Hansal Mehta's film 'Faraaz's online streaming banned in Bangladesh

Hansal Mehta’s directorial ‘Faraaz’ has been banned by the Bangladesh High Court for the promotion and online streaming of the film in the country. As per reports, as of now, there is no ban on the theatrical release of the film because their censor board has not yet taken any decision on its certification.

The film, which was released on February 3 this year, is based on the 2016 Dhaka attack wherein 22 people, mostly foreigners were killed and seven terrorists were sentenced to death.

According to the High Court order, Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (BTRC) is directed to ban the streaming of ‘Faraaz’ on online platforms in the country.

According to an AIR report, the bench of justice Md Khasruzzaman and justice Md Iqbal Kabir passed the order in Bangladesh High Court on Monday, in response to a writ petition filed by the mother of Abinta Kabir, Ruba Ahmed. Abinta was one of the many who were killed in the terror attack in 2016.

Just after the ‘Faraaz’ trailer was released, Ruba reportedly went to court and requested them to stop the release of the film in Bangladesh. The AIR report added that Ruba claimed that the film depicts Abinta's character ‘in a derogatory manner’. The report further added that the law enforcement agencies of Bangladesh are also shown in a poor light and that can damage the reputation of the country.

‘Faraaz’ stars Zahan Kapoor as victim Faraaz Hossain. Zahan is the grandson of late actor Shashi Kapoor. It also features Paresh Rawal's son Aditya Rawal as terrorist Nibras.
