In a major push to prevent train accidents, India's Rail Minister unveiled and demonstrated the features of the Kavach system - an automatic train protection technology, as per the government.

In videos posted on his Twitter account, Ashwini Vaishnaw was seen in the engine car of a train, as officials demonstrated the various features of the indigenously developed Kavach tech, which means 'shield' in Hindi.

One of the most significant characteristics of the technology is prevention of head-on and rear-end collision by automatically stoppage of the train if there is another locomotive on the same track. Kavach also prevents a train from crossing a signal if the light is red. The other features include restricting the speed of the train to 30 km/h while crossing or entering loop-lines, and automatic initiation of train whistle when approaching gates. The intervention of the train driver is not required in these actions.

Vaishnaw called Kavach an example of 'Atmanirbhar Bharat', a campaign of the Narendra Modi adminstration to make India self-reliant in various fields and industries.
