Key flashpoints in the 2020-21 farmers' agitation

India witnessed unprecedented protests by farmers objecting to three farm laws brought by the government.

Over 700 farmers are said to have died in the agitation which lasted a year and four months, from August 2020 to December 2021.

The protesters braved the winter cold and summer heat as they camped at Delhi borders, mainly Tikri, Singhu and Ghazipur borders.

The protests were led by Samyukt Kisan Morcha, an umbrella organisation of about 200 farmers' bodies.

The protest was met with a strong resistance from the police, who used tear gas, water cannons and other measures to quell it. The farmers stayed in makeshift tents. Langars were held. Thus, the agitation sustained.

On Republic day of 2021, thousands of protestors held a tractor parade and entered the national capital. Clashes with police, vandalism of properties were reported.

At Red Fort, the protesters hoisted the Nishan Sahib flag.

The protests continued for many more months. On November 19, 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the repeal of the farm laws.
