Perfume bomb: new terror tactic in J&K, as cops seize deceptive explosive device for the first time

Marking a fresh escalation of terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir, a bomb disguised as a perfume has been recovered by the Union Territory's police.

The improvised explosive device, or IED, was seized from a government school teacher who allegedly moonlighted as a Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist. Jammu and Kashmir's police chief said that Reasi resident Arif was arrested following a probe into the recent twin blasts in Narwal.

DGP Dilbag Singh said, "We found another IED in his possession. It is a perfume IED. The bottle appears to be of a perfume, but if you press it to spray, the IED explodes. The person holding the IED will suffer damage."

"This kind of IED has not been recovered earlier. We didn't disturb it much since we are not well-versed with it. A specialist team will handle it," he added.

Arif was allegedly working at the behest of his Pakistani handlers and admitted to his involvement in bombing the bus carrying Vaishno Devi pilgrims that killed four people and injured 24 last May, Singh said. He also accepted his role in an IED explosion in Jammu's Shastri Nagar area in February 2022 besides the twin explosions at Narwal on January 21 that left nine people injured.
