‘Maharaj’ update: YRF and Netflix challenge stay order on Aamir Khan’s son Junaid’s debut film

Aamir Khan’s son, Junaid Khan, was all set to make his acting debut with ‘Maharaj’. However, the film faced a legal hurdle and was its release was stayed by Gujarat High Court. Yash Raj Films and Netflix have now challenged the High Court order.

YRF and Netflix challenge stay order

A Pinkvilla report quoting sources suggested that the production house behind the film, Yash Raj Films and the streaming platform Netflix have challenged the stay order on the film. "YRF and Netflix are challenging the stay order. The matter is in court,” told a source to Pinkvilla. ‘Maharaj’ writer has reportedly also backed the film saying that it does not vilify the Vaishnav community or the religion.

Earlier, hindu organisations had raised objections alleging that the film hurts religious sentiments. Besides Junaid, the film also stars Jaideep Ahlawat in the lead role.

YRF Entertainment's ‘Maharaj’ did not premiere on Netflix on Friday as scheduled after the Gujarat High Court stayed its release following a petition by members of a Hindu sect who claimed the film would hurt their religious sentiments.

‘Boycott Netflix’ and ‘Ban Maharaj Film’ was trending on X on Thursday as some social media users called for film’s boycott.

About ‘Maharaj’

According to the makers, ‘Maharaj’ is set in pre-independent India and is based on the Maharaj Libel Case of 1862, which was ignited by ‘allegations of misconduct by a prominent figure’. Directed by Siddharth P Malhotra and produced by Aditya Chopra under YRF Entertainment, the movie also stars Shalini Pandey with Sharvari in a special appearance. The film is part of the multi-year creative partnership between Netflix and Yash Raj Films' digital arm YRF Entertainment.
