Elon Musk took charge of Twitter after finalising a $44billion deal to acquire the social media network in October. Following this, several Hollywood celebrities quit the site and decided to switch to a different platform. Model Gigi Hadid announced on Instagram that she has deactivated her account and called the social media site a ‘cesspool of hate & bigotry.’

This move comes after mass layoffs in Twitter, including the human rights team.

Sharing a screengrab of Human Rights Counsel Shannon Raj Singh’s tweet about being laid off from the tech giant, Gigi wrote, ‘For a long time, but especially with its new leadership, it’s becoming more and more of a cesspool of hate & bigotry, and its [sic] not a place I want to be a part [sic] of.’

She apologised to her fans on the platform and said that she loves connecting with them, but she can’t say it’s a safe place for anyone nor a social platform that will do more good than harm.

Twitter has fired roughly half of the workforce with an email to staff explaining the cuts were ‘necessary to ensure the company’s success moving forward.’

Before Gigi Hadid, several other celebrities bid adieu to Twitter including singer Toni Braxton, and ‘Bridgerton’ producer Shonda Rhimes.
