be submitted for BAFTA members’ consideration in all categories including Best Film, Director, Adapted Screenplay, and Leading Actress.


Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali will now reportedly visit London and partake in several events to support the campaign. He is expected to speak about his craft at a BAFTA Masterclass on November 28.


In 2003, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film ‘Devdas’ had been nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film category.


As per the Hindustan Times report, the director talked about the film’s campaign and said they are immensely blessed to have received so much appreciation for their film globally. Alia Bhatt added that it’s a great honour to take ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ to the world stage.


Gangubai Kathiawadi’ is a semi-fictionalized story based on the life of a real-life sex worker-turned-social activist from Mumbai. The film earned over ₹200 crore worldwide and Alia’s performance was praised by the audience as well as the critics.
